Here's is an idea make a flap for the dock connector port

A small flap that moved aside when inserting a cable would solve the problem with dust in the port. I am actually surprised the dock connector doesn't have this.

Because that wouldn't be apples style. There are 3 party caps that do cover it.

It would probably eventually wear out and quit working anyway. Just buy an aftermarket plug.

A flap is just something to break and a plug will always get lost. Apple will never do that. Maybe when they add a slide out keyboard.... 😱

I remember when they first introduced the dock connector with the 3rd Gen iPod and the iPods came with an insert for the dock connector when you weren't using it.

Those were the days.

Have you ever had the flap break on a 3.5" disk drive?

I like the OP's idea, and I think a metal flap on the inside that goes up when you push it in would be perfect.

And also take up space. There's no way it's being added.

Until dirt gets up in there and prevents it from opening. The only real way to do it would be to cover from the outside, and that would stink. Maybe a plug you can put in there; a DockPlug.

I had a Samsung phone that had one for the power port. Broke about two months after I bought it, never cared. Buy a paperclip every 3 months, it's not that hard and looks much better.
