View Full Version : Black marks using smart cover

Has anyone else experienced this?

I am getting two black dot like marks on the back of my iPad where the hinges of the smart cover are.

They are also on the velvety side of the cover. Not quite sure why this is happening

Anyone else noticed this?

I am having a similar problem, but with only one of the hinges. It leaves a black mark on the inside felt side of the cover when it lays up against the hinge. I'm considering stopping by the Apple Store this afternoon to show it to them and ask if it is normal. When I detach the cover from my iPad 2, I also notice that there is a black mark on my iPad. It wipes away, but almost seams like grease from the hinge. Hoping that I can find a cover with 2 good hinges that don't do this.

That's exactly it! Maybe we have faulty ones? What colour is your cover, maybe that also has something to do with it?

I had this happen with my red leather cover. After a week the hinges looked like this and had the same marks on the iPad and inside the cover.

I took it into my apple store and they swapped it right away :)

Yeah mine are starting to look like that now. Did they say what the cause was? Are you still having that problem or has a new cover solved it?

The guy said it may just been first batch problems but if I had a problem with this one they'd swap it again. It's been ok so far but I've only been using it 2 days. Fingers crossed though.

They really should have put rubber stoppers on that side too as it's where the hinges seem to rub against the iPad when the cover is folded back.

I stopped by the Apple Store on my way home and they gave me a new smart cover without any issues. The Genius said this was the first time he had seen the defect, but that definitely should not be happening. I had a green poly cover and exchanged for the same one.

I have the pink one and been using it for a week. No marks at all. I leave it on, too, and just fold it to the back.

I have this same problem. Im just not sure if it is even worth going to exchange it... It bothers me a little, but not sure if it's enough to drive all the way up there... Btw I have a gray polly cover.

Mine has that. Gray smart cover. Isn't this normal wear and tear? For Christ's sake, should that be a "trade it in for a new one" issue? Picky, picky.

It's not the spot on the hinge that bothered me. It's more the fact that I was wiping an oil spot from my iPad on a daily basis. Plus, it was staining the inside of my cover and I wasn't completely comfortable with the oil stains sitting on my screen when the cover was closed. After 3 weeks, that is not normal wear and tear in my book. You may view it as picky. I disagree.

That looks terrible (but nice nails though)! Make a Genius Bar appointment and go to your local Apple store and they should replace it.

thank you, i change them every two weeks or so.
I don't know if they replace smart covers at the genius bar.

according to others in this thread they do... worth a try.

This looks exactly like mine!

You could buy another one and then with your new receipt take your faulty one back and say that it's the 3rd one you've had or something and that you just want your money back now as you're fed up ;)

I asked someone in Regent Street about this and she hadn't heard of it but said they'd probably be able to swap it over.

I knew this would happen I posted about this as soon as i saw the smart cover on the keynote on engaget!

Basically the coating wears off the top and oxidisers turning black.

Its like rubbing silver with metal poslish on a white cloth it sends the cloth black with it.

You wont stop this effect it coated alumnium it will lose its anodised layer eventualy and oxygen in the air will atack it!

So keep on swapping it will rear its ugly head eventualy on most of them.....

Just checked mine while typing this and mines doing it lol! I wish i never brought the thing!

Just thought I'd chime in with my own experience:

Got a blue poly cover on launch day in the US and noticed this happening after a few weeks and also saw that the long bar that holds the two hinges together was strangely out of alignment (very un-Apple-like.)

Took it in to the Apple Store today in its original packaging and with my receipt ready, but the helpful employee exchanged it with no questions asked and without even really looking at it--in fact, he didn't even take it out of its box. Seriously, he took the old one, scanned the new one on his iPod Touch, gave me a receipt and the new cover, and let me walk out.

Fantastic Apple CS as always.

(Even if it is a noted defect, it was still a seamless experience, so they deserve kudos for that)

I have the same issue. I brought in my orange cover to the Apple store after about a month and was given a replacement. The new one does the same thing. I may return it for either the leather one with a black microfiber screen protector or go with an aftermarket one. I'm not fond of the SmartCover anyway as there is no comfortable way for me to hold the ipad witn the cover open. I think I was one of the few that liked the original Apple ipad 1 case design better.
