Yes. A bigger heavier device can contain a bigger heavier battery to power a hotter processor chip with more GHz/cores/bandwidth/etc., as well as a bigger fan to keep it from overheating, all other things being similar. What else is new?
I would not be surprised, however, if many typical user tasks which are disk bound actually run as fast or faster on a stock Air than a stock Pro.
Tests geared to activating all four cores of the new chip. Has no relation to real world use. I bet they failed to point out that when you light up all four cores the MBP heats up like a gas grill too.
I bought one of the new MBP with Core i5 processor...you know what...I'm much happier after buying the 13" MBA because of the responsiveness and overall much smaller footprint. So you can throw all the specs out there that ya want, but to me, the Air "feels" much faster.
