Yeah, works fine in DP 4.

There has been a lot of focus on what Apple fixed with the new release however, they also broke certain things. When you enter fullscreen mode (the new fullscreen mode, your window does not actually stay on the screen that it was. This is very much what iTunes used to do only now every application does it. Essentially you cannot watch a video in QT in fullscreen on one monitor while doing something else on another. Now that is some serious ***** if you ask me.
Also when you have multiple monitors attached, Mission Control does not work as well as you'd expect. You get a separate set of Mission Control(s) for each monitor connected. Yes not really a problem with most MacBooks but most definitely a problem with professional setups.
Launchpad crashes all the time, so lets hope that gets fixed fast. And also the full screen transition animation is too slow. That last one would be a breeze fixing.
Also for some reason back and forward gestures are with 2 rather than 3 fingers now. I get it that maybe it's a bit too many fingers but Apple changed the default from SL and that's just confusing. Good news though, you can change desktop switcher to 4 fingers and then back and forward work with both 2 and 3 fingers. Lets hope that's not a bug …
Last but probably not least important, going into full screen mode seems to create a new virtual desktop in some cases. It is a bit confusing because there is no indication of the action and sometimes it is not a very logical one because there are empty desktops …
I am sure there are lost of other little annoyances but those are the ones that have gotten on my nerves so far.
My rants aside, application jails is finally here and with Apple's effort and the AppStore, it will make the OS a lot more secure and possibly stable. Unfortunately, the OS is coming out in a month and what we have today is far from being polished. It will take a couple of updates until we get to the usual OS X experience and unfortunately things are just like with previous releases.

This is well documented and is an advertised feature. I think the indication is that the menu bar and dock slide off the screen. (BTW, if you've just noticed this, where have you been if you have Lion? Scratching my head a little over this one).

I just discovered it so go easy on me if this was not a new feature...
I have just found out that you can "quick look" on items that pop out of a stack in the dock...
Try click on a stack and then simply put the mouse pointer on any item, then press space bar... voilà.
Ain't it swell?

Since Mission Control is using the F3 key as shortcut and Dashboard the F4 key, is there a way to make F5 a shortcut for the Launchpad?

Needed this feature for a long time, seems so simple. But can you somehow 'select' several files at once in the stack to display them in quicklook? Because watching pictures from a stack isn't very ergonomic.
You have to click on the stack, than press the 'open in Finder' button. Cmd + A for select all, press the space bar and it shows you all the files. (And finally the window resizes automatically).
Alternative is to hold command while clicking the stack to open it directly, but it's just not instant. (I'm someone with stacks full of collected pictures that I use several times a day)

Yeah, I wish QuickLook would automatically go to the next or previous picture in the folder even if you only selected a single file. Why do we have to select all of them, and then start from the first file all over again, if I want to quickly look at a few photos one after the other?

Pathfinder does this, and it's a really great feature. I didn't know it was there when I installed it, but it's really helpful for the reasons you outlined.

Ok, another huge issue that I thought was solved.
My 13" Unibody Macbook Pro won't sleep. Close the lid, display goes off, keyboard darkens but the light on the front doesn't strobe and it won't wake up, it just seems to... die. I've checked all the usual suspects, I have no sharing enabled, the spotlight isn't indexing (well it is at the moment because of the most recent crash, but wasn't before I closed the lid) and I just can't seen to figure out what it is. My wife's older mid-2008 15" Macbook Pro with DP2 sleeps just fine but it's been an issue with this laptop with DP2, DP3 and DP4 so it has to be something I'm missing. Any ideas?

Seriously are you are acting as if you are new to the internet. Not every comment, especially one that was directed to one so weirdly written as yours, is meant to be insulting or evil. I didn't intend to attack you in any way, I just found it rather amusing how you expressed your feelings about the sizes. But now you are making it more personal with your behavior that is most definitely sounding insulting.

