So one of the selling points of the smart cover is that it helps keep your screen clean. Unfortunately, I have noticed distinct lines on the ipad screen that correspond to the vertical 1/4" sections between padded panes of the cover. They are easily wiped off with a microfiber cloth, but it's kind of a pain.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Yep, definitely a pain. They're especially noticeable when I take the covered iPad out of my bag.

I saw this same thing reported by several users at the Apple forums

Yes. Since the cover has to bend, there are parts that don't touch the screen. At least it is mostly clean?

The old cover did the same thing. Once it gets worn in the lines will stop appearing.

The new cover doesn't clean the screen. That's marketing hype. The lines appear because that's where there are creases in the cover. The old cover made lines where it was creased too, and the line became less pronounced as the cover broke in. Expect the same effect with the new one.

And? I saw them on mine and so did many others back when iPad 1 came out.

Don't get angry. I just want to know what everyone is talking about. I understand where the lines are on the new case but can't find any dust line on the old case. Unless you mean the edge.

Try using the search function on the forum. The lines from the old case were discussed here last year.

SmartCover is known as the StupidCover to me. Complete gimmick, offers only minor screen protection. The only good feature is the auto unlock ability, which most 3rd party cases will have before long.

It's called dust. It has been a plague on mankind for thousands of years ...
Seriously people, this is what we're making threads about

The smart cover is awesome. It gives the iPad exactly what it needed: a one hand grip. No, it doesn't protect the back, but many of us don't really obsess over scratches on the back of the unit.

I tested out the "one hand grip" method people are talking about and it isn't anything special. I can one hand grip the iPad without it just fine.

I've learned many years ago that expensive gadgets will never retain it's perfect condition unless you are completely anal about it or cover up the device - to which I ask, what is the point?
Resell value? I thought that too, but unless you are completely incapable of treating a device like an average user, resell shouldn't be that much of a problem.

The fact that you don't personally find it useful doesn't mean that others don't find it useful too.
