I'm interested...but u already know that.

If anything...aside from the time investment...I think it'll be a lot of fun to get in on this contest...esp. if we can get a good # of MR people to volunteer their time & talents... :D

plus...it's a couple days out of town...which I'm always down for ;)

the plan is to have fun and win :)

so far i've found a total of 6 interested MR members:

kishba
techathead (newb :))
moxiemike
eyelikeart (perhaps his gf, too?)
rower_cpu
and now dukestreet

i'm also still waiting for word from taft and there may be a local kid that wants to be involved (a big programmer)

how does that team sound? i think the coolest thing is everyone will be using a mac... we're also very well rounded

i'm still looking for interested people and especially input

i'm also hoping we can make this an official macrumors team somehow....

it does require a time commitment from dec 5-8 most likely... i'm still investigating whether i will be able to go as well... i know cleo wanted to be involved but finals are dreadfully close to that date for her

i figure if we can find interested people and start working on the registration process we can just worry about who exactly is on the team at a later date....

I'll talk to him if u like to get the ok to start it as a Team Macrumors?

OK, here's the deal with me....

This sounds like a lot of fun, and I would be excited to do it, but only if my particular skills were going to be useful. I couldn't get a good idea of what kind of webpage was going to be involved, which makes it kind of hard to tell if you guys would find me as an asset.

As I said in an e-mail to kishba, my skills center much more on the technical end of things and less (much less :p) on the graphical design side. Depending on what the website had to do, I think I could be very useful.

Kishba, could you maybe forward the e-mail I sent you to the other interested parties. If you guys have an idea of wether I'm a good fit, it would help me make up my mind. Or any links to more information on the goals of the competition and technologies/skills that would be desirable.

Hey there everybody

I'm the local guy kishba was talking about. I'm sure if I end up joining the team, I'll get to know all of you very well, but for right now I just wanted to extend a greeting to everyone and an assurance that if I decide to join the team, I won't let you down. When I decide to work on something, I'm dedicated to it. Anywho, I hope we all get to work together and make the best darn website EVER!

ok here's the list of team members (we're still hoping taft can learn some php :))

kishba - php/mysql/html/video (hopefully flash, too)
techathead - server/php/mysql
rower_cpu - php/mysql/html/css/video (hopefully flash, too)
godblessthenet - hardcore php/mysql/html

eyelikeart, dukestreet, and moxiemike are the design dudes... (and video as well) i don't know how you guys want to split up resposibilities or if you just want to share the love, i mean work... :)

Sep 9, 2002, 08:06 PM
ok one more thing....

please compose a brief bio and a set of links to any web sites you have worked *or* are working on... the rules say to include everything

if you have examples of photography online or if you can put some examples of graphics somewhere on the web, do so as well

just post the stuff here and we'll put it on the site... hopefully eyelikeart can make up a quick design in the next few days :)

also, where should we post this portfolio site? we have a few choices... kishba.com could house it or we could ask arn for a place on MR if we needed to

anyways, thanks

My name is Frank , I’m 24 years old, and am in the process of building a business for myself similar to Moxie here. I have an Associate’s in Occupational Studies in Graphic Design, as well as illustration background. I am currently working on finishing my BA in Fine Arts, with the hopes of getting a Masters at some point.

My experience consists of:
• 2 years of freelance & contract design work for myself as well as other design firms
• 2.5 years as a production artist for Action Press, Inc. in Metairie, LA
• 2 years photodeveloping experience
• 8 months as an intern for WDSU-TV6, the NBC affilliate here in New Orleans where I did news graphics and assisted in commercial production

My computer skills are as follows:
• Macintosh naturally...can troubleshoot like a mofo in OS 9 & below...X I’m a novice
• While I can do work on a peecee, I'd rather pick my own butt if it's an option  ;)
• I run & maintain the systems & network at my job
• Software: Photoshop, Freehand, Quark, Illustrator, etc, etc.. (print production stuff mostly)

I am in the process of putting my own company, Eye Creative, together as a graphic design/photography house. I am currently working with Mancini, above, on www.thefotohaus.com as a founder/contributing photographer. I have dabbled around in Dreamweaver & Flash very minimally, but am also currently learning how to use it better since I am working on getting my own website up (www.eye-creative.com).

