So I recently bought a 500GB hard drive to upgrade my MBP...I'll be getting it soon. I have done previous restores from Time Machine and never encountered any issues. I have however always excluded the VM file from the backups due to the way Time Machine handles it. My question is...would simply copying the VM file to a thumb drive then transferring it to the new hard drive do the trick, or would it be wiser to allow Time Machine to back up the VM file the very last time I do a back up so it only does it once and then when I do the restore from backup it will be there?

Either way should be fine. Your VM is just a file. As long as it's not running when you copy/back it up everything should be fine.
