The Rasterbator (http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/) was posted here quite some time ago, and is a pretty nifty (web)application. So, let's see your Rasterbations, if you don't have any, then get busy!

I don't know why, but I'd never actually printed one up until tonight. Now I have, and I wanna see what you lot have done :D

Didn't turn out to be so succesful. I still have my rasterbated '52 on the wall, though :)

I have no idea, just something I happened upon ;) :p

Anyway, this isn't about *that*. Just wanted to give the old "let's see what you've rasterbated" another go, curious to see others. What images they've chosen, where they've put them, how large etc.

It's always difficult to admit to yourself that you're a moron, but this is one of those cases.

I decided that I would go ahead and rasterbate an image of my family (whoever came up with that term has a sense of humor), and it's not going so well. I made it big (in terms of pages) but then I couldn't view it all at once.

So I made it a single page. Here's what it looks like:

http://www.mremw.com/MR_Images/Family.jpg

Yikes!

If I zoom out on it, you can start to see what it's supposed to look like:

http://www.mremw.com/MR_Images/Zoomed.jpg

So my question is - what am I doing wrong?

The idea of the rasterbator is that you print out all the pages and piece them back together so that you can use a small image to make an enormous display. For instance, I have a small screen cap of Darth Vader that is now on my bedroom wall 6 feet wide! I'll post a pic in a bit.

Use more pages and the smallest possible max dot size (7mm, I think). That'll do the trick!

Use more pages and the smallest possible max dot size (7mm, I think). That'll do the trick!I realize the idea behind printing out a lot of pages and getting a wall-sized posted. That I've done.

I just didn't post my question very well. I assumed e had made his image only one page to upload for us to see, vs. taking a picture of many pages put together. Perhaps I am mistaken, and the only way to get a reasonable image like what e posted (aside from using Keira, of course) is to photograph the complete printout once you've hung it up.

Edit: Nevermind, in taking a closer look, I can see Keira's pinned to a bulletin board.

This is a raster of the immortal Buckethead. I cut and mounted each page onto blackboard, then cut them again so I would have nice tiles to mount on the wall.

My, you're just not a happy camper, are you? :(

I like the color. Definitely brings out the glowing eyes. :p

Oh, and since hardly anyone read my thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=112963) on the topic, this is a perfect example. I know some of you use Firefox!

Does this flash drive your firefox crazy, or do I have a setting issue? Whenever I scroll the window or even move stuff around, half the flash app fails to update, and big pieces of it go blank. Then I have to mouse around in the dark to find one of the toggle buttons that includes a refresh. I see this failure to buffer on a lot of Flash, only in Firefox. Is there a fix?

No need to appologize, or leave for that matter, I'm a sucker for cross-thread links myself, but there are rules about staying on topic, and this thread is started by one of the newest members of the mod squad... ;) (I'm sorry if that one's been used before :D)... and, so, to stay on topic:

Nice rasterbation... :)

By the way, the word rasterbation reminds somewhat strangly familiar... I just don't seem able to get a hold of it... :p

I'm going to try this on some photos. Do they have to be very high quality?

Will an 3x5 work ok?

decksnap
Mar 3, 2005, 05:18 PM
No- they don't have to be high quality- in fact, I think they have to be under 1 Mb. The one I posted was actually a fairly tiny web image. If you're doing many pages, they standard dot size should be fine, but if you're doing one that's only like 4 or 8 pages you'll want to decrease the dot size.

Does this flash drive your firefox crazy, or do I have a setting issue?I have serious issues with Flash on my Firefox.

If you click on any movie, all content disappears until you mouseover/click/do something that makes an element move (or, if an element is moving of it's own accord). Then that element becomes visible, but the rest of the page stays black.. makes watching H*R a tad difficult at times. not found a fix, though I've not looked

Flash is evil anyway.

Unfortunately all the magic occurs inside the flash application on their site. The good news is it's not an 'applet' so to speak-it's flash. Make sure you have the latest version of flash player installed on your browser, and it should work. I do it with Safari- If it still doesn't appear to work and you're sure you have the latest player, there is a button on the site you can click if you know you're up to date but the flash doesn't load automatically.

(Probably something to do with a bad flash detection scheme on their end)

Grand Admiral Thrawn (http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/grandadmiralthrawn/index.html) (I use the full name, though without the 's).

Do not read the full story about him if you plan to read the Thrawn triology, starting with Heir to the Empire (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553296124/ref=lpr_g_3/002-4593476-5280066?v=glance&s=books) (highly recommended).

Actually, I'd replace the person in this image with the person in the previous image:

Hey Scem0, I had that massive Bjork one on my wall when I was about 17. It was a massive fly poster (about 6' x 4') that I nicked off a wall in Southend* just after it had been pasted up. It was so heavy because of all the other posters stuck to the back and I woke up one night to a ominous creaking noise and woke up to see Bjork's giant face bearing down on me....

I'm resurrecting this because I've just moved into a new house and my room was looking bare. Didn't want to waste cash on posters, so with a new source (www.choicestationery.com) for incredibly cheap ink cartridges, rasterbating was clearly the way forward. :) For those of you with access to a Windows machine, it's actually much better to use the downloadable version (http://arje.net/rasterbator) of it - you can make the pixels much smaller than on the online version. Presumably the online version can't do this because the size of the pdf becomes huuuuuge - I did a 2mm pixel 30 page one the other night that was 115MB.

I've done three or four attempts, and currently have these two up. The first probably won't stay. (I'd also like to have one of someone different, as having both of the same woman might make me seem a bit obsessedů :))

http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33244&stc=1&d=1130083003

I didn't get the joins quite perfect on it so at various points her face looks like it's had a chunk chopped out of it. Poor thing.

Then I set the Rasterbator app's paper size to smaller than A4 (I put 200x284) to make sure all the print actually stayed on the printable regions of my page. It did, and though it was a hell of a lot of work (about three hours for printing, cutting, and taping) I think the result is pretty damn good.

Anyone else done any good ones since May?

No room on my walls, but if I remember this for my first apartment, I would do two of them. One would be the original six color Apple logo/Think Different. , and the other would be the cover from Abby road.

Just to see how it worked, I did my images, both take like 140 sheets of paper.. WOW!
