Im sure someone here has an old g4 laying around.. but I never even thought of this.. just i was wondering.. ive been wanting to switch for a long, long time, but am going to wait for the next pb revision after the summer.. I have a p4 2.4 ghz custom built computer in a sweet case, neon light, 120gb hd, geforce 4 mx440 video card, cd burner, 512mb of i think crucial ram, and running windows xp home.. if anyone is thinking about trading for a g4 that i could upgrade, let me know. Also want it running osx

the powermac wouldnt have to have impressive specs, i would upgrade it.. just the processor is important.. i would like something over 1 ghz, minimum ram id upgrade that, id put in a dvd burner, i would upgrade the hard drive, and id upgrade the videocard, id even buy all the software, so if anyone has it i think theyd be gettin a steal...

You should consider trying ebay, i don't think you will get much for it here. I hate to state the obvious but this is a mac forum

i know you said you arent interested in ebay but that really is the best marketplace. you could definitely sell the pc and get the $499 needed to grab a 1.25ghz G4 Mac Mini and in the end probably get a better mac vs. what you'd get in a trade here on Macrumors. plus trades are always kinda risky or maybe i'm just paranoid but i always invision: "i sent you mine, why didn't you send me yours?"

The Mac Mini is definitely something you should consider. Selling your PC on eBay should definitely fetch $500 maybe even $600. With that, if you're looking for expandability, you could easily get a used PowerMac G4 off eBay. It looks like most 1+ GHz G4 PowerMacs go for $675+ but that's fully loaded. You could maybe find one without some hardware cheaper. I think that'd be your best bet.

But why would I want to trade my Powerbook G4 (or any other Mac) for a winblows PC (no matter how tricked out)?

Lots of mac people have gaming PCs, or need a machine for some sort of Windows specific task (AutoCAD, .NET development, etc).

Sorry can't help the OP, but I second the idea of selling it on eba and buying a Mini!

i guess selling it could be a viable option, and people do need pcs for software that wont run on a mac.. would anyone be able to buy it for over $500? I rather not pay all the ebay fees and everything and not go through the hassle..

I rather not pay all the ebay fees and everything and not go through the hassle..You should check out Ebay and see what they are going for.I have my alienware on Ebay at the moment. A new Mini is nice but a old G4 powermac can be taken a lot higher then Mini can go. As owner of both thats my observation. I may be selling my quicksilver/crt if they give imac a decent GPU.I would sell the PC for what you can and then go buy the most Mac for that money.

i bought this computer from abs, its pretty much custom.. I have more stuff in it than i posted, but i want to keep that stuff.. How much do you think i can get for this computer? The case is similar to the old alienware one.. with a window and neon light.. So if anyones interested in buying or trading, id be happy.

if i was going to trade for a g5 powermac with 512 mb of ram 1.8 ghz dual with bt and airport extreme.. how much do you think i should give ontop of the trade?? i was thinking around 1000... because if i bought that system new it would cost about 1900 with my educational discount, and the person that has the powermac, also used the edu discount.. And then if my system is like 600, and then drop the price a little bit because it is used, so thats where i get around 1000 from.. anyone agree?? I feel its fair..

You should post your PC at http://www.craigslist.org. Go to the New York section and post it under computers. Craigslist is free, no fees, most of the people are legit and it is local so you don't have to deal with shipping.

You're probably going to end up giving a little closer to $1200 if you go through with the trade, but I would agree that $1000 is a good place to start negotiating. What's strange about Apples is that even though a better-spec'd mini is $500, G4 towers are still going for almost $1000, with the duals running even higher. Because PCs, like new cars, lose value pretty much immediately (cursed commodity markets), it might be a better investment for you personally to put that $1100-1200 toward a basic iMac and keep your PC.

If upgradability is your concern, you should probably know that even PowerMacs don't really go that far. It's not a PC, and its only real upgradeable advantage over the iMac is the GPU for consumer tasks. The RAM and to some extent the hard drive are both upgradeable in the iMac, and there is reason to believe that the whole midplane is upgradeable (including the CPU and GPU), should better iMac G5s come along. I'm a very active upgrader on my PCs, but the Macs that I've had in the past (and will soon have again) go much longer without upgrade/replacement, and also hold their value very well (in part because of the long life versus PC counterparts).

This is all a very longwinded way of saying that you should evaluate your needs and maybe get a mini, an iMac, or even an iBook for the 1000-1200 you'll be spending on that G5 tower trade--and be able to have both computers.

those upgrades are fine for me.. im not a very heavy user, just a little photoshop, and once in a blue moon some video editing, besides that just internet.. but i download a lot of stuff, so i need to upgrade the hd pretty easily, and i like to upgrade the ram. So i think i will start negotiating at 1000.

An external firewire hard drive would be just as effective for that, and likely preferable (scratch disk). I'm not trying to dissuade you, just trying to be helpful and point out all possibilities :).

Coupled with either an iMac or a mini, it'd work out well for you, and if you format it so that it is Windows-compatible, you can even move it from PC to Mac to get faster than network transfer speeds.
