Anyone use electric scooters to commute to work? I am thinking about it. I have 4 miles to go to work, and I would rather not be as sweaty as from riding a bike.

as for why - i'm tired of my car acting up getting there, and it is rough for a car's only responsibility to be 8 miles a day in traffic. i would rather be a 1 car family and save $2k on gas, insurance, etc.

Anyone heard of any good ones?

Ive never used an electric scooter so I cant really respond intelligentlly
however
giant makes some really good bikes and they do make an electric assist bicycle which is fairly affordable

I agree with you, also prefer not to travel by car. Such a waste of money. Of course my option here in Boston is to walk and rise the MBTA.

If I had the money in you situation, that is no public transportation. This would be my choice.

Wow what a huge slap in the face to Vespa fans like myself.

A 'gas scooter?' are you kidding?

Like saying a Harley is a gas powered unicycle.

I would suggest a Vespa anyway, nice ride, pretty good mileage, and it has a much longer range then 4 Mi.

well... do you mean a scooter? like a device that you need to stand to ride? or a moped?

i'd reccomend an old motorcycle- an old honda or yamaha. early 80's. you can find 'em for about a grand. easy to maintain, fun in the summer.

Vespas are crazy expensive, but they are in a class by themselves (in price AND nostalgic quality).

Yamaha Vinos and Honda Metropolitans are nice choices for a lot less...

And Pep boys sells crappy knock-offs for under a grand...

I think you need a motorcycle license for anything over 50ccs.

Sounds like your commute distance may push the electric scooter's limits?

How about one of those Segway things? :p

Ha, a friend of mine needed to replace his daily transportation, a beat to DEATH mercury cougar. He was looking at scooters and old 80's japanese bikes. So what did he end up getting? a used Harley, of course.

I'm not into motorcycles so much, but after fooling around on his dirt bike a bit he let me ride the Harley - what a rush! It almost beats that time we went mountainbiking down a ski slope at Alpine Valley (48mph downhill on a cheap hardtail Trek is nuts).

Those vespa's are nice, but not at all cheap if you buy new or nearly new.
