Just got an email that the WSJ iPad app trial is ending so I called up to see what the deal was. Here it is:
Free trial ends April 18 for current WSJ paper subscribers
Monthly sub $18 for iPad, BB, and online (all 3, not just one, but still more than a paper sub.)
Daily edition $.99
All purchases can be done in app
You cannot xfer your paper sub to a digital sub

So if you already pay for the paper you need to pay extra for the digital iPad version?! Are they drunk?

Maybe, but WSJ has always separated the e-side from the dead tree side. The free iPad access was just a limited trial which they were upfront with from the start, though they never stated out long the trial would last. Now we know. WSJ is one of the few, maybe only, news org that has a profitable pay wall, so they go with it.
Personally, I'm OK w/ this arrangement since you can buy a single edition for .99. Most days I read the paper version b/c it has more info. But sometimes when I travel the iPad version is the only access I have. It's not something I want a month sub too though.

No surprise, all the dead tree companies are moving to pay walls.
WSJ caters to a wealthier clientele than NYT so they'll probably be OK.

Just curious if the paper version is the same as the apps subscription.version?

I get the iPad version for $8.61 per month but they won't let me view the iPhone version without a sub. Seems tacky to me since I can't read both at once but I guess they figure that a spouse or somebody could be using your other device.
For the record, I've had the iPad version for almost a year now.

I was not going to pay but eventually gave in for a trial and am quite happy with it.
Writing is solid and interesting, imo
I enjoy both the iPad & iPhone apps

How did you get it for that price? Everywhere I see it's $3.99/week.

I don't know. I was an early adopter a year ago as soon as it came available and that's what the price was back then and all that I've paid since. :)
