New MacRumors Moderators

[Doctor Q]

Effective immediately, we have four new MacRumors moderators:bousozoku, who joined MacRumors in June 2002 and lives in Florida

edesignuk, who joined MacRumors in March 2002 and lives in Essex, U.K.

Nermal, who joined MacRumors in December 2002 and lives in Whakatane, New Zealand

WinterMute, who joined MacRumors in January 2003 and lives in London, U.K.
They have accepted this new responsibility in order to help make MacRumors the best site it can be.

bousozoku, Nermal, and WinterMute are now Moderators. Doctor Q has moved from Forum Moderator to Moderator, and edesignuk has moved into a new position known as a "mini-mod", to deal with misdirected or problemsome threads and posts in the forums.

All four new moderators have proven to be excellent forum members, providing help to other members, sharing their experience, and being of service to the MacRumors community. In addition, we are pleased that their addition expands our time zone range.

With MR becoming ever more popular it has become harder to effectively moderate these boards, especially with the international flavour we've got going on here! I'm sure the new Mods will do a great job and will keep the MR community spirit going. Congrats again guys :)

This is so true. Of all forums I've joined, MacRumors is the best. There is a friendliness to it and a feeling of family and friends. My friends always ask me how on Earth could I love a forum so much.

Honestly I would have been flattered if asked. But like LBJ, if nominated I would not run, if elected I would not serve (at least at this point). For as evident by my posts over the past few days, my new job and new outlook as to what I find important has changed. In the end I think that active members like myself also serve a purpose, as much as those that are in a mod status.

I am glad that we have a couple EU members as mods in some degree.

I meant I had been on better behavior recently (actually reporting stuff rather than dropping in a macro and running), and that that could be looked upon as "kissing up" to current admins. I didn't mean for people to kiss up to me :)

Not trying to speak for sun baked, but compared to the other additions to the mod list, you are one that stands out the most. Maybe both in a positive and negative way (though there are many other members here that fit in the negative category). To be honest I don't remember seeing the other new UK mod and their postings.

Even as a mini mod, you have to have a thick skin. And as a mod you have to lead by example.

To be honest there may be those out there that are gunning for you. Waiting for you to "slip up". In the end the powers that be at MR have chosen you to be part of the select few. And that speaks volumes.

And I for one welcome you to that new group. Though I may not always have agreed with your "macros", your heart was in the right place. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the added responsibilities. This coming from one that has done mod work in the past.

Well, Sun Baked's tars have been a bit more controversial in the past (I loved them and miss them, but the SS gang is pretty funny).

My sincere congrats to all of the new Mods

I for one have enjoyed and profited from all of your posts in the past, and look forward to your greater involvement in the Forum. I think each of you will grow in your influence and impact on the site. Each of you has your own strengths in what you offer to the site. My observations are that E is often first on the scene and the quickest to respond, which should help to keep the board clear of unwanted junk. Nermal is always very informative and helpful. I have learned a lot from his posts. bousozoku is very conscientious about the board and its posters. He looks out for all of us and helps to make the site user friendly and a place that we can all feel welcome. WinterMute seems to offer a combination of all of the above, and will compliment the rest of the cast. Others may see things differently, but that has been my personal experience with them. The believe the mods have shown wisdom and foresight in their choices.

For those that are worried about E, I for one feel like the trust placed in him is warranted at this time. While he has a playful side that is sometimes seen as overbearing, his energy and passion for the site is clearly evident. I believe his new position will temper that somewhat, and we will see his zeal and energy directed for the good of the site. If not, I have faith that Arn, Doctor Q and Mr. Anderson will know how to handle anything that arises. But I have every confidence that their trust in E will prove to vindicate their wisdom. For any who would "bait" E now, I think the greater evil is yours.

I'm sure that there are others that were considered, and had much to offer, but for whatever reason (time on the board, "too nice" or whatever) the mods have made their selections. I hope nobody is personally disappointed in not being included. After all, the point of the board is to contribute to the community and enjoy the fellowship. I rarely get to poke my nose in here anymore, and I have to tell you, I miss it greatly.

