Welcome to the MacRumors Folding Team, carbonmotion. Very excited to have you aboard. What CPU's do you bring to the farm? Maybe now we can reclaim and keep our #20 spot. ;)

I just started folding yesterday for the MR team. :)
I am almost done with my first packet. :)
I have a iMac G5 with 1.25Gb of Ram. :D
When it is folding it sounds like an R/C plane is trapped in my Mac. :(

Wow, my 1.25 GHz PB has been folding for a long time and is fairly quiet (Navy did say that I'd lost some hearing).

The iMac G5s are known to be loud. :(

They don't have to be, we heard a lot of peoples Imacs don't make any more sound then sitting idle. It's just like the original dual 2.0 Ghz G5's, the heatsensors where not put in correctly, or to close to a component.

Can you elaborate more on this? My fans run a bit louder than idle on my dual 2ghz, but idle level fans would be a big improvement...

search in the hardware section for noisy G5's, at the end of 2003. This was especially with the first generation dual 2.0 G5's. It was especially with the heatsensors near the harddisk which gave the most noise. The sensors where to close to the harddrive, so, when the harddrive gets hot/have a lot of activity, the sensors give the message that its hotter then standard operating temperature. Then the fans speed up. When the sensors are too close to the harddrive (or any other heat producing thing in there) it doesn't senses the right temperature and giving false information to the OS which regulates the fans. I think this is also the case with the new iMacs. Some make a lot of noise when folding or doing something intensive, others are as quiet as normal. People have returned their G5 in the past to have this repaired. Luckily I don't have this problem with my dual 1.8.

With only Firefox open their is a whine from the fans, is that normal? :(

Pretty soon you'll get to see your name on the user's milestone list of the Extreme Overclocking stats page. It's always fun to watch the rapid early progress.

I'm no expert, I have a silent dual 1.8 :D This is what I have read here on the forums. But mine is with folding 24/7, procs set to maximum, you don't hear any difference from idle. It also depends how warm the room is where you fold in, where you have set your G5 (mine is under the desk, so don't hear it), and to what you are used to (I use 8 hours per day a pc @ work and that is quiet! But the one of the guy who sits next to my is loud as h*ll!)
