everybody knows that lambo doesn't really make very good cars. they ridiculous, with wings and things sprouting every which way, but handling is horrible and they're all around crappy. not ferrari on the other hand....

You're joking, right?

Right?

I drove that Diablo for about 15 miles and my impressions were that of an extremely well planted car. The handling was very much not horrible.

'Specially now that Audi own them, they can make decently build cars now, or so you think.

I'm about to get my first car in about 2 weeks time, an MG F:

I'm still on the lookout for one- they're quite cheap at the moment and they drive very nicely.

Should be a fun little car. A word of advice: some of the older (first gen models) are notoriously unreliable. I think if I were in the market for a small sports car my first choice would be a Mazda MX-5 (Miata for the Americans). Its widely regarded as the best car in its class.

Please post some pics once you've purchased!

Your front wheels look a little dirty... brake dust :p

I hate brake dust, its such a pain to clean off. I detailed my car yesterday, I will post pics later.

I did some off-roading today and here are a few pics. I went with two of my friends so those are the other people. Additionally, I got my "centre" (:)) locking differential working and I used my 4wd low for the first time. Using the CDL and the 4wd low made for amazing power and I never lost traction. It was amazing and my friends were impressed.

I don't want to start an argument, just voicing my opinion:

My god, that's an ugly car.

How could a car that can go 200 mph have bad handling? I'm sure it handles better than 99% of the cars on the road.

I will admit it not the most beautiful car on the road, but it is an acquired taste.

Hahaha thats the only response I can use. But i must say Land Rovers are pretty unique in their styling aside from that ghastly Freelander that looked like a ford escape or something (my mom called it the Freeloader).

Oh I hate the MK1 Freelander! MK2 looks nicer, like a baby Range Rover:) Still, if I wanted a 4X4, I'd get a Hilux. 19K for the top model is great!

It's all about relativity. The Diablo may handle better than 99% of the cars on the road, but Ferraris make the Diablo feel unstable on a track. But this isn't from experience. :P I just watch a lot of Top Gear and take their word for it as they drive supercars all the time. They say it all the time. Lamborghini for the rich (pricks) who just want to look good. Ferrari for those who want a car that really performs.

They aren't biased. Most american cars are crap when it comes to all around performance. Jeremy Clarkson bought a brand new Ford GT. How is that biased? And they gave the current gen corvette a pretty good review. They favor the aston martin because they are British and the mini coopers are great cars. They handle like they are on rails.

Ferrari and Lamborghini don't really compete. In other words, Ferrari doesn't make a V12 mid-engine car at that price point any more and haven't for quite a while. Also, Ferrari doesn't make any all wheel drive cars, and all Lambos are AWD these days.

Regardless, I would guess a huge majority of Ferraris and Lamborghinis never see a track.

The Gallardo is a V10. The F430 is a V8. Both are very close in price.

Scenario time:

There are 2 filthy rich guys looking to buy a car. One guy is a true car enthusiast who enjoys taking a car to the track on weekends. The other just wants a really cool supercar. They are both deciding between the Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari F430. Both cars are in a similar price range. The Lamborghinis has the larger motor and more power. Who buys what?

The enthusiast will buy the F430 and the other guy will most likely go for the Gallardo. But who am I to talk? My car is less than 40k. :p

They pan the Z06's suspension for being firm while Ferrari's and Lambo's have a similar ride probably( I never rode in one, so I can't really say). Plus, you don't find it odd whenever a comparison involves a British car, it some how wins? Top Gear is nothing, but entertainment. I wouldn't really take their reviews seriously. Except for the stig part. :p

EXACTLY. he has got this superiority thing about him. He thinks that because he is British, he's simply better, and that americans are pigs. He can't stand the notion that the richest super-power the world has ever seen, doesn't drink tea 10 times a day.

I don't watch top gear (they annoy me too much)... but in this case they're right. I can't speak for the Lambo, but the Z06 is a whole lot stiffer then the Ferraris I've ridden in.

The fact that we're even comparing a Corvette to a Ferrari is amazing. I wouldn't expect the corvette, which costs a third as much as the F430, to handle as well as the Ferrari and ride as well. Cost cutting has to result in compromises somewhere.

Anyway... since this is supposed to be a picture thread here's the back of my daily driver:

Then I stand corrected then. Anyway, if you want a serious review, watch Fifth Gear. Actually, thinking back to it, Fifth Gear also mentioned the Z06's stiff suspension. I only watch Top Gear because it is entertaining. Nothing more. Oh and another source of bias( or it might be plain out stupidity then bias) was when they did the dyno of the GT500. Stating it had 447 HP instead. Any car person and any credible car magazine/show knows that power at the wheels is less then the power made at the crank.