I'm totally sure that you won't. They may give you the option to create one yourself, but I'm around 95% certain that they won't be shipping them with computers. Why, because after making a big thing about there being no Lion disks available to consumers, it would be redundant to then offer disks. Apple will obviously create some way for the people buying Lion through the MAS to re-install it if their computers crash or something, most likely tied to the apple account used to purchase Lion in the first place, and I would assume that any new Mac customers would use the same method as well

Yes, it can be edited. I mean... as long as you have access to /etc/hosts. I don't know why or if Apple would ever disable functionality of something that's considered such a standard to operating systems in general. Even Windows has a hosts file. :)

The background image used on the login screen is tiled, meaning the image file itself contains a small picture.
Resizing it would pixelate the image too much.

Might help if you describe the bugs. I have Photoshop installed in DP4 Update 1 right now.
How Can I reproduce these bugs?
Basically, in Snow Leopard, when you have Photoshop open with various palettes, and you do a simple Show Desktop or Exposé, some of the palettes stay where they are (sometimes). Try this with the Application Frame on and off (Window > Application Frame). Also, when opening Photoshop in one space, then causing a progress dialog to appear (one that says "Reading Photoshop Format" with a progress bar, for example), and then - once the document is open - switching to another space, causes all future progress dialogs to still appear in the first space, yanking you back to that space each time.
Try moving Photoshop around from one space to another, and having multiple open documents. Try moving one document to one space, and another to another.
In Flash CS5, doing a Show Desktop doesn't always work: the whole app just stays where it is, but becomes unresponsive afterwards, requiring you to click outside the app (which is hard since you can't show the desktop) and click back inside again. Also, while doing an Exposé, some grey rectangles show up, presumably the "backgrounds" of the palettes, and behave like separate windows. When moving Flash from one space to the other, only some of the window gets moved, and parts of it get left behind in the old space. Flash is way more buggy than Photoshop, though.
Thanks for your help!

Remember the "cut and paste" replacement in the Finder? Copy, then Command Option V for "Move here."
Just found a similar option for merging. Copy, then Command Option Shift V. The Edit menu calls it "Paste Item Exactly." Pastes (doesn't move) but alerts you of a folder of the same name and gives you the option to "Keep both" which will merge unique items. Not quite as simple or elegant as I'd expect, but it's at least there.

The Address Book thing never worked for me. Why not just make a new event that repeats yearly, with an alert?
I know it's annoying that you can't easily do this though, I'd love a way to quickly type in 20 birthday dates and have the software take care of the alerts...

I just noticed a cool new feature in Mail, or rather, I should say a system-wide feature.
I had an email confirming a shipment I made with Amazon. In addition to detecting phone numbers and dates, it seems Lion has system-wide recognition for shipment tracking numbers as part of its smart “data detection” mechanisms. When I clicked it, Quicklook opened a mini Safari window with UPS’s package tracking website automatically opened.
Very cool stuff.

I hadn’t noticed this before in Snow Leopard. I googled it, and the only result for “data detector” and “track shipment” was a new feature that came into iOS 4. I didn’t see anything about Macs having this capability too, and since SL came out in 2009 before iOS 4, it’s possible it didn’t have it.

If it's anything like the current detection in iOS, it's worthless to users outside the US. Getting deliveries from Amazon here in Germany inevitably involves DHL, and the only thing I've ever got out of tapping on a DHL shipment number in a mail on my iPhone is a Not Found page on FedEx's US site.
I would say that for this feature to be useful, there needs to be an option in Settings to choose a default shipment tracking company.

Most of my deliveries here in Ireland are done by UPS and the data detectors are hugely useful. I'm not sure if I've used the feature with DHL packages but I don't remember ever being sent to a US site.

I'm going to have to say Snow Leopard and maybe even as far back as Tiger behaved this way. As said, having auto-arrange re-positions the icons according to the grid layout.

No, but there are a lot of tools that will help you do that. The most lightweight and non-intrusive tool I've used that does this is SizeWell, which is free. Set the default behavior for the zoom button to do a full screen resize. The other nice plus is it lets you enable to disable Lion's zooming animation, which is a little jagged on bigger screens.

I just read this and didn't notice the effect you said, I have DP4. In fact I think I found a bug? I have a folder of icons, but have customised it's background to be black, as Lion is simplified even further than usual the Status Bar is missing (the slide rule for this task would then be absent), so, when I enable it the background turns white!
Should that happen? I find the option to turn the Status Bar off in SL greyed out.

Nope. According to Apple (http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/).....Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion.
Buying a new machine is what you will need to do.

