That is what I call a fancy ergonomic keyboard. It almost dwarfs the PowerBook. I can't tell from the picture, but is it wireless? ;)

yea, it's wireless, it's part of the MX Duo set that i used with my old PC (whose monitor is now plugged into my PB) the MX700 is sitting in the charging base behind the PB. without the proper driver,s it's a bit jumpy, so i just kept on using my Intelliexplorer 4.0 mouse.

With a 15 and a 12, wouldn't you be "happier" with a 17"?

less money than 2 computers...

but w/e - its still cool to have 2 PBs!

Hutt, the 15 inch I use everywhere and all the time, the twelve inch folds or comes with me on those rare trips to the never neverland (no, not michael jackson's molestation station).

What the heck, that must qualify as biggest screen on this forum :D - what's the resolution though?

My own setup, hmmm, haven't got an extra screen or anything. Well, a harddisk from LaCie - I basically carry my PB with me wherever I go. Almost feels weird to be away from it a whole day, hehe...

Hmm, I think you may have seen something in my photo that isn't there, sorry for the poor lighting. On my desk there is a set of JBL Creatures like Vster has, and then off to the right of my desk is my roommates stereo (which he never uses, go figure).

Most schools consider student-admininstrated WAPs to be a security problem.

I tend to agree with that sentiment.

I guess its a security thing.... They say it screws up the network. I don't the IT people are dumb. I don't know if it matters, but we have this thing called Perigo (for windoze only)and its software for pc that you download from the network and sign in using your ID/password, it scans your computer for virus and make sure u have the latest MS updates. Half the time it doesn't work and u can't go online, but i'm smart and have a mac so i don't have to deal with this perfigo non-sence
If i knew why we can't have wireless i would tell you.... But when i'm home, i sit on the cough in the Homer simpson postion and browse the net :p

well, i guess our situation is different then. When i was in the dorms we were responsible for providing our own highspeed network, so i guess it didn't matter. The school only provided dialup. I guess since we had to supply our own highspeed service, we could have wireless all we wanted to...

i like it. the short presses on notebook keyboards are really comfy to type on. doesn't take much energy and travel to trigger a key. the PB keyboard, especially is very sturdy, no flexing at all. it's the best keyboard on a notebook i've tried so far, or perhaps on any KB. i like to type on my PB's keyboard more than i do on my MX Duo Keyboard on my old PC. :)

they technically dont allow and will confiscate any wireless routers in my dorm too... but i have a netgear wireless router/4-pt switch and an airport express hooked up to my tv/surround system, and they even had inspections and didnt care. all you have to do is turn down the power to like 50%, just enough for your room. in airport express, it's done through the airport admin utility

just got the dell lcd today, 20.1 inch widescreen :)

I didn't know you could off-set the two screen so that one is lower then the other and still have all the open application windows line up. You have the powerbook screen lower, but the safari page shows up on both screen as even across. I thought they could only be setup to be lined up at the edges, either on top or on the sides and that would make the page come out in the middle of the Dell screen.

yep, took a little fiddling in the displays pane of system prefs to line it up right, but its pretty easy. i've got the pbook sitting on top of a cd spindle top, and it actually works pretty well, looks reasonably good, increases surface area for the pbook bottom to disperse heat, and best of all, it didnt cost me anything. I'm going to boost it up with something to line it up better, i think it'll look better.

yeah, the plan was that i know i have a usb keyboard floating around my house somewhere, and i was to find it, and use it. but, i havent gotten around to looking yet, so for right now, i'm just looking slightly to the left when typing to see the screen. bit of a silly set up truth be told, but, apparently it hasnt bugged me enough to spend some time to go find the keyboard. :) i'm sure it'll get to me eventually, though.

I just added that second monitor tonight, it's from my old PC I scrapped... need to figure out how to use them together effectively....

ya .. i'm getting a powerbook for next september and scrapping (sorta) my G4 tower, i'm keeping for the scanner since the scanner is SCSI and i'm not about buy a USB one ...

anyway -- i can't really see the point in having two monitors when working on a paper

well unless i've got a document open on one screen, and a net article in the other

i'm more interested in using it for Final Cut Pro -- have one screen open with the viewer, canvas and browser on the bottom and the have the second monitor used for the Timeline.

