I have a PowerMac G4 MDD with these specs
-Dual 867MHz
-2GB RAM
-3 x IDE HDD
etc.

I have set up file sharing and networking with other PC's and Mac's in my home network. So I will use this as a file server.

I would like to upgrade to SATA, and would like to know if the following will be compatible with my PowerMac :)

SATA Card
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SATA-PCI-int-ports-VT6421a/dp/B000LS4LXS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Power Adapter
http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-LP4-SATA-Internal-Power-Splitter-Cable/dp/B0002GRUV4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Hard Drive (may buy 2 of these)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Caviar-3-5-inch-Internal/dp/B003SLE8H4/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1296321261&sr=1-4

Please let me know if these items will all work and be recognized by my PowerMac. Also, if I only purchase 1 hard drive, can I add another for a RAID 1 setup in the future ? (mirroring) via software. Or do I have to buy 2 from the start to create a RAID 1 setup ?

That is an American sales specialist, and there is no way I am paying those prices. I would prefer to know if I can use the ones mentioned.

I never tried the ones you have posted. So there is no better but for you to buy and try...

Yeah I know that, I am hoping for a response from another member who has a similar item. It seems pretty popular and generic on amazon.

Listed SATA CRAD won't work. There's no Mac OS drivers for VIA VT6421a chipset.

I went through this a year or so back and couldn't find anything out there that would do it other than the Sonnet; I bought it through macupgrades.co.uk. I remember being pretty frustrated at the time that there wasn't anything cheaper to be had.

http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/machine.php?name=powermac-g4-quicksilver lists most of the popular upgrades for your machine.

The cable & drive in your original post are fine; I have a couple of the WD Greens and they're a good, reliable drive. The Black is notionally faster but I use the Green for Apple TV file serving and have never had an issue.

The sonnet seems to be the only option. Surely there has to be a cheaper variety though, considering the PC ones are a fraction if the cost!

Maybe this one.

I have no idea if its availible in the UK.

AFAIK/can find, the macupgrades one is the only one avaliable in the UK (I nearly bought one for my MDD last night, but decided against it as I dont need the extra space in my iTunes box).

This one is from HK, but it's extremely cheap: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PCI-Sil-3512-2-SATA-Hard-Drive-DVD-RAID-controller-Card-/270600713620?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f010f3594

It can be flashed with Mac firmware (on a Mac) and become bootable under OS X. Known to have troubles with some DA and QS but it works fine with MDDs.

I personally wouldn't get anything with VIA chips for a Mac. Never had any luck with any PCI card with a VIA chip in it for Mac :(.

There's a company called FirmTek that sells similar cards. I know they used to sell them in UK years ago, but I don't know if they still do, and I don't know what the price would be, but you might be able to find one on ebay.

This is an example on OWCs website. I have a similar one on my old G4 (with a WD raptor as my boot drive), but mine also includes an eSATA on the back plate. I can tell you I didn't pay that price 4-5 years ago, if anything it seems that prices have gone up.
