Copy video from a friend's home DVD?

Is it possible to rip video and audio from a friend's home movie DVD and then edit out parts I don't want in iMovie or FCE? It's a DVD+R.

As far as I know you can only copy the dvd (if it has no CSS/Macrvision)
I've tried to import a home made DVD(using iMovie/iDVD with no CSS or Macrovision) with no success so I can only suggest you use a third party DVD ripper or an analogue to digital (visa versa) converter(don't worry about the analogue bit) it works for me.

No idea what FCE is 😕
