I have just done a major htpc upgrade to my house...

I've brought a new mac mini coupled with a drobo which is sat in my living room and i use plex to watch my media... i have lots of 720p and 1080p files... mainly in MKV which play brilliantly on my tv...

My question is...

Can i buy a first gen apple tv for my bedroom upstairs, mod it with the broadcom HD chip ive read about, taking out the wireless card for it, jailbreak it and install plex (although think broadcom only works with xmbc) and then link it to my mac mini downstairs via a ethernet plug in wall socket bridge e.g.

And get it to read all my media files off my drobo???

Is this possible? If not can you suggest any ideas how to solve this problem?

Thank you in advance

No, the Apple TV 1 uses Tiger, Plex requires Leopard/Snow Leopard.

I don't know about the 1080P files (as I rip my stuff at 720p to save space) but XBMC plays my files fine on my ATV1. You just need to setup the path to the shared Drobo, so it knows where to look.

Why not get an ATV 2, hack it and run XMBC on it?

Yeah see storage isnt really an issue for me, so you can mod the ATV 1 to read from a drobo? But not too sure on 1080p file playback? Have you modded with the broadcom chip?

Can the ATV 2 play 1080p files???

Sort of. It'll play a 1080p file but it'll still only output it as 720p as far as I know.

The First gen apple tv will run XBMC, i actually bought the ATVFlash software for it which works so nicely. But If you do a bit of googling around you will be able to get XMBC on the first Gen unit.

The first gen does not go 1080p, unless someone else knows otherwise when i tried to play on on my first gen there was not chance it skipped and froze.

No Idea about the second Gen, cause it runs IoS it is a different ball game for modding. again google will help
