I usually connect at 49333 or 50667 kbps, and I got decent video (7-10 fps?) watching MWNY this past July, although the sound occasionally stopped and I had to rebuffer.

when I watched MWNY on QuicktimeTV (streaming) I couldn't get in at the start of the keynote! I have a 512 kbps cable in Switzerland I still couldn't get it! After about an hour I managed to get in (whew!)... But a little after that the stream skipped...and I lost the sound twice...

I hope the case is better this time... ;)

with so much hype lets hope they mean that all the developers have just one more sleepless night before they finally shipping some thing great...if we aren't sleeping because of their hype then they better not have been sleeping since macworld NY. ;-) I know Steve won't let us all down...only the people who want a worthless iWalk pda.

Maybe this is where SpyMac has been getting their info...

If we found this... there must be a picture of the new iMac somewhere on those akamai servers! Doesn't anyone here work at akamai?

Akamai just mirrors content for high-traffic sites, they are not really "separate" web servers.

just because there is the text picture up there dosne't mean there is a new imac.

1. apple is smart wouldn't put an image of the new imac tell realease

2. it would be hard to find the image

i just say no way there is an new imac image up there

At last the hysteria seems to be going away.

We couldnt really sustain that level of hype, I guess.

I am hoping for a PDA that has a big HD and wireless, Newton handwriting, and most of the 'old' Newton stuff (which is actually still more than current)

You may wish for what you will.

Some of us will be disappointed, some of us will be happy.

It reminds me of Christmas when I was a kid in the '50's - Yes, thats right the last century!

Better be good or Santa Steve wont bring your PDA.....

(I hope it isnt called iWalk. I hope they call it Dylan or Kanchenjunga or Alpha 4623, or Neeskens, anything but iWalk.)

Yeah right. Everyone has a reliable source at Apple. I've heard that before.
Yeah the iWalk prob is fake, but I don't think that means they're frauds. The only FRAUD Mac Rumor site is MOSR.COM!! They ask for donations to register for their member only mailing list, but once you pay you never recieve anything and they never write back to your email!! Trust me, hundreds of people have fell victim to this SCAM. Dont GIVE ANY MONEY TO MACOSRUMORS.COM. I am in contact with Paypal trying to get them to not do business with them anymore.

I don't think I've ever hit reload so many times in my life. I dodn't even know why I'm hitting reload, whatever it says will make no difference to my life...

I should write a perl script that keeps downloading the source and as soon as it changes, I can come back and have a look. In the meantime I can do something useful with my life... like watch TV or something :)

Come to think of it, writing that script is a sure way to make the slogan change. The slogan is guaranteed to change just as I finnish!

Androo - Happy to hear you're going to become a mac user soon :) One thing, though - I have to disagree that WinXP and Win2K are "rock solid"... I'm running a PC with WinXP on it and I've eXPerienced a lot more crashes than compared to Mac OS X. It's a lot better than 9x in terms of stability and efficiency but XP's like you've got bill gates watching over your shoulder with their rather invasive spyware... You buy an OS, so you don't eXPect ads for microsoft in it... Oh well, you'll have a mac soon...

If any Apple folks are reading this (which I do assume they are) ... I am a lowly PC user who has been attracted recently to the Mac world ... not because I dislike PCs and Windows, because I don't, but because I miss the joy of using computers and I hope Apple could provide that for me.

Please know that your marketing IS working and that you've improved the company so much in the past two years that even I of all people am attracted. I hate to admit it.

Apple Web Team: "Hey, look, if we keep switching the slogan back and forth, the posting rate at Macrumors shoots through the roof!"

Actually, I haven't seen anybody mention what I take to be the significance of "just one more sleepless night," namely that Steve has a history of pulling all-nighters the night before a Macworld keynote.

Thanx. PCs have their strong points ... they're cheap, they have power, a good deal of the technology placed in Macs comes from PC industry momentum and development. PCs are where you go if you're a gamer, where you go if you want loads of softare, where you go if you really want to dive in and learn the ins and outs of computing. PC hardware is just great.

Windows also has its strong points (if you ignore the entire 9x series of utter crap). W2K and XP are rock solid, the interface is comfortable for the experienced user and newbie alike. No OS in the world has been keyboarded like Windows ... I can do EVERYTHING without my mouse. Whatever you may have heard or seen can hardly outweigh why I think Windows is great (though I do believe Microsoft is too 'hey, let's take over that market!' nowadays).

My problem with Windows is that there's no joy in it. It's all substance and no style. It does everything well but nothing pretty. It's the dandylion in the garden, it's meant to survive and nothing more.

Though I have little experience with MacOSX ... it's a BSD with a decent interface, my holy grail of sort. Its only in its infancy and already has Apple shown that within a few months it can improve drastically. Just think of what it will become in two years. I've never owned a Mac, but I can't wait.