Pretty much any machine you buy from Apple would blow away what you have. No offense, but those are some of the lowest specs I've seen in a MacBook in a very long time. You are long overdue for an upgrade.
Get a refurb if you want to save a lot of money. You might also get a couple hundred bucks for your old MacBook.
The alternative is to hack Lion to run on your CPU, which some of the more advanced users on this forum were struggling a lot with. Assuming you aren't technically inclined, I wouldn't even consider this an option.

If all App developers would have complied to the HIG this inconsequent behavior would not exist:
If the user changes a window’s size or location by at least 7 pixels, the new size and location is the user state. The user can toggle between the standard state and the user state by clicking the zoom button. When the user clicks the zoom button of a window in the user state, your application should first determine the appropriate size of the standard state. Move the window as little as possible to make it the standard size, and keep the entire window on the screen. The zoom button should not cause the window to fill the entire screen unless that was the last state the user set.
This makes perfect sense as the window resizes just as much as needed for the content displayed in the window.
D'oh, the fight for the green button is long lost anyway. Why am I wasting my time?

Yeah but look at Safari: press the green button and what happens? The window goes tiny and off-screen in the bottom left corner. And I know this isn't a bug on my system as I have been able to reproduce it on a Tiger machine as well as on another Snow Leopard machine. And I'v never seen it work in Safari! Press it again and the window becomes tall and thinner than it was originally, and you have to manually reposition and re-resize the window to get it right again.
Apple doesn't even pay attention to this, and if even they don't care, they should at least remove the button altogether as all it does it waste pixels and cause people to accidentally click it and screw up their window configuration. And that would free up some space, which would be a perfect place for the Full Screen button (if you ask me it could still be green with a + sign in it, instead of two arrows).

Unfortunately not. It just removes the app files, nothing more. Application Support files stay untouched...
Instead, Apple is "encouraging" dev's to keep app support data organized like it is in iOS, and they said in about 6 months after ship date it will be required that this implemented in all App Store submissions. When this is done, then Launchpad will act as the uninstaller we all hoped and dreamed for for so many years.
This was addressed in the State of the Union address at WWDC this year.

1) If you're going to ask a question, do it in the appropriate thread. This definitely isn't it. You probably chose it out of laziness since it's a sticky with lots of activity, hoping somebody would answer.
2) Write your questions better. I think you're asking about two totally different things: Installing DP4, and then installing VMWare on it once it's done. Writing "+ vmware" could also mean you're trying to install DP4 onto VMware. Again, don't be lazy...

Another thing it's built into Mac os X now, you can navigate the options pressing the tab key, also another hint, almost always there is an alert windows with options like accept or cancel if you hit enter you select accept, and if you hit the spacebar you select cancel!.
In some apps like Photoshop you can select the "Don't save" option by pressing the key D.
Bottom line, enter selects the highlighted button and spacebar selects the border highlighted one, check this example :
Image (http://www.xowave.com/doc/tech-note/images/accept-incoming-network-connections.png)
[maybe this has already been replied to since it was originally posted in feb and i haven't made it all the way through the thread yet... but :D ]
photoshop kinda messed people up on this..
the real way is ⌘D for don't save.. esc for cancel ..return for accept (allow, save, save as..., etc)
(but it appears for the most part, none of this will be necessary in lion with apps tapping in to versioning/autosave)

How confident are all of you that this GM will
support updates through the software update

If this is indeed the final retail version, the
only thing holding me back from installing is
fear that the GM won't have update support.
I am hoping this GM will be the last version

Hey check it out just got one an hour ago.

