Print Screen on Mac?

BTW: when you get a screen shot, it saves to the desktop as a PDF file and not to the clipboard.

To save a PDF in some other format, just double click on the PDF file, which should open it up in Preview (assuming your Mac is configured with the default settings in this regard). After you've got it opened up in preview, go to File -> Export and you can save it as any one of a number of standard image formats.
Preview will also let you crop the image before you export it. Just drag a box around the part you want, then go to Tools -> Crop (or press command-K).
If you use Grab (it's in Applications/Utilities), you can save the screenshot in whatever format you like. Grab is just a little more full-featured (lets you do timed screen captures for one thing) than the built-in screen capture functions, and comes in handy sometimes.
