I am quite pleased with the 10.7 -> 10.7.2 update. Smoother performance in my experience. Have not had any problems. I upgraded from 10.6.8 (no issues) to 10.7 (some issues) to 10.7.2 (no issues so far).

Although Lion feels currently to have a little bit of an identity crisis with what appears to be an apparent shift towards iOS interface fusion, I am hoping that future upgrades to OS X will also continue to cater to users that prefer traditional structures of the current file systems, finder improvements and interface customization to promote the availability of user-choices.

Personally I dont care much for gestures on desktops but can see how useful they could be without a mouse on laptops. Seems to me that having to remember more and more gestures (up, two, three, swipe-left, one-down etc) detracts from a simplified user experience agenda especially when these gestures are not universal across applications. Perhaps we may see more keyboard +trackpad swiping combinations to compound any confusions within a growing feature set of the OS and Applications too?!

I'm quite new to the Mac and i LOVE using the gestures on my MBP trackpad. One of the best things about owning a Mac.

I was using my dad's Windows 7 laptop today and i was ilke 'why aren't these gestures working?' then i realised! :D

I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but the Quick Look background is now white (duh) but also blurs the background. Out of personal curiosity, how does Apple do this? They also use the same technique with stacks too.

No, I mean Mission Control (it also works in Launchpad). I'm sorry it's actually Cmd M. It will use motion blur to switch spaces.

Some users may like them, some users may hate them, personally mine is 'neutral', but still acceptable.

On the new MBP (the new ones bunked with Lion) Apple updated the keyboard, and replaced F4 Key with Lauchpad, instead of Dashboard (as previously Macs)

FN + F12 solved this, although the key only donated volume, so its confusing.

Unrelated, in OS X when you use full screen apps (e.g. Safari, Mail), Mission Cron shows these apps on the far right, instead of showing then full screen in their own space.

When in full screen and and app need your attention, rather than displaying the full dock and showing the user where the "bounce" is coming from. You see a bounce in mid air from an "unknown" place. lol. neat.

Lastly, at first i thought this was a issue with Apple products but i tried Firefox, but switching from full screen back to Window, looses default Window size.

Not really that a big deal, as it probably looks better that way on a widescreen.

If only Firefox can do the same "sliding" motion Safari browser does.

Not sure if anyone has noticed/posted this, but hey ho. If you hold down shift when opening/minimizing, or anything that involves a dock animation. It will slow down.

Worked on SL and on Lion

it's been there for a while now... but the new thing that noticed just now, is when you're in Launchpad and you press the 'option' key, the icons will start to wiggle, and they'll stop when you stop pressing 'option'... so if you need to quickly delete an app, just press option and delete it, no more the need to click and hold on an icon! nice add...

You can Lock a document to prevent changes "read only" basically. but then that also prevents it from being manually saved by the user, which is what i want control over.

Basically, having Autosave seems good in an OS, who forgets to save, but for someone like me. I want control... (its fine for those "odd" times, but then those "odd" time I don't save, I do it deliberately.

In short: i know exactly what i am doing or not doing.

I only wish this was an option in Lion, not a feature. Much like gestures.. you have the ability to turn them off.....

The only thing that coms close to this is the "Lock after... " option in System Preferences, but unfortunately, only for Time Machine backups.

you can use this to prevent autosave, but it seemed to much hassle when I was trying it out

Open your document and unlock if necessary
Go into Finder, Get Info on file and lock it (this needs to be done after doc is open otherwise system removes this lock)
you can now edit document without it autosaving (I got 1 prompt saying it couldn't autosave)
when you go to save it gives a warning that its locked, the button says save anyway and will save it

bit of a hassle, but if you have a large doc that you don't want to autosave, this should prevent it

If you have an app with windows in multiple spaces, clicking on that app's dock icon cycles through the spaces with those windows.

Gotta like these hidden keyboard shortcuts that display alternative menu items, when keys are held down.

