Quick question for those of you already using Lion, if I have QuickTime 7 installed on SL and upgrade to Lion is it left alone and still functional or does it get removed like Rosetta?

Command-G doesn't work on my system (in Finder or any folder). But it's nice to have the Control-click drop-down for it. Nice feature.

It's now "Control + Command + N"

Quicktime 7 stays, which is lucky because version x is still terrible for anything other than playback of .mov files. The sooner they add more options for export and plugins the better. At the moment it's useless. :/

Thanks for letting me know, at least one of my concerns with Lion is put to rest. I couldn't stand using QuickTime 10 on SL and it sounds as if it is still just as hopeless in Lion. :(

There was a CBS TV medical series called Three Rivers in 2009 where they use very large, transparent displays. The opening of files and manipulation of data was reminiscent of what IOS or Lion OS might be, or become. It is so similar to what I have seen of these OS's that I wonder if this was a real OS prototype based on Apple's research. It appeared extremely realistic, and useful. On the other hand, perhaps it was all just f/x.

Does anybody have any information on the history of their very cool computer interface?

On ones "My Card" in Address Book, there are check boxes that allow you to choose what and what not to share.

this exists in 10.6 and i'm pretty sure it was there before that.

I meant the export options it presents. They all seem to be for idevices or sharing straight to websights. Quicktime 7 allows me to choose from way more formats to export as, something that I need to do a lot.

For playback quicktime x is fine, but for conversion at the moment it just stinks. Still I guess that's why it's called quicktime player.

Perian works with Quicktime X...

Doesn't it only work because it uses quicktime 7 in the background? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that was the case. I remember seeing somewhere that if you open up an unsupported movie file in x, in activity monitor you can see 7 as a background process to play it, even if you're using x.

Perian does indeed seem to launch using the Quicktime7 'legacy bridge', in 32 bit mode no less.

I've also noticed that Quicktime never seem to start when launching files from the finder: the Quicktime icon bounces then disappears. I have to launch it a second time for it to take. Some problem with inniating Quicktime7 perhaps.

iTunes no longer hogs the play/pause key. If there is another app that uses it currently in focus like QuickTime or VLC, pausing doesn't resume the play of music in iTunes.

When all apps are in the background (iTunes, VLC, QT for example), the app that last was in focus gets control of the play/pause key.

for me in Snow Leopard the pause/play button works fine for whichever media app is in the foreground. if iTunes is in the background it pauses and the foreground window plays, then go back to iTunes and press the play key and it continues playing again.

edit: just tested Spotify and it continues playing, you will have to wait for Spotify to fix that issue.

This probably isn't the right thread for this question, but i didn't want to start a new one, for such a small issue.

When Apple releases the incremental updates to the OS do they ever bring in new features? i've had a Mac for about 8 months, and in the 2/3 updates i've applied, i've never got new features, except the Mac App Store. Obviously i understand Apple was lowering their focus on SL at this point due to Lion's progression. But can we expect some new features to be added in the 10.7.X updates, rather than just bug fixes etc?

TLDR: Are Apple likely to add any new features in 10.7.X updates, rather than just bug fixes?

Yes. They're rare, though. They usually happen in .1 or .2 releases to address major oversights. The Dashboard Manager in Tiger was added in a patch, and 10.5.2 added an option to disable the translucent menu bar, as well as reintroduced hierarchical folders in the dock, and sorting options for stacks. There may be more, but those are the ones that I remember.

Scrolling with inertia was added as an update to Snow Leopard. They do add some minor things from time to time, but not significant things (except the App Store, but that's not really part of the OS but a standalone app, even if it's integrated quite a lot).

Yes, but don’t set your expectations high. Consider Lion is done for the next two years with nothing new coming.

Instead, shift your expectation to new apps that’ll be more innovative because of the new APIs in Lion.

I bet majority of people won’t recognize more than a few new features in Lion but will recognize a lot of new apps that are optimized for Lion only.

Can somebody check if this feature is still in the current state of Lion : In DP1 if you hover over an app icon in the Dock and with wheel moose scroll up you get that app's expose view regardless wether it is the front app or not.

If so I see it as the new modified approach to windows management.

I am ambivalent about Spaces being dropped for Mission Control but the option above is an acceptable alternative.

It's still working in GM using a Magic Mouse: two fingers double tap on the icon.

I actually meant using the wheel on an old fashioned mouse but no mater....