To be honest, I kind of laughed when you went out and bought a machine that had the *exact* specs that somebody else previously recommended. I don’t know whether this was because that model was the best value, or because you were afraid to deviate from instructions. Anyway, thats a pretty nice upgrade from your previous machine and should easily run Lion. But honestly, man, you need to do a little bit of homework on things such as:
What generation of Intel CPU’s are most current, and which family within that generation do you want (i3, i5, and i7.)
What general range of clock speeds (measured in GHz) is considered current, and which suites your needs.
What size (measured in GB) and speed (measured in MHz) of RAM is available on Apple machines, and do you need to upgrade beyond the amount that machines have standard.
All this stuff is readily available on Apple.com’s product pages, laid out nice and neat on the “Technical Specifications” pages. Example: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html
If anything confuses you, just search the hardware on Wikipedia and they usually give you a whole list of specifications for the product family, such as for core i5’s and core i7’s. Then, after scoping things out, you will have a ballpark idea of what to look for in a machine, and decide how much you want to spend. Once you understand some of the basic numbers, you walk into any Apple store, find products that have the specs clearly listed near the display, and try them out to see how they feel. Until you do this, they remain meaningless numbers. After experiencing thing firsthand how performance can differ between models, you’ll have an appreciation for what these numbers mean.
If you continue posting blind pleas for assistance in purchasing decisions, people are going to have a field day with you. Sure, what I just described requires probably 1 hour of research and 1 hour testing things in a store, but when you’re throwing down $2k for a computer, it’s sort of justified.
By the way, in order to get the full experience of Lion, you need to go out and buy a 16 core Mac Pro when they come out in a month or so. :D

If you want to do a full "clean install" you can download the file from the mac app store and if you right click on it and select "show contents" you will find a .dmg file. If you use Disk Utility to burn that DMG file to a CD or at least a 8 gig flash drive you can then boot from that CD/Flash Drive into the Lion installer and do a full clean install as in the past.

Yeah I was worried about this when I heard about the change they're trying out with Lion. I think that one is going a little too far iO(S)verboard with features better suited to touch - instead it requires mouse interaction if I understand? I think I'd be happier were it left unchanged. Next they'll change copy/paste to the godawful implementation on iOS that we would all be much happier if had never come, ironically.

They're wrong. ;) At least for now. Finder, and most (if not all?) other system applications are 64-bit only now. Your Core Duo is not 64-bit. Even if you did manage to get it to run, like a couple others had, you'd have no Finder, and probably terrible, terrible performance. Won't work until somebody finds a work around.
DP1, however, will work completely and nearly as good as Snow Leopard, in my experience, I might add. :D

I use text editors that I scroll through with the keyboard. i.e. VI style. While this works in Terminal, it does not work in other apps. e.g. my VI plugin in Eclipse... All of the changes are not aesthetic. Lots of changes under the hood as well it seems. I predict we will hear lots of complants about things that used to work that do not work any more. Like network backups that have really never been supported (but people had made them work) and now just do not work. I'll say this, If you want to do your backups over a network...get ready to buy a Time Capsule.

Solution no. 1: Use text-expander. Set it as if you type ".f" or "dot f" it will expand to fffffffffffffffff, same with os, set it to ".o" and it will expand to oooooooo. There are many text expander for mac, one of the more famous one is this:
http://www.smilesoftware.com/TextExpander/
Solution no. 2.: Use OSX's built in auto correct feature. In Language Text > Text > Symbol and Text Substitions. For the 'replace' column add '.f' without quotes, and on the 'with' column add fffffffff, or whatever number of f's you want. The same method for o.
Now whenever you type .f, it will auto replace to ffffffffffff, its much faster than holding f for a few second IMHO.

But the problem is that the number of "f" express how angry you are, so depending on the situation the amount can be more or less :D
I'm not actually saying this is a problem, just that Apple are taking away a - albeit minimal - degree of flexibility with text.
I personally won't mind as I never hold down keys, I always press them multiple times as the repeat rate is too fast for me to control the exact number.

yeah, a lot of the keys are immune.. for instance, you can still make a line with a single press of the hypen.

it's only the letters and numbers that won't auto repeat.
for whatever reason, opt-(letter) will still repeat their character.

When I came to mac from pc world, I imagined that I would never do a fresh install of os again. Awful things like format, setup etc.
So, is it wise to install lion over my existing system, or a fresh install (even in mac world) will lead to better os speeds?
I would do an upgrade and if you see something is wrong / slow, then do a fresh install

You are moved automatically to your desktop. The next time you open the app it'll be opened in full screen mode.

I haven't seen too much of the new Quick Look. How is it? Pros + cons vs. quick look in SL?