There's a lot he, and others, dislike about american stuff, but don't be fooled by his mouthing off, there's plenty he likes too. Clarkson is an arse, he knows his stuff, but he knows too, and makes his money from, that being an arse on TV is what he's good at. So good in fact that he could afford any of the supercars available, and that means he bought the GT for similar reason he bought his Ferrari and his Lambo etc., 'cause he liked them and he could afford to, easily.

...Plus, you don't find it odd whenever a comparison involves a British car, it some how wins? Top Gear is nothing, but entertainment. I wouldn't really take their reviews seriously...
Yes it is entertainment, and no it probably shouldn't be taken too seriously, but I don't think British cars always win the comparisons, I recall they were all raving about the Corvette until they used it on the highway, at which point it's flaws surfaced. Of course the Corvette wasn't engineer to use British roads like an Aston or Porsche are so of course it'll lose. Same cars tested by a US tester in California might show a different preference, I don't think I'll ever buy a car based on what someone else thought of it.

Ditched the old BMW a few weeks ago and bought this; I'm loving it. Honda's made some impressive strides in driving dynamics recently, and I don't really miss my BMW (I especially don't miss all the warning lights and high repair bills).

I took these pictures at a relative's house (my camera's busted), and the lighting's a little weird through the trees.

Well, I come back from vacation only to find out that the ignition of my car is broken. Twice before the key would not turn inside of the lock cylinder in the ignition, and eventually with some finagling it would work. Well, apparently my parents decided to use my car, they went somewhere, couldn't get it started, and now its messed up every like 10 times you use the key.

$300-$400 for a new ignition, plus the annoyance of the new ignition not using the old key thus making the door locks and locking gas tank key holes incompatible with the ignition key.

Get your parents to pay! They're the ones that broke it! :D

They are. But even I think its stupid to pay up to $750 for a little stupid little lock that should not even break in the first place. I am buying a used one and I am installing it myself, I've read its not very difficult.

To anyone that steals cars, breaking open the ignition of a discovery 1 (1998 and earlier) is not difficult at all. Basically squeeze the top of the steering column and pull up. There you go- the ignition and all the wires leading into it. Don't attempt it on a 1999+ disco or a range rover because they have the most sophisticated alarm systems ever.

I would also like to mention they put 87 octane in my car, its supposed to use 91 or higher. I tend to put mid-grade in it since gas is now so expensive. I could definitely feel that the engine was not running as well as it usually does.

take the opprotunity to make the ignition a dummy switch. i.e., there is a harness under the dash that connect to one going to the ignition switch. It is very easy to unhook it, get another harness for <$50 that would normally go to the ignition switch, and run it instead to a $ 5 push-button switch which you can install out of site under the dash. Much cheaper, safer, and pretty neat.

I was considering that. just a switch for power and a button for the starter. Probably would cost like $10 total haha.

Believe me though, I don't think the installation of a new one will be very hard.
1) Unclip top of steering column.
2) Open up bottom 1/2 of dash (very easy)
3) Unscrew buttom part of steering column (2 screws)
4) Remove 2 shear bolts
5) Remove two small screws
6) Unplug wires

Anyone know the significance of 4 turn signals on the back of the car alone?

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/ErikCT060/IMG_1098.jpg

I've noticed off-road vehicles such as Hummers, Monteros, and Troopers have turn and/or brake lights on their bumpers too.

Tail lights in the bumper, because the rear tailgate mounted spare restricts the angle of vision for the higher set of lights, so they put them down in the bumper. Kinda expensive afterthought to meet design rules somewhere.

I think it's simply that the theory is an off-roader is more likely to smash a lens and so this offers a redundancy.

I love how on the 1999-2002 Discovery II's they only put the turn signals on the bumper. It seems like such a vulnerable spot.

I finally took my running boards off my disco. I absolutely hate those things. They're always in the way. They're only good when you are cleaning the windshield and you can stand on them.

It was not that hard until it came to the integrated front mud flap. The running board is connected to the mudflap which has a allen bolt connecting it to the quarter panel inside the wheel well. Long story short, no allen wrench fit the bolt well (and no, it was not a torx) so I tried my hardest to get it off but its nut was so corroded on it would not come off, even with multiple sprays of WD-40. I ended up having my dad saw off the bolt, which did the trick. Tomorrow I am going to have to do the same thing on the opposite side... I can't wait.

I'll post pics tomorrow.

Edit: Forgot to mention I broke a socket wrench in the process of removing one of them

Let's keep it on topic please. Keep the chit-chat to a very minimum. Got more to say? For example, if you love Rovers and wanna make oh, 90+ (yes, some have already been deleted) posts about Rovers? Start a separate thread in an appropriate forum. :)

It's simple, really: post a photograph of your car.

Had a MASSIVE accident a few years ago at an event. Barrel rolled after clipping a kerb at 80+. We thought that was the end of it, but lots of work, new roof, panels, wings (complete with arches) and it was back in competition

It good to see that you actually get your SUV a little dirty there.