Just looking at the expose setup in DP 1 again, with that action on the Dock icon for each app and, it is overall much neater than the set up in Older versions of OS X. Barring being attached to the old way of using spaces, it is better in that Expose is exclusive to each app. This means that there is less of a cluttered visual experience where before every window that was open from every app had to be seen. In Lion it is better because you generally know which app the window you are looking for hides in so you can Expose it through the Dock app icon. Another aspect which is better is that the Expose shows all the windows for the app no matter which Space they are in. Another nice touch is for apps like text edit where recent files also appear under the devising line for hidden windows.

Moving on to Mission Control, which I originally hated and if one is not hung up on having 16 spaces (4x4) for their workflow, it is in many ways more intuitive, keeping the more mundane task of moving stuff between space separate from Expose. In Lion you can grab just one window to move or all the windows for an app by dragging its icon. In the Leopards to move all windows you had to press some key or other, proving the point that it was a lot less intuitive because for the life of me i can't remember the operator key, I used it so rarely.

One other tidbit. In Finder when using the new arrangement feature where files are segregated into rows and appear in coverflow form, if you don't have one of the new fangled HIDs and just use an old fashioned mouse, you can scroll forward by clicking at the right hand side of the finder view row or back by doing so on the left. Nice touch.

Lastly, I an noticing as I type this some nice blue hatched underlining on some word as I type. Not red or green, just blue. What does this signify and what outrageous sin am I committing against the English language?

If you are in one space with an app and you double tap and icon of the app that has window on a different space the animation is funny. Spaces slide from one to the other in an unnatural way.

This pet peeve of mine has been fixed in Lion!

In Lion (GM) you can finally enable any columns you want in list view for search results (except version and comments) which also mean that you can sort the list by any of these criteria!

You could do the same in Tiger, but in Leopard the list view for search results was extremely crippled, you were limited to name, type and last opened (not even creation of modification date!). Snow leopard brought some columns back, like the creation and modification dates, but size and others were still disabled.

I had found a way to enable the other columns in SL by modifying a plist, but they were buggy. Sorting by size would yield inconsistent and weird results. Thank god they are back and work well in Lion!

Note: to have sortable columns in Lion's Finder you need to set the "Arrange by" menu to "none".

"full screen" is not like windows - it doesn't just blow up the window to fit the screen, it adjusts the UI to take advantage of the fact that it owns the whole screen.

as a result, apps need to be updated - the OS can't possibly know what would be an appropriate use of the full screen.

I remember Apple saying a while back (late last year) that the mail bounce feature was super buggy, even to the point where it was inadvertently confirming our addresses to spammers a lot of the time. 141.38 hard drive space

You're fine.

Some questions I have about Lion:
- What is the gesture to go back in the browser? In the past it was 3 fingers swipe on the trackpad or 2 fingers on the Magic Mouse, now I get the Dashboard instead. This is really annoying and I can't change the gestures in the System Preferences.
- After I installed Lion, the fonts in the Opera browsers are horrid. Everything is now very bold and I prefer how it was before. The other browsers aren't giving me a hard time.
- Is there a possibility to change the Dashboard button on the keyboard (F4) not to open the Dashboard, but the Launchpad instead?
- I had parallels desktop installed previously which I unistalled and I deleted the Win7 partition, but now when I open the Launchpad I find all the old icons to my windows bootcamp partition and don't have a clue how to delete them.

Looking forward to some answers...

It's called "Swipe between pages" in Mouse and Trackpad now. I was confused at first as well. Default for Magic Mouse is one finger which doesn't work in Chrome. I disabled the Full Page App swipe and switched it back to Browser.

It feels like the whole Mac is running faster after the update. iTunes running 64 bit could be opened within a second and swapping between full screen apps feels great. One little thing I love is that the preview doesn't turn off when I switch to another program. It continues to play the music I'm previewing:)

Looks like you gotta wait till the browsers roll out their updates (for the one finger page navigation).
As nice as it would be I can live without it for now. I'd eventually like to move two finger swipe back to full screen and use the one finger swipe for page nav.

If you hold down the command-key when Spotlight's Quicklook popover is shown, an info bar appears whose content switches between the file's name and its location. To show only the location, additionally press the option-key
If you switch pages within a file's icon preview, and right afterwards open the file itself, Preview.app sends you to the proper page
TextEdit uses a search bar now, and has pre-defined search patterns to choose from
When command-tabbing through apps by holding down the tab-key, the selection now stops at the rightmost app instead of cycling through, as it did on Snow Leopard
Safari's web content process automatically quits itself about a minute after Safari has been last used, if no more Safari windows are open
If you drag icons out of a stack from a hidden dock, the dock now stays visible during the dragging operation.
Quicktime Player 7 runs fine

I am also a bit urgh about the whole swipe gestures.

