1st Gen Ipod (scroll wheel) - "folder icon with exclamation"

about a fews years back i bought an iPod(scroll wheel) from ebay. this is the original iPod. just recently i tried to turn it on but it wont power on so i plugged in the firewire charger. it turned on but did not charge and all i see is the folder icon with exclamation in it.

is there a way to restore it? can i connect it my windows 7 pc? i need a firewire adapter or a card or something? im not sure. did the hard disk just failed? what about the battery, not charging anymore?

reading into it a little more, this is the specific help page you want http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1443 . You need to install some software on your computer first, the link to which can be found on the support page.
