Just customised mine after reading this how-to (http://www.resexcellence.com/mods_04/03-04-04.shtml) that was posted in another thread somewhere.

Mine is a simple change, didn't go OTT with it, but I think it looks cool. So let's see any you've done, or the results of what you do after reading this :D

(Leave in PDF format, makes it easy for others to use your file if they wanted to ;))

OK, well, this wasn't intended to be another Keira associated thread...but if you're gonna do it guys, at least do a good job of it :p

I still wanna see what any of you come up with on a serious level, get your thinking caps on!

Download PDF (http://upload.yo-momma.net/uploads/forums/BootPanel.pdf) (too big to attach  ) I've tried it, and it actually looks pretty slick :)

Does anyone have the old font that Apple used on the classic boot panel? The one that I used doesn't look right. It seams too thin. Maybe it's just me. The O definitely isn't right though.

This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to embed an animated GIF into a PDF file? I would think I could do it, but don't have the apps with me on this machine so can't test it.

But it could lead to a BootPanel with an animated GIF. Hmmm. I'll have to try to find this out when I can.

I've never seen one - but that doesn't mean it can't be done. However, I think the whole PDF concept revolves around something which is printable - which would rule out animated images. So my guess: can't be done. Hope I'm wrong.

I had a question too, after a lot of attempts at setting up a Login Screen, I finally figured out that it only works when the Login Options are set as: Display Login Window as Name and Password, not List of Users. Is it possible to change the screen for the List of Users option?

while i have no artistic Nor photoshop ability

i'm very surprised that there have only been about 6 of these Custom Boot Panels put on here

usually by now i'd expect a lot more- for example when we do the Desktop's of the month there are usually 8 pages by the end of the month- & every 2-3 posts is someone's image

this Thread has hardly no images- when it was made to put images up-

wonder why-
people think this is dumb?
not enough folks got into it?
just courious.

That's why I was asking about login panels. I hardly ever see my boot up panel, why would I bother messing with it.

Anyone with good login results I'd love to know the best tactic.

I was able to replace my login with my custom bootpanel (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=1310218&postcount=48) succesfully with the tutorial that was posted earlier. Only problem was that it only worked when I have the Users settings for login set to display name and password not the list of users.

If you follow that guide at Resexcellence (http://www.resexcellence.com/mods_04/03-09-04.shtml) it works fine, I didn't have any problems. The guide goes through all the steps. I just saved the pdf file as the applelogo.tif so I used the same image and followed the rest of the steps.

any ideas on how 2 do it in 10.4

im stumped cos

/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemStarter/QuartzDisplay.bundle/Resources

dont seem to exist

Something terrible has gone with customizing boot panels in 10.4... it's no longer a simple swap of PDFs, it's buried under system executables. We'll need installers and modifications of core system files now. :(
The reason for this is because Apple changed the system of the boot process. When you see your Boot Panel, it's fake. It's just there so you don't get bored while the login window starts. The progress bar is based on a percentage, the first time you boot, it writes the time it took for the login window to start in /var/db/loginwindow.boottime. It uses that to determine how slow the progress bar should go next time. This is why the progress bar seems so smooth and nice. You can even run the process /usr/libexec/WaitingForLoginWindow from the terminal, but it will not write the time it takes unless you use sudo. There is no harm in running this.
See here (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050614201205203&query=waitingforloginwindow)

Since it is now in hex, to replace it we must take the code from the pdf or image file and replace it with the right section in the executable. We must not make any offset, so the code must be exactly 18432 bytes long. This is very complicated and risky, I will not be doing it... :(
See here (http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=256300)

Hope I didn't explain this too badly...