In particular, I can two finger swipe in safari. After changing switching between pages gesture to 2 or 3 finger swipe (so I can swipe in finder), now I can also three finger swipe in safari. But the animation is different from two finger swipe.

Furthermore, I want to be able to 2 finger swipe in finder too. Why can't I?

Jul 20, 2011, 12:22 PM
I'm new but I figured out the swipe gestures. If you go into the trackpad settings under "More Gestures". Do these settings:
Swipe Between Pages - Three Fingers
Swipe Between Full Screen Apps - Four Fingers
Mission Control - Up Four Fingers
App Expose - Down Four Fingers
Launchpad and Desktop are enabled.

That seems to restore the three finger back/forward swipe for finder and chrome. The up/down three finger swipe that I normally used in Sparrow doesn't seem to work still. Anyone have any ideas in that?

Edit: Looks like the two-finger back/forward in Safari no longer works by doing this. Three fingers does back/forward just fine but with no animation.

So nobody is annoyed of not being able to manual order aka drag&drop spaces and fullscreen apps in mission control. I always end up in complete different mission control each time, not finding anything. Thats my major complaint.

And i found Launchpad unusable since i am not willed to sort over 400 Apps (even deinstalling Apps for some Apps and other stupid stuff) while not even being able to remove icons from it. Which sense does it have either way? Most important Apps are in the dock & Spotlight Application Launch is way faster – it's just there to give it a small more iPad feel.

Is it just me or is is Mission Control pretty much Expose, only now they've given it a normal name and installed in on the dock so most people will find it. It does absolutely nothing different that it did in Leopard.

I was never a fan of Spaces, but thats still there, just called 'Desktop 1' and 'Desktop 2' now.

---

Launch pad, just another pointless way to open your applications? Is the Dock, Applications folder, Spotlight, or just good old Finder not enough for everyone?

---

On the plus side Mac Mail has improved. I would have been nice if they could have actually added the option to use HTML though, or even a simple link display text like you get in Google Mail. Would that have actually been so hard?

All in all this is all shiny stuff, and there no substance to any of it. No really, nothing a long term mac user didn't already have at their disposal. I'm glad it was only £21.

This feature is was a bit long to post in this forum, so I wrote up a little post about it.

I believe there is an option in the System Prefs > Mission Control where you can check if you want the desktops arranged by when they were last opened. IE. I believe it always goes to desktop 1 because it's the most recently opened, you can uncheck this if I'm not mistaken.

I agree with you actually. What will exactly be the difference between push notifications and what we already have?

Does anyone know if Lion now boots the 64 bit kernel by default?

My MBP 5,1 is capable of booting the 64 bit kernel in SL (holding down 6 and 4 during boot) but boots the 32 bit kernel by default.

Has Lion changed this by any chance?

I'd like to know this as well.

Gripe: Has anyone else noticed that there is no more swipe left or right to go backwards and forwards on webpages? I used that feature all the time... :(

I'm using the magic mouse, and if I swipe left with 1 finger it goes "back"

If I swipe left with 2 fingers it goes to my desktop, and then again goes to dashboard.

Are you guys talking about using trackpads then?

That isn't a push notification, that is just an application giving a message that would appear offline or online.

Push Notifications come from Apple's servers, and an example would be the badge count on the App Store increasing automatically when there's updates available.

I'm not really sure why we need push notifications on the Mac - things like widgets in dashboard work fine, along with Mail coming an unread message count and IM programs doing their thing.

Push notifications on iOS are really just to combat multitasking and battery. Something that isn't really an issue with a laptop or desktop.

I believe there is an option in the System Prefs > Mission Control where you can check if you want the desktops arranged by when they were last opened. IE. I believe it always goes to desktop 1 because it's the most recently opened, you can uncheck this if I'm not mistaken.

No man there isn't an option, I checked :(

Not sure if it was mentioned but 1 finger double tapping the magic mouse zooms into reader mode similar to iOS on a webpage and back/forward page is now a 1 finger left or right swipe. Going between the desktop and dashboard is now the 2 finger left to right swipe and a 2 Finger double tap takes you into Mission Control.