I can't wait -- i'm sure it'll look nice with this Lacie monitor <-- i love this thing

I just noticed this question -- sorry for overlooking it before. If I hadn't mentioned before, it's a Logitech MX900.

It's a great mouse, really. It's got a different feel to it than I'm used to, but I think that's the difference between Windows and OS X for me.

For day-to-day tasks, it works brilliantly. I've used it in iLife '04 and '05, iWork, FCE HD, Photoshop, and dozens of other day-to-day apps (iChat, etc) and had no problems.

I thought about the MX1000 mouse for a while, but the idea of having a cradle or dongle sticking out of my Powerbook, just to use a mouse, really bugged me. I can take the MX900 w/ me on the road and don't need any extra adapters or connectors.

The cradle has two connections (data and power) on it. I plug the data cable into my PC and the power cable into an AC outlet (on my UPS, actually). I can use the "Connect" button on the cradle to match the mouse to my PC when I need it (which is rare these days) and I can match it back to the Powerbook in a few seconds using the Bluetooth setup app.

When the PC is off, I can still use the cradle for charging (since it gets power from AC), which is really nice. I can grab my Powerbook and carry it to class or to work with me, then it automagically reconnects to the mouse and keyboard when I drop it back onto the iCurve and boot it up.

It's great. I had my reservations at first, but I've been really happy with it.

So many people have Dual screens here, must be nice

If you can get a second screen for your PowerBook, definately go for it. I have found that you become more productive with two screens. It's like having two Mac's in one.

On the lighter side, I watch TV (eye tv 400) with one monitor and surf on the other. Makes a great experience - you can be on the net and never miss an episode of your top show.

See, being Mac users, we were born to multitask - Tv on one screen, net on the other, beer in left hand, mouse in right etc..... :p

I'm really happy with my iCurve, but in the UK they're a bit on the expensive side (I got mine in the states). I'd say it's very stable, but I guess "small knock" is relative, so I don't know if it meets your needs. Also, I've got a 12" PB on it, so I don't know about the larger ones. There's no place to route a power cord, but since that sticks out the side of your laptop anyway, I don't think that's a problem.

Where's the monitor for the dell tower?

hahah that's not a dell tower that's part of my speaker system, it's the big ass sub. but anyways i've got a random dell flat panel on the other side of my room i haven't decided what i'm going to do with it. maybe get a mac mini? i don't know. but paying $1,000 for a 20inch flat panel isn't justifiable, rather get the dell 24inch much more worth it.

As cool as this would be, you can tell it is fake if you look closely. The reflection on the very front of the bottem of the keyboard is brown like the desk which it is nowhere near which would mean it was extended in photoshop. Also the wood to the right of the computer has been played with a bit as the grain does not match.

Would be pretty neat to try that.

Thanks :) The thing on the keyboard is one of those nifty iSkin keyboard protectors. I've been getting very nervous about the keyboard getting gunk under it since I regularly eat around my computer while I'm working...so I got that. It works great - you just start up the Powerbook while it's connected to the display, and once it's booted up, you close the lid and everything runs through the monitor.

I've only had this setup for a couple days. The processor does seem to get a little overworked if you're using a lot of programs that require it (Evocam, for instance, really seems to make my Powerbook angry if I run it for too long), so I'm looking at solutions to raise it in the air a little bit to get more airflow underneath.

But, otherwise I'd say there are no problems. I love having the combination of portability mixed with a desktop feel. It'll tide me over until I can afford to buy a Power Mac. :)

Just close it and plug the monitor in. It should then wake up with the external monitor as your display.

The Powerbook is designed so that it can be run closed. (the main vents are at the sides and back of the machine)

There is only one thing I would recommend for getting air around the laptop, iCurve from Griffin. I have two of them (my 17" laptop and the wife's 12" PB too) and cannot recommend them highly enough. It would also allow you to have a bit more screen real estate with the ACD too.

