I can't seem to find any reasonably priced 1.0 gz / 12" powerbook anywhere.

By reasonable I mean priced around $1000 (MAYBE 1100 depending on upgrades).

I mean if you're a student (like me) you can buy a ...

NEW 12" / 1.5 gz @ 333 fsb / 512 megs of ram / Combo / 60 gig hdd at 5400 rpm / AE / 64 Megs of VRam / Blue Tooth 2.0+EDR / new trackpad

... for $1399. And thats with newest software like iLife 05, and 1 year warranty!!!

My jaw drops when people want $1200 to 1300 on a system that although still good, is completely outpaced* in every area by BRAND NEW powerbooks which are so competitively priced.

*

ok, I just sold an 867 MHZ sdrive'd one for $1100, the resale market works on the non edu price, if you want an edu price goto apple, because think about it, a seller has no advantage to give you any kind of discount based on a different price set you get from apple. If you ever decide to sell the machine, are you going to sell it $200 less than the market because you paid $200 less, I don't know but I HIGHLY suspect you will not.

I agree but I also think what he is saying is that is how much he wants to spend (1000-1100) depending on the upgrades, and then he is telling us to keep in mind what he can get for 1300 or so.

Kwyjibo,

I see your point. On the other hand, the normal price is still only $1499.

With the comparison listed above, $1000 - 1100 still seems totally reasonable for a machine thats 500 mhz slower, 66 mhz slower fsb, slower and smaller hard drive, half the video ram, older bluetooth, and is 1 to 1.5 years old ... when you get the new one for $1499 (or 1399 with edu disc).

I am not trying to throw a fit - just making an observation. Or is it just me?

a couple hundred more bucks ($1299) could get you one of the refurb 1.33GHz/ 256MB/ 60GB/ SuperDrive/ AP Extreme Card's from apple.com
and that gives you a new warranty.

as far as the prices you are wanting... its a sticky subject, but you have to realize YOU are comparing that price to whats currently available, where as the SELLERs are comparing the price to what THEY paid at the time. Powerbook specs have changed alot since the 1ghz, AND the prices on new PB's have come down as well.
256mb, 40gb, and no airport was standard on the 1ghz models. This makes the resell market very tricky, and if you aren't happy with the prices in the resell market... then tough cookies because there are people out there paying those prices and they are the ones controlling the price points really.

Apple computers have the best resell value of any brand name computer. And the advantage to buying used is you can sell it used a year later and get most of your money back, this is why the prices are higher than you think they should be.

Life sucks and then you die, but the Refurb at Apple.com is a good deal ;)
