Comment: Conor Oberst's quintessential classic. His energy and charisma exude in this landmark song from his frist albume Lifted... He is often anointed as our generation's next great folk singer.

I absolutely love this song, although I don't really much like Bright Eyes' other music a whole lot, there is something about this song that is just wonderful.

1. not his first album. technically his fourth. (1. Collection, 2. Letting off the Happiness, 3. Fevors and Mirrors, 4. Lifted...and so on...)
2. absolutely wonderful song. i love it. he truely is one of the best singer/songwriters of all time in my book.

Definitely one of the songs off of Lifted that was a preview of where his sound is going. This is obvious when listening to I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. In my eyes, Conor is on the same level as Bob Dylan as a songwriter. He's simple the best of our time.

 Really?
I like Conor just as much as the next guy but have never thought he was all that great. Maybe I'm not paying full attention. Do you have a few songs that you think best represents his writing?

I really need to listen to this guy...
But without hearing him, my vote for the best singer/songwriter recently is Elliott Smith. But I have a feeling that even after I listen to Bright Eyes, he will not compare to Elliott.

That and Smith has been dead for a year or two now. ;)

It's been almost 3 years... but I don't really think that matters.

Just a great song, and surprisingly positive lyrics from Conor ;)

Conor is good...but the bumpy car ride voice he sometimes uses has got to go.

his voice has gotten progressively better. Digital Ash in a Digital Urn and I'm Wide Awake It's Morning are much smoother. but i also think that he just sings and doesn't care too much what he sounds like. he wants to convey emotion and relate to others, which i think is part of his unique quality.

It's the words that matter for Conor, not his voice.
"I could've been a famous singer/if I had someone else's voice/but failure's always sounded better/let's **** it up boys/make some noise."
As for the question of his best-written songs, my Bright Eyes songs have gotten dusty, so I'll get back to you.
Here's a few of the best (off of the top of my head):
"No Lies, Just Love" from Oh, Holy Fools.
"Let's Not **** Ourselves (To Love And To Be Loved)" from LIFTED.
"Happy Birthday To Me (Feb. 15)" from 3 New Hit Songs From Bright Eyes.
And both of the Bright Eyes songs from One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels and his cover of the Neva Dinova song "Spring Cleaning" are brilliant.
More to come.
Daniel.

No one mentioned "Lover I Don't Have to Love," which is Conor at his best.
I saw him live a few times. He performs progressively more intoxicated with each tour. ;)