Well, ultimately I'd love to have a desktop because the internals are faster and would be better for photo editing/multitasking/gaming (if I were to ever buy a Mac game, which I haven't) AND have the Powerbook for portability. But, this works great for now. :)

We have the same system in place at my school and i am wireless. Luckily im on a Mac as well and don't have to worry about it too. Id say if anything they frown upon it unless their IT Department is on the ball and actually searching the network for potential security breaches.

What about a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?

neut is correct. With the "Allow BT devices to wake up PB" box checked, the bluetooth keyboard brings the PB back from sleep just fine. I haven't tried waking the PB up by just moving the mouse.

To use it with an external display and the Apple wireless kb and mouse, I just close the lid, attach the DVI cable and tap the keyboard. It wakes up and automatically adjusts the resolution for the external display, in my case to 1680x1050 on the Dell FPW2005 up from the 1024x768 on the 12" PB.

Added bonus: when the PB goes to sleep, it automatically shuts down both wireless keyboard and mouse to save battery life. No need to flip'em over to slide the switches to Off.

I'm always afraid that if I get one, I'd forget to take the PB off the stand before leaving to go somewhere and come home to the nightmare of my PB on the floor, dead

Thankfully, they have little rubber tracks on the arms that stop the PB's from falling off. The hardest part is getting the 12" lined up correctly on the iCurve as the thing is only the exact same width. They even give you little rubber bits to stop things falling off the end but we never needed to use them.

We are still in the nomad stages of life too; I have hauled mine from USA -> Aruba -> Australia. Now, I have looked at all the computer kit I have accrued over the last 2 years of buying Apple stuff and we decided its time to do a clean out sale. Keyboards, mice, software, Lacie disk, memory, Airport Express, iSights, etc. is all having to go up on eBay soon as we are getting the urge to get those suitcases packed for another adventure. Storage space for all my stuff is getting to be expensive. :(

Where do you buy those type of stands? I have an iBook that I got for Christmas and for my 16th birthday I'm getting a ram upgrade to 1GB, wireless mouse and keyboard, and a display that looks like an Apple Display.. but like $600 cheaper. I was thinking of putting my ibook in my desk drawer and running all the cables in there, but for some reason that little apple has a spot in my heart and I want to leave it on my desk now with one of those stands. I plan on cleaning off my desk completely (cluttered with stuff now) putting the iBook on the top right corner have my DVD burner to my left and have my USB hub to the right along with the display, mouse, and keyboard in the middle.

My G4 QuickSilver fit in there perfectly, but if it were bumped at all, it would slide off. It had those rounded handle bottoms you know. So, rather than risk my computer falling out, I just bought a few stackable drawers to fill the space and put my computer on the floor. I never even tried putting my G5 in there.

Hmmm... Looks great but it's actually illegal to have radioactive stickers used inappropriately. Be wary of your local environmental authorities - they are quite strict on the usage of such warning labels.

Probably the nicest PowerBook setup i'll ever see...

Shame I'm selling it!Wow, very nice setup. I am envious. If I was near your location, then I would certainly bid, but alas I am not. :(

Hmmm... Looks great but it's actually illegal to have radioactive stickers used inappropriately. Be wary of your local environmental authorities - they are quite strict on the usage of such warning labels.

I've done a search on the legislation on Radioactive labeling in the UK and it seems we don't have any laws regarding this. I'll be careful if I ever head state side though. And I doubt I'll take it on a plane like this!

Interesting setup - Sleepy Hallow quality to that Mac, but that pic does make me want to get out some windex.

I keep DVD-R or CD-R disks which did not complete the proper burning to use them as coaster. As it gets dirtier, I use another defective DVD-R or CD-R disk. I have old Symantec CD's which will be serving me as a coaster when I ran out of those CDs.

I use aol cd's as coasters. :) Anytime I ever see one in a store, I take one.

Another example showing that Mac's never die. I will have to remember to do this to my PowerBook when the screen eventually dies - in a few years I hope;)

Here's mine in my new space. I'm so happy to have more space on my desk. :) Not the best desk in the world, but since the guy that was to make my custom desk lagged I had to do something. Not bad for the price.