- Finder menu bar >> Go menu (Hold down Control to toggle "Enclosing folder".... to "Enclosing folder in this Window" and associated shortcut

- Finder menu >> Go menu (Hold down Option instead to add Library folder access).
Option in Finder Edit menu to change "Select all" to "deselect all"
- Option in Finder Apple menu to change "About This Mac" to "System Information" and change shortcut off logging off.

10.7-10.7.2 is a game changer. Went from going back to .6 to lovin' it. Very futuristic OS if you know some of its secret inner workings.
Is someone compiling a list of keystrokes, swipes and other subtle command types that lie beneath the surface? Would be great asset for acceptance and a huge motivator for more of the same.
Wow, I am loving it!

Not knowing if they are only here since lion. but 'tricks' I found when exploring to alter my user experience since working with lion. In Snow Leopard I had my routine of doing things really fast with expose,... and in the beginning I worked much slower on lion. Now i Love it.

- Hold Option key when you click on an app in the dock, you'll see only that app opening. even if you have other windows already open.

- when you put System preferences in your dock and 'right-click' on it you can choose the desired prefpane straight away.

- spotlight search system preferences prefpanes.

- cmd + left or right arrow helps you get to the opposite side of a text field...

also i recommend using JITouch ( a BetterTouchTool alternative).

No because this is a OS X Lion thread, not an iTunes thread.

Launchpad is completely different from Finder thus changes in Launchpad will not be reflected in Finder and vice versa. If you want to organise apps then only do so in Launchpad. If you organise the apps in Finder you can get quirky stuff when using the Mac App Store. Apparently Apple intended sorting apps to be a Launchpad only thing.

No because this is a OS X Lion thread, not an iTunes thread.

OS X Lion provides the notification functionality for iTunes to use.

Launchpad is completely different from Finder thus changes in Launchpad will not be reflected in Finder and vice versa.
That's overstating it, since adding or deleting an app in either Launchpad or Finder is reflected in both views. With other launchers or even the Windows start menu, this is not necessarily the case.

Just been browsing OS X Daily (http://osxdaily.com/) and I came across this cool gesture that's kind of "hidden" in Lion.

It allows you to instantly jump to the most recently used space with a four finger tap (it's a four finger double tap on my machine but whatever...)

Open terminal and insert:

defaults write com.apple.dock double-tap-jump-back -bool TRUE;killall Dock

and hit enter and you're done!

To disable it, insert this into the terminal and hit enter:

defaults delete com.apple.dock double-tap-jump-back;killall Dock

Enjoy :)

For those people having issues running programs on a 64-bit system, you no longer need to restart your mac and hold down the keys to switch your "entire" mac in 32-bit mode.

It works on an-app-by-app basis.

Open Applications folder, find the app you want to run and right click "Get Info"(Command+I). You'll see a check box for 32-bit mode, check it and close the dialog. then re-run your app

Source: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3771 for Itunes, but works anywhere.

This is not OS related.. but I would think, hardware support.

Bootcamp 4.0 (version that comes with Lion) does not Windows XP or Vista.

Only Windows 7 is supported by Apple.

Even the Apple support site doesn't work, as I tried to overwrite the Bootcamp 4.0 with 3.1. ,, I got an error in Windows stating "Bootcamp requires 3.1 or later" kind of a, confusing.

Why would you wanna run Windows XP on late 2011 based Macs ? Well, games for starters. Unless the developer supports Windows 7, or you can use Windows 7 compatibility mode, which doesn't always work, you'll be out of luck.

Even XP mode wouldn't do the job as that still virtual.. like running Parallels.

Thanks allot Apple. :P You just my life more difficult.

