I've tried several times to download the updates and I haven't been able to (when I click on the "free" button, it changes to "install" and when I click on it it changes back to "free"). Could be because I don't have enough memory, or that my 1G iPod Touch is not compatible with the updates?

If you have multiple updates, why don't you tap Update All? From your description, you are going to a particular update and trying to update just the one. It may be that the iPod is not picking up the touch input correctly and isn't bringing up the prompt for your AppleID/password as it should.