I pulled this one out of my ass:

Dear Mac Users,

We here at Slymac.com respectfully resent recent comments about the authenticity of our iWalk footage. I mean, come on folks. That thing is so real it's not even funny. Well, the screen does jiggle a bit. And *maybe* there's a problem with the video... But it's real! Honest. Yah, we even have an inside source from this guy named Jobs. Steve Jobs. Except his name's not really Steve Jobs. Actually, it's more like Steve Wong.

Well, we'll see come opening day who's right or not. Don't come crawling back to us when we prove all ye unfaithful wong.

Oh, and we also have the uncensored gay porn video of Bill Gates doing Steve Balmer. "Oh you big boy! Who's your daddy!" Ever notice how he walks sort of funny?
For real! You'll need to register $100 first though.

Get it quick before we claim we got a cease an desist order from Apple!

Yours resentfully,

Why don't we just calm down and think about what kind of
"revolutionary" products actually make sense for Apple.

1) Flat-panel iMac:

Of course. Almost cliche.

2) 802.11a Wireless LAN:

Remember Apple was the first to adopt 802.11b (AirPort)?
802.11a is 5-10 times faster and less prone to interference.
It can enable all sorts of home entertainment applications,
and make your Mac a true "digital hub". Your Mac will play
music/DVD/HDTV on your stereo/TV. Or even better, multiple
"terminals" can share your dual-processor PowerMac through
wireless connections, and freely move about your home.

Microsoft is trying to do the same thing (eHome) with
802.11b - typical MS lack of technical leadership.

3) Alliance with Sony:

Microsoft entered the game console market with its Xbox,
and they won't stop there. It's logical for Sony to team
up with Apple. PlayStation2 can be part of Apple's version
of eHome. Sony can also develop more iDevice with Apple.

It may even happen that Apple will license the x86
version of OS X exclusively to Sony. This way Apple can
broaden its reach while guaranteeing that OS X won't be
associated with any dumb PC box, because Sony is also good
at designing cool products.

4) Voice/handwriting recognition:

Microsoft's monopoly is essentially the monopoly on user
interface, as well as applications. There is a downside of
this monopoly, howerver. It has to make sure any new
version of their OS is backward compatible, otherwise they
risk losing customers.

On the other hand, Apple has a small, yet very loyal, user
base. It can afford to have a revolutionary new OS, such
as OS X which is not exactly backward compatible.

A paradigm-shifting new user interface, such as voice or
handwriting, will shake the status quo of the OS market.
This will definitely benefit Apple, at the expense of MS.
Even if Apple can't do it this year, they should do it as
soon as possible.

5) 2GHz G5 and/or G4

This actually depends on Motorola, not Apple. Given the
recent, and perpetual, turmoil at Motorola SPS, I don't
have high hopes. I will be glad to be proven wrong, though.

If I were Steve Jobs, I won't bet my business on any single
provider. Porting OS X to x86 platform is probably a good
backup plan. Or maybe IBM has something.

To Spearhead:

"1) Flat-panel iMac:"

I agree - will it detach and actually be a tablet is the question - most tablet PC marketing touts it as the "evolution" of the laptop.

"2) 802.11a Wireless LAN:"

Actually the installed base of 802.11b is so huge and the chip costs to x.11a so much higher most people are happy with the cheaper x.11b - not much a sound business choice there - sure Apple gets to say they were first but it's not like when AirPort moved into a vaccuum.

"3) Alliance with Sony:"

Remember Sony is the gorilla here. They lead in the game console industry and have spent millions on keeping that lead with the PlayStation 3. They don't need Apple for that.

And the game console industry already has M$, Nintendo and Sony. Apple is going to take one those three??? Not likely.
We are not talking high-end MP3 player, game consoles go on price and number of games available. Nothing Apple does is cheap.

Don't get me wrong you get what you pay for but as a business model, selling the most expensive game console in this economy is not insanely great.

Lastly, I don't think we will ever see OSX on an intel platform with Apple blessings, it will be the deathknell for Apple Hardware and Software Development

"4) Voice/handwriting recognition:"

This is a holy grail for so many companies yet speech input is available to both Mac and Windows users now. How many use it? Sure it sucks on both so no one uses it but then what do we use computers for now any way? Word processing - if you are my secretary maybe or a kid doing a report (for my kids it's about 1/2 of 1% of their time on-line or computing) - so is voice really needed - not enough for me to go out and spend $1000s. Handwriting? - not on something I can't hold in my hand.
As a user I need two things to free me from the chain's of Microsoft - I need an Apple replacement for Exchange Server - not just email, calendering, tasks, contacts - the whole group ware thing. And I don't want to hire an IT staff to run SendMail, OpenLDAP, et al to get it. One easy interface the Apple way. And I need it with me anywhere, anytime. I have AirPorts at my home and office and I have broadband connections at both. Now I need Apple to give me solutions to use those. A hand held is crucial - different sizes, 3x5 card metaphor for messaging and lists and 6x10 for reading, writing and annotating.

"5) 2GHz G5 and/or G4"

Sorry Motorola just can't deliver on this.

UbiComp - check out HP's http://www.cooltown.com

A real vision is for Apple which started the PERSONAL computer revolution is to lead us into the UBIQUITOUS computer revolution. Once again, Xerox PARC started it, can Apple deliver it to the rest of us?