It doesn't work for me, at least if I am logged into 2 accounts. I haven't tested to see if that is the trigger. Anyway, if I arrow key from one photo to another sometimes it might switch to displaying the new photo but mostly it just shows grey. If I pres space, wait a second, and press space again, it will display the jpg. Scrolling through photos with the arrow key is a no-go.

Another: when you update an open app in the app store, it offers to quit it for you (rather than requiring you to close it manually).

True, I suggest a different solution then - Anger Management :chuckle:

Nice. They seem to add little bits and pieces of Finder-ness to open/save dialogs with every release - I see the path bar in there now too, another nice. Can we do 32x32 icons in list view there? Or sorts in column view? I assume it's still a matter of changing columns that show up and their orders and sizes on a per app basis - that has always been such a pain.

How about the Open/Save dialog actually remembering the ORDER in which you store your icons in a specific folder? I bet it still can't do that can it? It must be hard to code...

With auto-save, does a document automatically save itself to the computer right away, or do you first save it once yourself wherever you want it and then it auto-saves from then on?

Autosave saves every change that you make - even if the file is not "saved" yet. NB The only app which supports this so far is TextEdit.
A nice side effect of this are lightening fast app shutdowns. :-)

I notice that the 'restart in safari' lock screen option is present even on MBR machines like mine without the recovery partition. Simply causes the machine to reboot normally, but a bit lame they're not checking.

When adding a widget to the dashboard, can you swipe on the trackpad to see the other widgets, or do you still have to press the arrows on the sides?

Apple doesn't really support non-GPT booting of OSX so I can't really fault them for that. It works, sure, but it's not something you should be using really.

How long do you expect Lion to download with a ~1 mbps internet speed?

i think Versions is essentially the local snapshots feature, and then when you are away from your Time Machine backup for a while it will backup these versions/snapshots when you reconnect the backup disk.

As far as OSX is concerned it's a GPT drive (that is, it's a hybrid GPT/MBR drive): just one without a recovery partition. There are lots of scenarios where someone could be running Lion on a drive without a recovery partition, and hence 'restart to Safari' would fail.
Not a big issue by any means, but one that could easily be sorted by checking for the presence of the partition.

Thats a bit misleading. That makes it sound like you can get a snapshot of every character or whatever you do.
I was under the impression that it saves every 15 minutes or when certain other actions are taken (like switching to a different application).

I already tried everything, still a delay. Will report it to Apple, but I hoped I could get it confirmed in this forum before I do it.
I had that delay, but if you disable "Smart Zoom" in Trackpad settings under System preferences, the delay vanishes. It seriously sucks, but thats that I guess.
I like the new way of scrolling, but in minecraft again, hot bar scrolling is inverted and that feels wrong even if you're used to inverted scrolling everywhere else. haha
Any way to turn off auto correct?

Actually I found it, its under 'Language and Text' in the 'Text' tab in sysprefs "Correct Spelling Automatically"
But it looks like you have to restart your apps for the change to take effect..
Anyways. I'm surprised by the lack of customization options in the Finder sidebar! Folders I placed there in SL can't be drag-poofed out (admittedly they can be removed via rightclick) and having devices at the bottom irks me.. I also found in General System Preferences the sidebar icon label sizes can be tweaked back to small. Dunno if its been said..
I feel like I have to do too many workarounds for a workable workflow.... haha

I don't know if it has been reported already: new tabs in Safari now open close to their "mother" tab where they originate from and not like in SL that all new tabs were opening at the bottom.
I noticed this, too! I like it.
(and no one had pointed this out on this thread yet).

If you hit command-G it will group them in a folder for you, no need for the menu. Pretty cool.
Command-G doesn't work on my system (in Finder or any folder). But it's nice to have the Control-click drop-down for it. Nice feature.

I always need some kind of security on all systems. So I did in SL use TM on an with PGP (Whole disk) encrypted external FW drive. With File vault 2 is there a chance to backup on time capsule and have the backup encrypted, would be great if that would work.....
or would be an decrypted copy like in SL??
Thanks

One more thing, is it just me or is the two finger scrolling (in Safari or mail for example) exactly opposite direction than in SL ? Can that be changed somewhere, for me it is just more natural to scroll down when i want to move down a page...

If you mean the sort order, then yes, the Open/Save dialogs do remember what sorting you set in the Finder.