On a side note, I for one have always enjoyed your 'tars Sun Baked, and don't really understand the criticism of them. Perhaps I've missed some along the way (and yes, I did see the 'milk' tar and thought it was clever). I also enjoy your witty responses. You can usually say in one line what it would have taken me a paragraph... and you say it better.

Anyway, congrats to all, and I hope you take good care of the board. Hopefully one day I'll get to spend more time here again.

Well, first, I need to point out that that was the single most obvious brown-nosed "welcome" I've seen yet. A true work of art. ;) Yes, I'm sending them all cookies, but you won't see me posting that here. Er... whoops!

Second, welcome back - truly - I know you've been worked to the ragged edge of oblivion, and I hope things get better soon. Please let us know if your interview (I missed the original posts about it a few weeks ago) ends up in an offer. If not, I know one of the next ones will. It's easy to get caught up in wondering about why you're working 72-hour weeks now, but it is just a short phase to help you appreciate even more the much better job which I am certain you'll have very soon.

close to one I imagine. There have been a few like that in the past who have picked the wrong time to post. One of the reasons we've added a lot of global time zone coverage with the new mods. It gives us a better chance that someone will be on line when someone tries to pull something.

edesignuk will do a good job as a Mod mini and I'm sure the rest of the crowd will go along with that. It's unfortunate that you're having trouble with his being chosen but you don't seem to have any reason for your statement.

Maybe you could delegate some authority to Demis or Contributors for doing your dirty work, then we temporary iMods could do your bidding without your hands getting dirty. To ensure that none of us became too power hungry, you could randomly rotate through a list of candidates using a technique called the the iMod Shuffle.

Actually, there is a position below Mod mini that all MacRumors members have: "MacRumors Bad Post Reporter".

One of the reasons our forums stay enjoyable for so many members is because of the members who let us know when there is a problem that needs attention, from spam to threads mistakenly posted in the wrong forum. This makes it easier for us than if they point out the problems by posting in the thread, but it means that they don't get any personal credit for spotting the problem.

I learned this the hard way, before I was a moderator. I would post about something I saw that was wrong, and a moderator would fix the problem and delete my post. It didn't take me long to figure out I was making their job more time consuming!

We all benefit from members who help the site by reporting the posts that we need to know about. Thank you, MacRumors Bad Post Reporters.

I'm hoping mymemory's post is tongue in cheek, as edesignuk has been, to date, exemplary in his duties, without losing that sense of humour we all know and expect.

The mods here have done a great job in making MacRumors the most friendly and useful forum site I know of, and I hope us n00bie mods can carry on that work.

If everyone stayed within the rules, our job would be easy, but we have rules to observe too, and that is going to make us unpopular with some individuals some of the time.

It's OK, it's part of the job as far as I'm concered, I know I'm helping a forum that has been a great place to hang out over the years, and I know the other mods, mini or otherwise, feel the same.

Something that has occoured to me, is there is a missing feature on this forum. It's a feature that I have only ever seen on GameFAQs, but have never seen anywhere else.

The marking system. Basically, each post has a button on it, that when you click it, you go to a page where you can "mark" a message, You can mark it for spamming, flaming, etc... There is a variety of options. Anyway, once you have marked it, it goes into a todo list for the mods. They can then review this message, and remove it or change it.

Basically, it allows people to easily inform the mods if there is a bad post. Currently, you have to PM the mods. This makes it easier. Oh, and if you abuse the system, you get punished.

Anouther feature from GameFAQs, is the Karma system, which ties in with the mod system. Basically, when you get moderated, you loose Karma. And you gain one Karma per day, as long as you have at least one active post.

I suppose I've only seen these features at GameFAQs, because it is the scurge of all earth. And I love it.

Well, I think the current reporting system should continue to work just fine. It's not too difficult for someone to put a direct statement into the text box describing the problem.

I think we can figure out the problem without it going into a specific category ahead of time. ;)

I remember one member in particular (I won't name which one) had a post average of over 60 per day shortly after being banned. I know this because I checked that user's profile. 60 per day is almost surely spamming when even Mr. Anderson can't manage more than 16 legitimate posts per day - I haven't found any more active member.

If you noticed the counts seemed to be based on the 5's and 500's. So by the thread you so conveniently linked too, you and I are behind the numbers mentioned.