This could also be a good reason to keep your older Mac as well. :) :apple:

I'm distressed that I cannot request reader receipt with my emails as I have I have always done without having to hassle clients or myself in worrying whether the email was received at least. This was an option I took for granted with Outlook.
In addition I cannot save the changes to my stationery to be default as I begin a new email, but have to LABORIOUSLY re-create each email's stationery with my BRANDING. This is insane, illogical, not considered in the software design, somebody sneezed while designing and forgot what he was doing? Maybe.
I must have these 2 facilities.
Any help out there?
I have lodged this complaint with Apple in LA as an oversight on their part. For the request reader receipt I was able to speak to a humanoid assistant who tried his best and told me I WOULD HAVE TO SEND the 'reader receipt' matter TO FEEDBACK.
This is hard to believe. I did this and feel my request might have landed on iCloud but not penetrated as I have no acknowledgement or accountability of this request.
Help please... I put out a lot of money for this pretty machine

This is a feature with which OS X users have to live without for the time being i believe, unless someone has more accurate info, i don't use read receipts, so have never needed the functionality.

If you do desperately need such a function, you can use alternate email clients, i know that outlook is now included as part of Office for mac 2011. That might be a feasible option for the time being, also you have plenty of free clients which might work in the mean time. :)

There is a list of more suitable alternatives on the macrumors wiki http://guides.macrumors.com/Mac_Beginner%27s_Guide

Hope that helps

I dragged it into my Finder sidebar for quick and easy access in the future.

You're right. Doesn't work.

The option for changing the Launchpad background has also been disabled, so it seems.

Shame, I really liked the motion blur and B&W Launchpad.

On a related note to 10.7.3, is anybody else experiencing a welcome increase in free RAM? With 10.7.2 my 4GB used to be depleted, sometimes reaching ~70MB, with the rest as inactive; however, with 10.7.3 I'm noticing that inactive memory seems to be more regularly flushed.

Is there a way to modify the timing of the transitions/effects? Such as how long it takes for elements like the slide down of the save file dialog, or the moving between spaces? There's also the small delay before the space you've changed to, to activate the application. Like if you wanted to change the song in iTunes that's sitting in it's own space, you have to wait that tiny time before your right arrow would register.

Discovered this completely by accident. At first I thought it was a bug or something.

But it's a very handy feature. I don't know if this is just a Lion feature or if everyone knows about it but:

If you have multiple windows on the desktop and you want to move an app that is at the back but don't want to make it the foreground app, you can press command and then drag the window. It will move it without making that window the foreground app/window! Definite time saver and cool feature, that one! :D

Here is one little (and annoying to me) issue I found in 10.7

When using Quicktime 7 .midi music files play at a very reduced volume output. And even maxing out your sound output does not do all that much. Quicktime X will not play .midi music files anymore.

And I am yet to find a free app that will play these .midi files on OS X.
VLC won't even play .midi sound/music files anymore.

Does anyone know of a fix/workaround for this?

I gotta say that 10.7.3 is generally stable. I had some crap going on with USB and monitors after the initial install, but it ironed out somehow on second restart and hasn't appeared again.

Launchpad is a good idea.
Mission Control is good, too.
Pretty much the only annoying thing is the constant spelling correction I can't get control of. Since I write in German, English, and sometimes Japanese, I loathe how it will try to respell my German as English.

The new look in iCal/Calendar is OK, but it really isn't better. The old, simple style was actually excellent, but they needed to add more customization to the program.

Mail's iPhone-type style is AWFUL. Sorry Apple, but it really lacks format emphasis the old program had. Works good on the lil' screens, but it is pretty crap on a large screen. Info-wonky style.

I'm still probing around for all the little things. I dislike DVD Player doing full screen with both screens going black. Why?

If you organise the apps in Finder you can get quirky stuff when using the Mac App Store. Apparently Apple intended sorting apps to be a Launchpad only thing.

Which is going to bite them in the ass someday because with multi-gig downloads and their respective data files its not all that hard to fill a hard-drive. By forcing all applications be tied to the Applications folder, regardless of where I want to put them, is a royal pain in the ass.

Its not easy to upgrade the hard-drive in an iMac but its real easy to hook up an external drive.

