How much RAM in a G4 1 GHz iMac? And other questions.

Thinking of upgrading my 17" iMac.I have installed a 512 in the bottom but have a 256 in the top. I think the limit is 1 gig total 512MBx2. Or is like the ibooks that took 1 gig chips in their user slot. I would also like to upgrade the hard drive and optical drive, any ideas? I was thinking 250 GB and a DL DVD burner.

I was planning on taking it to a local Apple specialist for the upgrades.

I don't feel like cracking that eggshell myself.

I know they'll take a gig stick to go to 1.25GB. I'm not sure if the 256 stick is soldered or removable, but you're probably better off just getting the 1GB stick.

As far as DVD and disk upgrades go: those shells are a pain to open and put back together properly, so your inclination to go to a specialist is dead-on.

The 256 can be removed, it is a regular DIMM the bottom is a SO-DIMM.

I figured if I'm going to open this baby up, I'm going for broke 2 gig RAM HD and faster burner if I can.

I've reached the limitations of 768MB!

Yes, you can go for 2 GB of RAM. 1 GB DIMM and a 1 GB SO-DIMM. You can use any ATA hard drive, not SATA. The iMac G4s do support large drives of 128 GB and up. And the burner is the same deal but it has to be short enough to fit in the dome-- some drives are too long to fit.
