I was wondering what this does, anyone know?

I'm pretty sure that its when your hard drive checks for all documents, media, etc. so when you search for it on your computer all the information is there immediatly.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe indexing creates a database containing information on all of the files located on the hard drive. This allows you to search for conent using the Finder's built-in Find. It also increases the speed of searching for file names, creation dates, size, etc.
