Hi guys

Dad dropped the Mac :( And now it ticks like crazy when you insert a disk, and only reads the odd one.

Im looking for a replacement, and have done a bit of research myself but just wanted to check with the experts before ordering anything.

Specs are:

2.1 Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB RAM
120GB 5400rpm HDD
13.3-inch
White
Slot loading combo drive

Now, for new drives im looking at:

Apple MacBook / Pro SuperDrive GWA-4080MB DVD-RW Slim
Panasonic (Matsushita) CW-8221 super-slim combo drive

The "Matsushita" is the existing one, but is the other one a better one?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help :D
Jamie

P.S. Can't wait for the Pro refresh, 15" here I come...

I have the same Macbook as well and I can't wait for the Pro 15" refresh as well, I'll be there day 1 for it.
As for the drive that ticks, I had this same issue and luckily it was during my AppleCare so they repaired for free. If you still have your warranty they will replace it. If not I'd suggest getting a superdrive that the Air's use and taking it back within 30days since the new MBP's will be out within that time. If you're looking for a permanent replacement than the Apple MacBook / Pro one you listed is better.

The MacBook Air Superdrive only works with the Air. It can be modified to work with any USB computer but involves taking it apart.....

If you are planning on keeping the MacBook then buy the Superdrive

If you plan on selling soon then buy the Combi drive

The difference in price is probably only around $20 or so

I bought a used MacBook off eBay a few weeks ago and when I got it the optical drive wouldn't eject disks. Wanting to be able to put media on my MacBook if I needed to, I decided to look on eBay for replacement drives. I found a used Combo drive for $35 from a seller on eBay (electronicmac) and I installed the drive myself. If you have upgraded or been inside a MacBook before it's a easy install, and there are a few online guides that make it easy to do.

combi = combo

the one that is in at the moment will read but not burn dvds = combo

The Superdrive (GWA-4080MB DVD-RW Slim) will burn dvds

If you are keeping it then go for the SuperDrive - lots on eBay
