iPod controls when in picture frame

At work I like to have my iPad going in picture frame mode with music playing on it. When I touch the screen once I get the unlock slider and sometimes I get iPod controls while other times I just get the name of the current song. Why do I only sometimes get the iPod controls and what do I need to do to get them whenever I touch the screen when in picture frame?
