My dead pixel policy is this... if I don't notice it, it's not a problem. If I DO notice it, then it's a HUGE problem. Fortunately, none of my current displays (4 LCDs on desktop PCs and notebooks, one plasma TV) have any bad pixels, but I've had a few monitors in the past that did.

Back in 2000, CDW very kindly allowed me to exchange a new Sony SDM-N50PS display I bought from them that had a single dead pixel. The replacement is still humming along fine, with no problems at all. And my Runco TV developed a dead pixel when it was about 2 months old; Runco exchanged the ENTIRE SET when they heard about the problem from my dealer, and that plasma TV is still working perfectly (knocking on wood here!). These are examples of GOOD pixel policies; that whole "6 or 10 pixels must be dead" crap is just that... crap. To me, brand new = everything works perfectly.

I bought a 20 inch Apple Cinema Display a year ago, and when I fired it up I noticed one screen blemish, one pixel stuck on green toward the left edge of the screen. At the time I was aggrivated after spending $1200 some odd dollars on something I expected to be perfect. Over time I learned to live with it and it doesn't bother me anymore, but I agree with a zero dead pixel policy although I also understand that it would drive up costs. I plan to purchase a 30 inch Apple Cinema Display within the next few months, and if theres dead or stuck pixels on it, I will make a big deal of it after spending $3000 on it.

Hmm.. I guess the easiest way to make sure you don't get initial bad pixels is to order from apple.com, and return and order again, until you get a good one.

Of course, it won't help you at all if you get a bad pixel after a couple of months..

Well, at least in the States, there's a hefty restocking fee if you've opened the package.

Of course, it won't help you at all if you get a bad pixel after a couple of months..The main issue isn't pixels going bad over time... no one can reasonably respect things to work perfectly forever. The issue is that displays are not working 100% right out of the box... THAT'S what people are pissed about.

The best way to ensure no dead pixels is, IMHO, to buy from a retail store that will let you unbox the display right there in the store and test it before you buy it. Or, you could buy from a company that guarantees no dead pixels (e.g., Samsung) or from a company whose displays tend to have a very good record WRT not having any bad pixels (e.g., Sony). It also helps to buy from a good vendor that has a good return policy (e.g., CDW).

since you mention samsung: aren't the apple panels made by samsung? and wasn't steve saying "our competitors buy the panels we reject"?

I think I quote him if i ever get a dead pixel on an apple display (waiting for my new 12" PB...)

well...

well...I have no idea who makes Apple's LCDs. But if Steve Jobs is on record as saying that, that's definitely a great club with which to bonk the guys at the Apple Store on the head when you take back an LCD with a blown pixel.

my friend has one dead pixel on his 23in Cinema Display (older model) towards the bottom of it... I didnt notice it until he pointed it out.

I dont have any dead pixels on my 15in PB, but I had a 'scare' at one time, where it looked like there was a dead pixal on my screen (the screen faded to black after a game, and there was 1 little white dot on the right side)... fortunately, it was just 'stuck', and I gave it a little rub and it went back to normal. I've ran multiple dead pixel tests on my sceen... so far so good on my end http://forums.macrumors.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

Stuck pixels are much more obvious than dead pixels IMHO. When I bought my Power Mac G5 a year ago I got a 20" Cinema with a stuck green pixel in the top right quarter of the screen. It stuck out like a sore thumb even though it was just one in a million.

I took it back (to Best Buy) and tried a second. It had a stuck red pixel and several dead pixels in the middle of the screen. Today I'm looking at my 22" Viewsonic P225fb which is about as good as it gets for a CRT. Someday I want to get a 23" - of maybe even a 30" Apple Cinema display, but I'll probably hang with this Viewsonic until they release the Power Mac Cell  my next system (hopefully) which will surely need the best LCD money can buy!

I have a green pixel in the lower middle of my laptop screen. I tend to laugh it off...

Five Apple flat panels in my family (iMac G4 and four laptop screens)... and ONE dead pixel between them.

Well Dead pixels can be common for any LCD screens. That being said the size of Sony's new PSP there shouldn't be any. It is acceptable to have them with my Mac 23" or maybe a 19" the larger the screen the more common they can be. I bought the PSP today and the first two units I had many, lucky for me I bought the extended Warr with the unit which covers any dead pixels. Ironically what is thought to be a dead pixels with some of these units is actually Dust that is inside the screen. An easy way to detect this is to turn the unit on and off and look at the screen and if the unit is off and you still see a spec on the inside of the screen it is most likely dust and not a dead pixel. The worst kind to have is one that is actually stuck on which and be annoying. Personally if you're buying the PSP I would have them open it up while your buying it and tell them you want one that doesnt have and or ones that might be in the far corners of the screen. Accepting anyting defective regards of what the excuse is not in anyones best interest especially the consumer.

Cooknn: I have a Mac 23" and I have one slightly dead pixelvery top of the screen and for a screen this big it is exceptable, but for Sony to say that about such a tiny screen is laughable.

according to the german c't magazine the panel in the 20" is made by LG-Phillips but i guess they use a few different suppliers for different models
