I hate it when authors try to make something seem bigger than it is through the use of exaggerations and false comparisons.

Seems accurate to me. I don't interact with strangers when I'm listening to my music, or the radio.

"There are now 22m iPod owners in the United States"
As much as I would wish this was true...
At last count it was a little over 10 million (that was about a month ago). And that was worldwide.

Yes, well you don't want facts to get in the way of your story I guess. When you think exactly the same things could be said about Walkmans which have been around ages and sold in great numbers, it just shows how far the Sunday Times has sunk these days.

I don't know if this guy is serious. Ok, I might seem a little distant when using my iPod, but the comparisment to pod people (although nice pun :D) isn't very nice... and I'm not walking around greeting strangers when not wearing the iPod, it's not the 1880's, after all... :p
Wonder if he isn't counting all flash and harddrive based music players when he claims there is 22M iPods in USA... iPod has become the generic term for many people...

I've been ignoring British journalists on the street for a whole lot longer than the iPod has been available... :p

Reading through the article all I could think through the entire thing was:
ONE OF US...ONE OF US...ONE OF US...ONE OF US...ONE OF US
I despise trendy which is why I don't flash my iPod around and is why I don't wear the iPod earbuds. Trendy is for the soulless. Trendy is for those who don't have a sense of who they are or who they want to be. Trendy is *shrugs* I just like marching to my own beat. It’s the whole think different thing. Amazing that now to think different you probably shouldn’t go with the iPod. Them times they are a changing. The reason I got an iPod wasn't because of its status. ITs because, at the time, it had the largest hard drive, one of the best interfaces, supported iTunes, supports AAC, has a LARGE variety of accessories. The status symbol thing was probably dead last on my list just after "came with real printed instructions".
Beyond the whole feel of the article about the iPod I do agree with people tuning out the world. Its one thing to listen to music in the car or on a train but for the love of god do people really need to do it 24/7 I was at the mall and some idiot was ordering food at the food court and didn’t bother to take out the earbuds while he was ordering. I think music playback is going to start to be just as despised as cellphones in short order. When you are out and about here’s a though. Pay attention to what is going on around you.

Well considering the nature of the article I wouldn't be surprised. It isn't so much about the iPod as people's listening habits and that can encompass more then just the iPod.

I feel embarrassed to wear my white earbuds when I see total nerds (you know the kind, wears nerd clothes, walks and looks very nerdy) wearing them as well. It's almost like they are trying to be cool. Then I think about myself, and I feel disgusted. 2 years ago it was chic, now it's so commonplace I feel totally disturbed. I no longer wear my white earbuds.

I've actually never worn the white earbuds. Can't stand those in-ears-headphones. First thing I did when opening the box my iPod mini came in was to throw those into a drawer, and they've stayed there ever since. I only use my Koss SportaPros, I've actually worn them out and they will be replaced with a set of Koss PortaPros (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore/?productLearnMore=T4688) I got for my birthday, very soon...
...of course when I started using the mini, a year ago, iPods were still relativly rare her in Bergen (number of users have exploded since), and when I recognized others using them and smiled to them (was really proud of my new 'baby') they must have thougth I was a real looney with my Koss headphones and the mini well out of sight down in one of my pockets... :o :D

Er. Even though it's on the London Sunday Times, its author Andrew Sullivan is an all-around American. And yes, iPod is synonimous in the media for "mp3 player". That's how far-fetching it's become.
