Saudis 'reform militants' on web

The Saudi government has told an anti-terrorism conference in Riyadh that it has reformed Islamist militant sympathisers through the internet. It says an initiative to "create awareness of the dangers of terrorism" has persuaded 250 militant sympathisers to renounce their views. The government has also opened a hotline for people concerned that their relatives are influenced by extremism. It has been under pressure to tackle extremist ideologies in the kingdom.

The Islamic Affairs minister, Saleh al-Sheik, said the ministry had carried out the campaign through Islamic and cultural websites. "We had a dialogue with 800 [people] and more than a quarter were convinced. The rest are still continuing contact," he said, the Reuters news agency reports.

The initiative also includes the offer of direct counselling, Mr al-Sheik said. He did not say how his office verified the identities of those that had communicated with his ministry. Saudi Arabia has clamped down on militant networks since a triple suicide bombing in the capital in May 2003, in which 35 people died. However, it has been criticised for not doing enough to tackle extremist ideologies that are widespread in the conservative kingdom, says the BBC's Kim Ghattas in Riyadh.

The government is using the conference to show that it is committed to fight international terrorism, our correspondent says.
Counselling, that's what they need! Way to go, House of Saud!

Counselling, that's what they need! Way to go, House of Saud!

Are you being facetious? With the plentiful issues of your carefully crafted sardonic wit, I couldn't be sure...(though I tend to hedge toward genuine in this instance).

Assuming you are playing it straight, I wonder how the US would've gone about this course of action w/o any credibility with potential Islamic militants. Our support of Isreal and various other real or perceived actions prior to Iraq may have made it difficult. After all, the Wahabi Hous of Saud enjoys tremendous Islamic credibility due to being the guardians of many of the holiest sites of Islam (which, kinda ironically, they took by force from the Hashemites).

Even via proxy, I have my doubts. Of course, considering how well the military option has worked, it sure would've been preferable. Once upon a time, before the creation of Isreal, the US was the most beloved of Western Nations in the Arab world, because we aided and educated the Arab populace (often in Arabic), and kept our prostelyzing to a minimum, as well as fostering Arab self-determination, which ran counter to British and French policy at the time.

Ah, how times change...good to hear someone is making a dent, however small. I wonder how much of the impetus behind this by the House of Saud is to forstall instability and preserve their rule?
