I know it's ok to record TV shows using Tivo or another DVR. What's the legality of downloading those recorded shows from others, using bittorrent or P2P client, for personal viewing? I ask because I have a couple shows I really like that I've missed this year. I'd like to catch up.

Also, is there a site with "independent" movies that offers free downloads. I say independent loosely as in small budget, movies that film enthusiasts or such may have made.

But yeah, http://archive.org/ is your friend.

I know that the daily show has posted links to torrent sites to download their past shows.

I don't know if that answers your question at all.

Just out of curiosity is the show you need to catch up on, 24?

I just started watching Alias from the start of season 4. Well my first Alias experience was the episode about Ice 5. I enjoyed it so much and loved the production values that I started watching the rest in sort of a reverse chronological order. Ah well. I just finished downloading season 3 and maybe I'll buy seasons 1 and 2 just to catch up on the storylines. I'll have to find out why Arven Sloan is so hated by the crew.

Being able to download past episodes of TV shows is a great way for networks to reach a broader audience and gain a loyal fanbase.

Yes, 24 is one of the main shows I'm talking about. I've missed every episode of 24 this year. I wish someone had streaming 24, hehe, that would be great.

Sorry gents, discussion of copyright issues is OK, but discussing the process of piracy or individual shows/sites/apps is not going to fly here.

For the record, it is actually illegal to record shows off-air in many countries, and only allowable in the States under a reasonably unfocused "fair-use" law.

Downloading is illegal in all cases as the info on the server is one copy offered for others to copy.

It doesn't get chased as much as P2P filesharing, but it's the same thing.
