I currently own a Mac Pro with 3TB of space and a 15in Unibody MBP. I have a buyer who's willing to buy my mbp for $1000 OR 13in MBP + cash. Should I get the base 11in MBA since I love the the form factor and I already have a workhorse at home or take the trade? I do photography and some music editing and love watching TV shows I have.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks in advance... :)

I just got the 11 Air this weekend and I really love it. In terms trading in your MBP, Im not sure if you want to do that if youre photographer. As you probably know, the air wont handle heavy duty photography jobs like the MBA does/ But if youre attracted to the light portability of the Air, then yes most definitely get the 11, or the 13 if you dont mind spending the extra money.

I got the 11 because I knew I would only be using the Air for like a few hours per day, because I do most of my work on Mac Pro. I wanted the Air so when I get out of the house and work and for when I travel on occasion. But Im certainly don't expect it to help me complete large production jobs. Its great for writing, small GarageBand productions, and short run photo editing.

If Apple had priced this entry level Air at $799, it would have made a killing over the holiday season. None-the-less, Im so jazzed about the cool design of the Air. When I look at other notebooks I just shake my head. Most are down right ugly. The MacBook Air just inspires me.

What model 15" unibody do you have? 1000 could be a bit low. Also 1000 won't cover anything but the lowest MBA model. You want 4GB if you think you'd ever do any work on it.

Edit: I just saw the specs on your sig. I think 1000 still might be a low price depending on the condition of the computer. Ask for at least what will cover a 11" with 4GB RAM.

Thank you all for your replies. The thing bout my MBP is that it has a crack on the glass so its kinda down in value. But thank you.

I have a MP so I have no issues for using that as my main production machine. I want something which is long term. MBA is beautiful and definitely portable so I'm debating if I should get the 11 or 13. I feel that the 13 KINDA defeats the purpose since the 11 in soooo beautiful.

well as much as i'd like it for that much i think it kinda devalues the MBA to below even a base MacBook. I believe the MBA deserves to stay in its premium status. Not like how Dell reduced the Alienware M11x R1 to a budget gaming pc with its black friday $599 deal

Hold on, you're saying you don't want Apple's prices to come down? You'd rather the MBA were a premium product... why?

I honestly do not understand.

because it'd be even more similar to a normal ASUS EEE PC netbook or a HP Mini then. It wouldnt make people go "wow" as much.

If the road were flooded with cheap lamborghinis would they have the same feeling as now? even if assuming its a great car, the concept of an "affordable" or less than ridiculously priced lamborghini would devalue the brand too much. less prestigious

So you see Apple products as status symbols?

I suppose you think the class system is a good idea too.

nope

i merely see them as premium items that should cater to a crowd willing to pay

When I read that Apple made something 300 billion in profit, hell yeah I want to cheaper. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work Apple puts into their products, but it's no secret that they can put a high price on their goods because many people are willing to pay.

Apple prices are high for what you get, but the computers are WELL made. They dont make 25-30 models of laptop like some companies just slapping plastic and parts together and shipping them out. Apple does a few products and does them right, thats probably why we pay a premium, for the quality and the support. Apple care is usually rated well above any other company.

Neither do I honestly. If I had the option of pocketing $200 I'd do it in a heartbeat versus giving it to Steve Jobs for the simple fact that I have a machine that has an illuminated apple symbol on my lid.

Short answer: Yes, you should get it.

I work all day on a Loaded MacPro with lots of RAM and storage (4 HDs), and the 11" MBA is the perfect companion.

The thing you'll find is that because of the SSD is seems faster for uses.

I'm so impressed with the performance of the MBA I'm thinking about swapping out my 500GB HD on my MacPro for an SSD to load just the system and apps.