Ok so the above post reflects what I need and think from and about Apple COMPUTERS - what about Apple Inc.,

I would love to have a box to put into my home theatre -
just as the iPod represents the best in personal audio -
I'd love to see Apple Home Devices address personal video -
DTR a la TiVo are hot just as MP3 players are -
wired and wireless home numbers are rising -
DV camcorders are everywhere as are DVD players -

So merge them all, a box that:

1. Plays and rips DVDs to QuickTime 6
2. Plays and rips CDs
3. Inputs home camcorder footage via FireWire
4. Stream it or at least the directory of it over an Ethernet, Airport or FireWire connection to
5. Control it from an Mac desktop, laptop or HANDHELD
6. Play it all through optical audio or progressive scan HD video home surround sound systems

That would be pretty revolutionary.

Ok people. this is going to be the year of the apple. bill gates has
offically been invited to ***** his pants.

This is the year ever stationary machine is over the ghz barrior. we will
see the flat panel imac we will see a new device most likely the
camcorder to go with imovie.

then we will see the powermac g5. oh and by the way the imac will drop in
price to a base off 799 upto 999. then g5 will start at 1999 and a middle
of the road g4 machine will fill in from 1099 to 1699.

the g4 will be something like the cube not very expandable. the g3 imacs
will be 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 the g4 will be 1.2,1.3,1.4 and the ultimate
droolmachine of 2002 will be the g5 at 1.2, 1.4,1.6, 1.8 (all in ghz)

It is even more obvious now. The ALT tag is now "Just one more ......"

Apple is making some sort of addictive knock out drug.

It's all there. "Just one more sleepless night" points directly at the fact that we will be sleeping at night. We will be sleeping because we all will be taking Apple's new iSleep drug. "Just one more...." is the battle cry of an addict who needs their fix. Their fix of iSleep that is.

Let look at some of the previous messages and relate them to iSleep now.

"Go where no PC has..." - You haven't ingested a pc have you?

"...Lust factor 10" - If you were addicted, you would be lusting.

"Beyond the rumor sites.." - I don't think that I have heard this one before.

"Backstage pass..." - Rock and Roll lifestyle....drugs.

"This one's big.." - They are getting into pharmacuticals. That is pretty big.

I'd like to see my grand-mother hook that unit up. She can barely figure out her answering machine, but ask her for her famous cookie recipe and she heads strait for her iMac.

The day she came home from a computer class for seniors and asked me "Why would I click 'Start' to shutdown?" I gave her my old Blueberry. She quit the class the next day.

As had been said so many times, the Mac OS is about making power blend with simplicity.

I don't think she will ever need the merged device your dreaming of. I'm sure we would all buy it but we are what a couple of thousand people.

Get DETAILS on the nenw stuff that the rumor sites live for. I am always intrigued that people still hope for a Newton-like PDA. Steve Jobs himself has said that Apple will not get into that business. The PDA business is waining with both Palm and Handspring cutting prices which means less profit for them. Both companies are having financial troubles because of this situation. No PDA, No way.

There were famous comments from Sir Jobs a while back regarding the difference between computers and TVs.

Something like: jobs on televisions becoming computers (and vice-versa); "we switch on to use a computer and switch off to watch TV, the combining of the two will never happen".

Okay, I'm paraphrasing, but like his PDA comments, do we think he's being consistent or about to eat his own words?

Or is a digital hub not really a computer anyhow.

I'll say this much about the old alt tag, the one that said "For the web designers" or something to that extent. The fact is, the only people who can really help prepare for and setup the keynote are the people who know what the big secret is. Guess what? there's only about 100-200 of them. Most probably aren't even at the show. This leaves very few people to work, and as a result they're pulling all nighters. A guy I know as been sleeping at the center the past few nights and tonight will most likely pull an all nighter. Whatever it is (he's only dropped very minor, more tortuos clues to me thus far), it's big. Really big.
I'll leave with one point of advice: Pick up a copy of TIME magazine tomorrow morning ASAP (the new issue, obviously). You don't think Apple employees are the only "in the know," do you?

I'm thinking creatively here - Gates lives outside Seattle, right? If there weren't other movie references, it wouldn't make sense, but because of the others, it makes sense to me that the "Sleepless" word could be a punch at Gates.

I have to admit that the photo of Time layout for next week shown at MacMinute does look pretty real. It would seem to be a scan of a quick B&W print or photocopy of a layout design, something that would have been in preperation Thursday & Friday at Time in NYC.

Looks interesting, and the caption writing style is true to form for Time...

The redirect from timecanada back to time.com reeks of Apple having a big flap and telling Time, respectfully, to put the cat back into the bag.

The cover looks very authentic, and macminute are not in the spymac arena of spouting nonsense. It is possible they have been duped, the name of the graphic is 020106timecover.jpg which is a bit odd, seeing as the macminute article talks of it being the 14th January cover.

Odd shape too, where do the discs go in. Or are we looking at the much rumored return of the Cube in half-Sphere form.
