Is MobileMe a good, SECURE online backup/storage service?

Hi, I need a online backup service for some of my important files. I see that for the price of 100/year, Apple only offers 20GB of storage, which is more expensive compared to the competition, but I would be willing to pay that much if its that good.

The one thing is that I will be mainly using this in college, and I don't have a Mac (I have iMac, but not taking that with me) yet (I might buy a Macbook or keep a thinkpad), so is MobileMe still good if I don't have a mac?

I've used Dropbox, Sugarsync, and Windows Live Mesh, any users here used those services before and can compare MobileMe to them??

If you're looking just at storage, Dropbox gives you 100 GB for $100 a year. But, you could get a yearly MobileMe subscription for much less than a $100 off Amazon and it comes with other benefits.

It seems to be that Dropbox realtime sync is quite reliable. I've had my MobileMe disk disconnect and freak out on me before.

You could also give Windows Live Mesh a try. It's 5 GB free and works on Mac. I think it'll depend on your experience, the application is polished but I'm not sure how much resources it uses up day to day.

@e5volcano, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear but - I've had iDisk disconnect before, but it's never lost any data.

I can't say the same for MobileMe mail though (:

If you're looking for online storage as 'backup' then dropbox is your man,

They offer 30 days of 'Undo' and I think on the premium plans it's unlimited.

Handy if you delete a file you didn't mean to.

iDisk is unreliable at best in my experience. Sometimes things just don't sync and I have even lost a few important folders.

iDisk is unreliable, it corrupted my data the last time I used it. If you live in the cloud, use Dropbox, it's a lot more reliable.

I have never had any reliability issues with iDisk. One advantage is that you can stream media files to your iToy with it (I'm not sure if this is possible with DropBox or not). DropBox works great and it's faster than iDisk. As for reliability, I don't have enough experience with either one of them to tell any difference.

I've used iDisk and Dropbox. Dropbox is much better. iDisk is slow and unreliable. You can also sync your Dropbox account to any computer (PC and Mac) and iPhone.

Also, What do you all think of using mobileme to sync btw MBP and Iphone 4 (verizon) vs using Itunes to do direct sync. Will mobileme be reliable for this?

MobileMe will sync your calendars, contacts, notes, and bookmarks just fine. However, it is adviseable to start from one Mac at a time, and go slowly. Sometimes "merging" will create duplicate entries so once you start using MobileMe, turn off syncing for your calendars, contacts, etc., in iTunes when you dock your iDevices.

Personally, I don't use MobileMe for anything anymore and went back to my old Yahoo account for Mail, Contacts, and Calendar. I really don't miss it and I dock my iDevices at least two or three times a week as it is. For my needs, Yahoo syncs Calendar and Notes OTA w/ my iDevices which is plenty for me.

I know some use Gmail and find their use of Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) handy for Mail, and Contact/Calendar syncing as well. I have several Gmail accounts but like Yahoo better, just personal preference is all. :)

Definitely... for Backup and storage I think it's second to none... Limited space in a free account though...
