BBC iplayer app on ipad

Downloaded the new iplayer app today. I am English but live in Aus so I have always used a UK VPN to connect to iplayer through Safari and on the whole found it works fine most of the time. However the app seems to ignore the VPN and states not in UK.

How are they doing this and is there anyway around it?

Tried the app without using a VPN connection (I'm not in the UK) and - as expected - it didn't work. Then I connected to my UK VPN and it still didn't work.

Half an hour later I tried again and since I can use it without any problem.