You can change the scrolling back to normal in preferences under trackpad. You can also change it so you can go back and forth in finder or google chrome for example. Also in trackpad > more gestures and change Swipe between pages to "Swipe with two or three fingers"

You can only do it on MacBooks with glass trackpads. On the older models, you're SoL.

they don't allow that on the "old" style trackpad with the non-multi touch (yet it recognizes two fingers vs one). So I have kept it inverted on my macbook pro so I don't get confused

Has anyone found a solution regarding being able to use multitouch gestures in Safari (or any web browser) that'll allow for opening and closing tabs, including switching between them?

I do enjoy the 2 finger swipe to return to previous safari pages, but I'd truly consider Safari a powerhouse if I was able to open and close tabs and switch between them all on the trackpad and not having to hit command+t or command+w...

I heard Multi-Clutch is proving errors for many people w/ Lion, as i'd imagine BetterTouchTool would be doing the same.

BetterTouchTool is working perfectly fine for me under Lion. I have the 2 finger Pinch-In and Pinch-Out gestures set to close and open new tabs respectively. You can also set a gesture to switch between tabs by setting the gesture's option to the keystroke (Control-Tab) that switches between tabs.

Have multiple desktops set up, and open Safari in one of them. make it full screen, then switch away.

Anyone notice with Finder ignores the options set to open in particular desktop?

Its displays under Options as "Desktop 2" for example, but this is just visual, Finder opens in any desktop you are currently on.

The new lock screen in Lion is good, however previously you didn't really notice the delay in time-outs. Previously, the screen blanked, before the screensaver kicked so it wasn't an issue.

Still ... a good feature.. I just need to get the hang of it.

For all the writers among us.

I couldn't live without the keyboard system tool DoubleCommand. It lets the second Enter key on my 2007 MBP 3.1 (right of the right Command key—can anybody tell me why we do need a second Enter key replica?) act as a Forward Delete function (= the only key I really missed when I left Windows years ago—I know there is fn-backspace and ctrl-d but I want it directly with ONE hit).

You can download the free application here:
http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/

After the Lion upgrade the 32-bit-function didn't work any more. I didn't touch it since I bought my MBP, it "survived" all other OS upgrades and I had to think about it for 30 min because I have completely forgotten the name—it resides in the system settings "other" at the bottom and it's NOT a standard Mac OS feature (but maybe it should). In short: A new install of DoubleCommand made it working again.

So maybe that helps some1 who has to ponder like me why and where to that function is gone and how to revive it.

A couple of little niggles. These might have easy fixes I don't know about.

2 finger scrolling backwards in safari. Now fixed to 3 fingers thank you to a previous post.

Finder seems to keep reverting back to sort by name rather than sort by last modified which is annoying for what I do. I have to download a file frequently to upload to our webshop and have almost uploaded an old file by mistake.

Finder no longer has the info bar showing 1 item 250gb available

The new Finder side bar isn't as nice as the old one in my opinion.

Mail has a nice new look, but can it be set to split horizontally rather than vertically?

Mail's mailbox icons are too box and I have to now scroll down to view them all. My many rules for sorting are now hiding emails if the mailbox starts with the letters M and onward

Mail's unread counter in the dock is unreadable unless you have a big dock which I don't. Half my apps seems to have the new icon and half have kept the old icon. Skype has the new one and Adium old...

Chrome is easy to pop into full screen, but not as easy as safari to get out of it. had to go into the view settings to get back out of full screen. safari has the little icon in the top right.

just my 2p :)

For those using "Reeder" in Lion. I noticed one annoyance:

In SL, if you "opened" an article link in the Reeder pane, it would expand the entire article by taking you to the submitting website (within Reeder). To get back to the "Reeder" compressed format of the article, a three-finger swipe would quickly get you back. Now, the three-finger swipe within Reeder will move you to another desktop (mission control).

Two annoying Lion Mail issues. I've tried to fix them without success.

1. Keyboard (Apple KB) letter repeat won't work. If I want to type AAAAA, for example, the A key won't repeat. Symbols and punctuation marks will repeat. Numbers won't.

2. The old spelling notification (the wiggly red underlining) is gone, and in its place the only thing seems to be the iOS style of automatic word substitution or suggestion.

I regularly email in a couple of obscure foreign languages. Auto correct makes this very annoying. Does anybody know how to turn on the simple old-style word-flagging? Is it gone?