Our major university has advised us that no one should install Lion citing these as some of the many reasons not to do so:
• Adobe Creative Suite 5 (CS5) does not work on OS X Lion
• The Faculty of Arts shared drives are not accessible with OS X Lion installed
• Mac Mail client setup is problematic on OS X Lion
• Parallels 5 is not compatible with OS X Lion
May I add, Quick Time does not work with previously accessible files, nor do .pdf downloads in Firefox and Safari which with Lion have constant plug in crashes.* Indeed, to my knowledge Lion users are having so numerous and varied issues they are too numerous to list, like computers no shutting down.

I have been an enthusiastic and exclusive Mac user for many years and had more app crashes and malfunctions with Lion than all other previous operating systems combined. Why did Apple release such a problematic OSX with so many serious faults? Are loyal mac computer users now just guinea pigs to help satisfy the demands of the apple i device hoards for superficial gimmickry? And more to the point, when will apple fix this mess of an osx?

Not really an issue here in Mail, but when the user starts checking for new messages, but before it finishes , go to menus, the "audible" sound is *not* heard till "after" the user has finished with menus.

Best tested with IMAP account. e.g. Gmail,Yahoo etc... but its there.

This could either be (a. just a sound delay or (b the checking of new mail is also delayed.

Not really an issue, just thought is was worth noting.

Small findings for Mac OS X 10.7.4

1. The Mac OS X in the About This Mac uses Myriad Pro as the font. (Not sure why, they're going to change it to OS X in 10.8 anyway)

339079

2. The same dialog is no longer centered horizontally.

3. Updated linen background in the login screen.

For those of you that frequently use the "Go" menu, to either "Connect to Server", or "Connect to Folder" .. you can easily access this by holding button on Finger icon in Dock, till context menu appears as well.:D

Of course, this was always possible with Leopard.

The good thing is how you can manually drag and drop to create folders, now on on Mac.

How is the battery life on OSX 10.7.4? I downgraded to 10.6.8 due to battery life and Final Cut Pro X issues. On my Early 2011 MBP, it was around 4 - 5 hrs on Lion (I believe it was on 10.7.3), but when I downgraded to SL, it can hit 6 - 7 easily. I also noticed charging times were much faster on SL.

I can get the right amount of life doing really light stuff like browsing the Internet and typing a document. Anything else and the estimated time goes down a lot.

I have a MacBook air (2011 aug model) with lion and my wd my passport 2tb won't unmount. I've tried adding partition, force unmount lsof | egrep 'name of drive' the way described on here(but I think that's for snow lep), and I downloaded disk warrior but it still says it can't unmount because another application is using it. I'm sure it's corrupted somewhere in it but if I could just get it to unmount I believe disk warrior can rebuild it. I have been able to erase it so I don't need any files off of it. Is there a different force unmount procedure to use with lion that could help me? I also get an error message sometimes that says (-50).

When pressing the "Compose Mail Message" in Apple's Mail, how can you stop the resulting popup window from "jumping" round ?

Every time you compose a new message, the window popups in anywhere on the screen... it does not remain sticky.... this bugs the hell out of me.

I constantly need to move it as needed.

I gather as the community would say "There's an app for that" :apple:

cool things when for instance if iTunes is in full screen, and you exit, then re-lanch... the desktop slides away to launch iTunes in Full screen..

Took some picks.

Also, sometimes worked with Mail on closing from full Screen, the desktop slides back into view. Pity, this doesn't happen all the time though.. :(

There is No universal way across any app, to "keep" Full screen.

Its not only Apple's app, but Third-Party apps too like Mozilla.

Mail does not re-enter full screen, as you still see the Dock,,, Firefox is the same.. While Apple's own apps like Safari "forget" this.

The only one that does work, for the most part, is iTunes, and iPhoti

Its tearing my hair out........ Why can't Apple just do one consistent universal approach to this across built into the OS ....... Dunno, weather this will be in Mountain Lion, but it would be great to have this as an update to 10.7,4

As, the very first thing i do, is enter full screen in any app..... and its a pin to do, when i have to do this.

Also,, in System Preferences, the ability to hide icons.. For example, MobileMe is no use nowadays, just go to View >> Customize, then check/uncheck whatever icons in System Preferences you don't want to show. When your done, go back to view to de-select Customize.