I tend to keep my plate full, as I feel it’s better to get yourself involved in a dozen projects with the possibility of at least one hitting big...hence I want to do something important & noteworthy in my life. I drink a lot of coffee, eat often, exercise regularly, and sleep very little.

maybe we should exchange resumés? ;)

Just in case I decide to do this and am accepted by the group :).

My name is Matthew Trumbell and I am a quantitative programmer working in the financial industry. Though I've done a large amount of web design work, much of that work is proprietary and I am unable to show it.

My experience related to web development (from most recent to least)...

Risk analysis of foreign financial products. With this project I created a web page through which users could access risk information on their position. The risk calculations in this project were developed using Mathematica and the results were presented on a web page generated by a library that converts Mathematica objects into HTML code. The project used WebMathematica for presenting the user with the web page interface. I was the primary developer on this project. This work is proprietary and I am unable to display the work.

A robust database link for Mathematica. A HTML conversion library for Mathematica (converts Mathematica objects to HTML). With these two packages, our firm is able to easily create web pages displaying and formatting database information. This currently has a wide variety of uses in the firm including display of quantitative research project results, to financial instrument price management in the database. I was the sole developer on these projects.

Account and position management systems. I worked on several small projects using Java Servlets and SQL that facilitated web page management of position, asset and account information. These projects are also proprietary.

Complete equity risk system. I designed and was the lead developer on a hedge fund's primary equity risk system. The project utilized a variety of technologies including Java for risk calculations, SQL for data storage, Mathematica for statistical support and data analysis, HTML for web page delivery of the dynamic risk reports, Coldfusion for database integration into HTML, and Javascript for webpage navigation and dynamic display capabilities. The system allowed for intra-day risk runs and had a dynamic display engine that allowed for traversing and aggregating of the report data at run time, allowing the user complete control of the data displayed. This system was also proprietary.

Java web tutorial for beginning Java developers. I worked in a learning center at Michigan Technological University and also taught a Summer Youth program in Java. This webpage was designed to aid new Java users in the Java language. The information contained in these pages is now quite out of date (as Java has progressed much since I wrote it), but the design still holds up. I don't currently have the tutorial online as it was hosted from my university account, but I can upload it if you want to see it.

My main work consists of the BPA site (check techathead's bio) and http://www.smallcityusa.com , an online comic drawn by a friend of mine. we will be hosting the site here on macrumors.

the requirements for the site are very brief. we basically just need bios & examples (links) to our work. we also need a video of one of us presenting... we can discuss that later though :)

Wasn't that the point of us posting our bios and links to our work?

So now eyelikeart can start creating the page...;) :p

so who's going to see this, is it for everyone or just the people form the contest?

The judges have to see the site for us to be legitimate for choosing. I don't think the site has to be up by Oct 11 but I'm not sure. If we want to make it all user accessible, I'm sure we could.

But of course, I'm the newbie here and I'm just hypothesizing :)

so I'm thinking that we should have a meeting soon aside from this to discuss what we're doing LIVE...

any takers?

what's a good time? Weekends or late night (EST) on the week days for me.

I'm like the duke...late nights are usually better than anything else...

weekends tend to be hard unless it's Sunday evening...

during the day...uh.....cannot do...don't want the boss to know I'm playing around on their time... ;)

Late nights are great for me. I'm usually in and out online on the weekends and during the day, unless you wanna play email tag with me all day Tuesdays and Thursdays while I'm at work (yay! mailness!)

I'm on PST, so keep that in mind...I'm not available Monday or Wednesday nights...

Thursday and Friday are good, so are weekends...

Ok I think at least the few of us who have given times, including Kishba (since it's his baby) need to get together to get some things straight. I know Moxie wants to be in on everything, however he is super busy right now.

I should say that while I'm flattered at the prospect of being put up to the task of actually designing the page, I can tell u guys right now that I was hoping to collaborate with someone or some people to do it...as I don't exactly what we're doing with it...?

So let's start putting together the ideas & get a structure of exactly what we're gonna do?

Start a new thread for the webpage portfolio design - any one who wants to help can go there.

I know im a little late coming into this, but I would like to help out also.

Eye tells me that you guys need a Flash person, I might be able to help fill that spot. My site will be up shortly (within the week probably) and I will post again when i have it ready :)

The site has my resume and everything on it.... so anyway, let me know if you are interested.
