A classic.

Good logo design is one of the hardest design projects to tackle.
Although strictly speaking, the FedEx 'logo' is really a logotype...

The definition is if it's got type, then it's a logotype and other considerations come into play i.e. legibility, fonts, etc

The Apple logo is a pure logo, a symbol. Much like the Shell (http://www.kartstars.com.au/images/Shell%20logo%20jpg.jpg) logo...

[graphic omitted]

Look out! Geek alert!

In fact, the Olympic logo wouldn't quite be a properly drawn venn diagram with 5 classes, since the intersection of each class should be indicated on the venn diagram (there is no way, for example, to indicate that something falls in both the blue and red classes). One way to draw the five class venn diagram looks like the graphic found near the bottom of this (http://www.combinatorics.org/Surveys/ds5/VennGraphEJC.html) page.

All of the circles don't have to intersect in a Venn diagram. The Olympic rings describe a universe in which nothing belongs to both Set Blue and Set Red, among other things...there's nothing wrong with that.

Actually they do, but perhaps we're getting a little off topic here. Again, here's a reference for the mathematically brave on the definition of a venn diagram. It was an interesting question at one point whether venn diagrams could be constructed for any number of classes. This would be pretty simple if they didn't have to intersect properly.

Okay, maybe I should just start another thread, but I'm not going to. Let's just open this up to finding hidden things in logos. The first example that comes to mind for me is my high school's logo that had its initials hidden in it, but that really won't mean much to anyone but me. Instead I'll open it up with Volkswagen. I know it isn't too mind-blowing, but a lot of people miss the fact that it's a V and a W...

I suppose you are correct. Strictly speaking, Venn's definition of his diagrams does include the stipulation that all possible intersections be included. Venn diagrams are really just a subset of Euler diagrams, which don't have the requirement that all zones be represented and preceded Venn by a century (not to mention even older examples of such diagrams which went largely unpublished). But over the years, the distinction between Venn and Euler diagrams has generally been lost, to the point where many people are taught that Venn diagrams can include mutually exclusive sets...I certainly was in my youth. Euler diagrams are more flexible for describing various real-world situations, as mutual exclusivity is certainly possible, but Euler was famous for lots of other things, so we call them Venn diagrams and give John Venn a little bit of fame.

I've never see a logo as clever as the one that our electric utility company, Southern California Edison, used to use. But they don't use it anymore! :(

I couldn't find a copy of it online, so I did my best to reconstruct something like it from memory. It's their initials, but it looks like a power cord!

For those of you who don't know, the Big Ten Conference added an 11th school to the conference. But, they didn't want to change the name of the conference. But, look closely at the logo.
