why AT&T assign a wireless ph# for my Ipad2?

I am getting my Ipad2 from AT&T . They send me email telling me how to set up my ipad2 and also assigned me a ph#. Is this for the face time? I thought I could use email addresses to contact people on face time.

The number is a data only number that is used to authenticate the iPad onto the GSM cell towers. It is not used for FaceTime. If the number is called or texted, they will be rejected as it is a data only line.