Your Toyota in America doesn't exist, but the closest thing is a Lexus GX470 which looks almost exactly like yours and I think its based on the Toyota 4Runner, which is a pretty good off road car. I think I like yours more than the 4Runner.

You are right though, anyone that would take a Land Rover off the beaten path for a long trip is kinda stupid based on their reliability. Especially all the Range Rovers, Discoveries, and LR3's with Air Suspension- if that stupid system breaks when you're out there you're stuck.

My dad used to have a mint condition beige 196x Series IIa Land Rover. He sold it to his friend for very little (less than $500) like 25 years ago. Today in mint condition it would be worth at least $10,000, the price new was like $2200. They have a Series I at the dealer in mint condition for $20,000  (its been sitting there for sale for like 2 years haha)

to clarify, I'm pretty sure the Lexus 470 is the Land Cruiser. When Toyota intropduced the Sequoia to compete with the 7-seater American SUV's, they had no room for two full-sized SUV's under the Toyota brand. The Lexus and the LC had been twins for several years through the late 90's, but the LC brand was dropped altogether when the Sequoia came out, leaving just the Lexus.

The LC is most similar to the LX not the GX... and also, Toyota DEFIANTLY still makes Land Cruisers (http://www.toyota.com/landcruiser/index.html?s_van=GM_TN_LANDCRUISER_INDEX).

To clarify the point that I was making...

Land Cruisers in Europe are not like the ones in America, though there are full size "real" Land Cruisers around called Land Cruiser "Amazons". Most are called Land Cruiser "Prados" which are available in 2 and 4 doors.

Lexus LX470 = US Full Size Land Cruiser (Amazon)

is the same as
http://www.automedia.com/NewCarBuyersGuide/photos/2006/Toyota/Land%20Cruiser/SUV/2006_Toyota_LandCruiser_ext_1.jpg

is the same as
http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/04/23/047463.1-lg.jpg

We're not even talking about the Sequoia, which is just a Tundra turned into an SUV.

And are you saying that the Land Cruiser no longer exists? Are you insane? First off, Land Cruisers are probably the most one of the most popular $60,000 luxury SUV's on the market because of their build quality, heritage, and reliability. The Sequoia is not nearly as luxurious but IMO it makes the Land Cruiser look overpriced. Additionally, check out the resale values for Land Cruisers, a 10 year old one with a 150k probably costs around $10,000, not to mention look at ones that are just a few years old. The Land Cruiser also has a too of a name strong name. Do you think the name "Range Rover" is going anywhere anytime soon? Do you think the name "iPod" is going anywhere soon. If they were going to delete the Land Cruiser they would have just named the Sequoia the "Land Crusier".

The LandCruiser Prado I drove through a pig pen doesn't have a Lexus equivalent. It is the model before that shown in ErikCLDR's pictures. To the best of my knowledge, it wasn't based on the 4Runner unless the Americans' 4Runner is different to ours. :)

Thats a beauty you have there.

To Mad Jew, all the american reviews say that Lexus GX is based on the Toyota 4Runner. I dunno if that means that the 4Runner is based off of the Prado and they don' t know that or what. The LC Prado I think is better looking than the new 4Runners.

Anyways, they probably just have the same frame and maybe gas engines and other little things. LC Prado compared to the GX470- the lexus will have standard leather, air suspension, heated seats, and all those goodies like that. In America, the only real difference between a stock LC "Amazon" and the stock Lexus LX740 is that the Lexus has air suspension and navigation and costs $10,000 more. The lexus does have more advanced options though like this silly nightvision thing.

I would never purchase any asian racing car. I'm just giving him props for not adding the HUGE muffler out the back, and the fake carbon fiber hood.

I always chuckle when a hear what I think is a lawn-mower driving down the road and I look in my rear-view mirror only to see a Civic with one of those god-awful race kits on it.

Thanks for the comments. And yes its all stock, I would smack my self, (as would my girlfriend) if my car looked like it was from "Fast and the Furious". I dont see subarus as boy racer cars although there are quite a few boy racers who drive around Miami with them. I ignore them, and all the Neon SRT-4's.

By the way WRX's are boxer engines, like porche, and they have a very distinct sound that sounds nothing like a ricer.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MkoeUrBo-ss

And I prefer an efficient four cylinder turbo to a guzzling V10 or V8, plus the AWD is the best thing in the world when it rains/snows. You have no idea what traction is until you drive an AWD car. The WRX STi goes 0-60 in less than 5 seconds too.

