Pretty much all my music is 256 kbps. iTunes says I have 32.5 GB of music.
My iPhone 4 says I have 22.2 GB of Audio.
I have the "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps" selected.
Using some basic math skills, I think the size on the iPhone should be <17 GB.

How can I reduce the audio size to about 17 GB?

I guess there is some overhead or other data taking space too (e.g. album art). I converted a 11MB song with bitrate of 320Kb/s to 128Kb/s and the file size is now 5MB, so the file size decreased by 55% while the bitrate decreased by 60%.

You could try this - it would take your library to under 10gb

Ok just noticed another odd thing.
Perhaps someone can help ...
On the Capacity Display at bottom of iTunes, it says 22.2 GB.
But when I select "Music" folder under iPhone, it says 14.88GB
Where is he other almost 8 GB?

Isn't the 22GB everything on your iPhone, but the 15GB is just music? So the rest is apps, videos, data etc...?

On the Capacity bar I have :
22.2 GB Music, 0.34GB Video, 3.3GB Photos, 0.01GB Books, 0.75 Other & 0.8 GB Free
When I click the folder under the iPhone:
14.88 GB Music, 0 under Video ...

I suspect the discrepancy in Video is iPhone recorded video.

The biggest unexplained gap is in Music

Maybe you've added some podcasts and audiobooks as well? They'd show up as "music" if I'm not mistaken.

Do you have any ringtones/podcasts/audiobooks/voice recordings?

Tell iTunes not to sync any music at all and it will show you in the bar at the bottom if any audio would still be left on the device after sync. Just make sure you don't accidentally click sync while doing this and delete all your music.

Thanks for the Info.
When I disable sync for music the bar goes to 1.43GB.
22 GB with Sync enabled.

No ringtones, Podcasts yes, audiobooks yes & a couple voice recordings.
I think the "extra" is probably podcasts.

I disabled sync on podcasts & music dropped to 15.4 GB. More like what I would expect.

Thank you all! Very much appreciated!

Maybe the 128k option only take effect for music added to the phone after you selected the option ie all the previously synced music is still 256?