I'm overall pretty happy with Lion. But what's killing me is the placement of the dictionary app in the spotlight menu. I've installed a German dictionary and thesaurus, and as a sixth year student of German (as a foreign language), I use the spotlight dictionary to get the general sense of words I don't know. In SL, I had it placed right below the Top Hit item so that I could get there as quickly as possible, since that's what I use Spotlight for most (I use Alfred for everything else). Now it looks like you can't move the dictionary app up from it's place under everything else. Does anyone know if I'm just missing something in the preferences or if I'm just stuck this way?

<insert favorite deity name> help us, repeating letters are gone everywhere.

Obviously it's happening at a lower level in Lion than I thought.

I thought it was only in Mail, but it's in every application that can accept text from the KB -- except Terminal.

It's hard to understand why there's no setting for this (assuming there isn't). I accept that it makes sense on iOS devices, but I don't see the point on any other device.

Hmmm. That's very good to know. I'll try to figure out what I've set wrong. Maybe there's some interaction between Mail Preferences and System Preferences. I'll set everything back on and go test.

I hope I didn't panic. I hate panicking publicly.

there are a few other options, but I cant remember if i changed them or not

when you are composing a new email, have a look under the edit option at spelling, there is another one there for auto correct spelling, I have this un selected but cant remember if i changed it or not

This is because of the iOS-type popup that shows up on certain letters when you hold the key down. I'm not sure if there is a way to disable this.

A found this on Web. Just execute this on terminal:

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

I'm not sure if I can link the source here but ....

spending time looking at new features does make sense (as some people said)

I didnt initially like the 'All My Files' section in Finder

just been looking into it and it is genius, seems to nicely replace the search folders from Snow Leopard

I think I've got it, thanks to your hint.

If Check Spelling in Mail Prefs is set to "as I type," and under Language and Text in System Prefs "Correct spelling automatically" is selected

and

in Mail, under Edit (where you led me) the Substitutions option has "Text replacement" selected -- then you get the behavior that bothered me.

Thanks! I could have lived with what I was getting, but I didn't like it.

Perfect! Thanks so much. I confess I didn't do a web search for that problem.

What a community this is!

Wait, no windows Snap feature???

FAIL

/sarcasm

To be honest this is the one feature Win 7 has that I like. However, it can be obtained in Lion by downloading the Better Touch Tool.

I just wish the new airs still had a disk drive for all of those 3.5" diskettes I've got. How will I install drivers for my 56K modem without it?

HECK YEAH! Using Safari Full Screen plus a couple of additional screens (spaces), using Launchpad (rearranged the apps) and of course Mission Control = NO NEED for dock! I've hidden it for the first time ever, and for the past couple of days I haven't used it but a couple of time.
It's amazing how much difference these gestures make for me... I'm ALL for Lion!

Bugs I encountered:

1. Two/Three finger swipe to go back and forth in Finder does not work all the time. I will have to scroll up and down first before it works.

2. Going into System Preference to adjust the 'Key Repeat' and 'Delay until Repeat' for the keyboard DOES NOT WORK. I tried putting it at all settings but pressing down on a key will NOT repeat.

Edit. To fix the key repeat, enter this into terminal : defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

and press enter.

Someone else please tell me they also encountered these bugs.

Wow, I'm ever surprised when I hear someone in favour of snap! I hate how much control it takes away - "oh you're moving this window off the screen and out of the way, I suppose you actually want it to take up the WHOLE SCREEN!" To me it is Clippy mentality. What I do like about it is you can turn it off, under the guise of improving performance :).

This is one of (if not everything) that JiTouch does better than BTT (for me). I used to use BTT for a very long time and loved it. But then it glitches on me and I had to re-assign all my gestures again (as they had been lost) and this is when I discovered JiTouch and it's just a much simpler, much cleaner program and with it's character recognition I find that it even further streamlined my workflow more so than BTT did with all it's gesture enhancements.

But the windows snap feature is a simple gesture in JiTouch, if i swipe to the left with my index and ring finger, the window snaps to the left half of the screen and vice-versa. The only things is BTT allows you to actually snap into quarters, which JiTouch doesn't, but considering i'm on a MBP, I don't really need that as the area gets too small. If I was on a 27" iMac, quarters wouldn't be such a bad idea.

The only problem is that JiTouch isn't free. But I found it worth the money. Regardless BTT is great, I just prefer the ease and simplicity of JiTouch.
