I was wondering what everyone considered an essential download for their Mac? I just got a new iBook and for me personally, two things I could never live without are Firefox and the VLC Media Player.

The latter is the best option I have found for playing any video file no matter what codec was used. Even with the updated third party codecs installed, Quicktime seems to have problem with a lot of video files downloaded from places such as p2p, etc.

One thing Ive looked into is a Trillian like client, does anyone have a recommendation?

This is gonna sound sound a bit harsh, but try searching the forums. There have been quite a few thread on this topic.

Congrats on the iBook. :)

Was just about to link the same thing... one question though which came to my mind. Many are rightly recommending LittleSnitch (www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/download.html) however if not mistaken this is not Freeware. It's only a demo with a 3 day expiry ??
