This one goes out to conspiracy theorists everywhere.
A co-worker and I were discussing politics the other week at lunch and we started to wonder if the political machines on both parties are working in a completely unintended way when it comes to primaries.
We have witnessed in the last 2 elections that a decisive win in one of the primaries can propel a candidate to the nomination (Bush in NH in '00, and Kerry in OH in 04). This candidate is not always necessarily the best candidate that is running. Here's the hypothesis. Is it possible that a number of people are registering for the opposition's party in order to try to push the "weaker" candidates to nomination to make the November win easier?
For example is it possible that a number of Dems registered as Republicans for the NH primary to push Bush for nomination since they saw McCain as a tougher opponent? (flip parties and make it Ohio for Kerry). If this were happening I fear that our country is in for years of very large problems as the better candidates are left by the wayside due to the slight push from the opposition and hopes of an easier campaign.
Only a theory, but it would explain a lot.