That exhaust sounds vile. And thats an after market exhaust so I don't think thats a very "distinct" original sound. I find it rather loud and annoying.
----

So yea, I took my brush guard off to refinish it. It was starting to rust around the welded parts so I thought I would fix it before it got bad. Some of the paint peeled off like potato chips, while other parts were on there pretty good. I found out however, heating up the area with the paint on it turned the flakey plastic like paint to a leather like sheet that can be easily scraped off and then ripped off, relatively speaking that is. I can honestly say I don't like my car without it.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/ErikCT060/IMG_1141.jpg

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e6/ErikCT060/IMG_1142.jpg

Thats with most of the paint scraped off in the center portion. Some parts are fine, but other parts are kinda badly rusted. Hopefully with some special paint I can get some more life out of this baby. A new one costs $500 and I'd rather not waste my money on that. Its a fun project, I take pride in how much I take care of this car doing a lot of the work myself.

SPT, Subaru Performance Tuning isnt aftermarket. Its a Subaru of America performance division similar to STi, Subaru Technica International in Japan. Granted its not the exact muffler that the car came with.

This one is stock, you might fancy it more. You might not think its the best sound ever, but it beats the hell outta the honda.

Efficient four cylinder? Ha..What kind of gas mileage are you averaging? the 2007 STi is rated at 19/24.

A turbo pretty much kills any efficiency a four cylinder might have ;)

Im averaging 50/50 Highway City at 25 mpg. I think that pretty damn good for a 227hp car that does 0-60 in 5.9 sec and 1/4 mile in 14.3

Plus, something about the AWD seems to say to quite a few of the younger drivers that they can be just like Initial D on the mountain highways 'round here. Definitely known quite a few folks personally who've crashed their Imprezas doing just that.

AWD creates a false sense of security, and I find it annoying that Subaru advertises it as a "safety" feature. While it can help in some situations it does not make you invincible. I run group two at Summit Point and I have seen plenty of people stuff their Evos or AWD Subies into walls thinking that their car is superior and it enhances their driving skill. I can assure you it does not make you an instant hero behind the wheel.

By the way WRX's are boxer engines, like porche, and they have a very distinct sound that sounds nothing like a ricer.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MkoeUrBo-ss

I have heard plenty of ricey sounding Subarus. Just because it is a flat four doesn't mean it is automatically not ricey.

Im averaging 50/50 Highway City at 25 mpg. I think that pretty damn good for a 227hp car that does 0-60 in 5.9 sec and 1/4 mile in 14.3

Everyone I know who has a WRX or STI complains about the horrible gas mileage. Also, your vehicle might run 0-60 in 5.9 but it falls flat on its face after that, AWD helps the launch. Have you ever noticed how low the trap speed is for the WRX? 14.3 @ 92-94mph. Many cars with less horsepower will run away from them on a straight.

Now that I have that out of the way, are you planning on doing anything to it? I think I can hear Vishnu calling your name! :)

Im a poor college student, I have about a year and a half left at University of Florida for Electrical Engineering. I can totally see me ditchin the WRX in the future for, say a Tesla Roadster.

I know it's contradictory, but Im passionate about electric cars and environmental issues, hence my major and career path. Unluckily, my car is not worth very much $ (it has 62k miles, but a new engine, loooong story) so i can't sell it and get a more efficient, equally nice car.

ricey :P thats a good word.

Cars I like however include the Mini S as well as the GTI

I'll take an SRT/10 anyday however. :P

It's the sedan. The coupe has a much different front and rear design then the sedans. The coupe's design is tipped towards the E46's design. While the sedan doesn't resemble the E46 that much.

1979 Datsun Pickup. Purchased this baby for $300 including a 12 foot auger and 50 bushel grain bin for feeding horses but I use it for corn storage for my corn stove. Sure is beautiful. While you guys spend your money on your insurance and gas and fret over the scratches and pits in the paint or the stink inside, I drive this baby without registration or insurance on the dirt roads and it smells like oil, gas and WD40. One day it will surely explode or roll over into the maw of hell, but for what I paid it sure is a fun, loud, cheap ride....

Hahah I would love to have one of those for a day. One time I saw one of those bought by a cheap taxi/limo service. I saw it up ahead and slowed down. All the cars in front of it were slamming on their brakes. I got closer and realized it was not a cop car, there were no lights in the back. I'm heading off to college this week, and I decided I'd rather put up with the frustration of a job than the frustration of a crappy car. The problem was that I had no co-signer. Most banks turned me down, until an older friend who works at a bank helped me out and talked to her boss. This banker gave me a 4-year loan, with a pretty good interest rate for having ZERO credit (I just turned 18). And so, after much looking, I got this:

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix
Metallic Silver with alloy wheels
35K Miles
3.8L 210 HP V6 3800
Spotless exterior and interior
Premium sound system
... and all the normal stuff: power doors, locks, windows, air conditioning...

Its lame...a 3.8 L can easily put out more power than that. Come on GM...put the 3.9 L in there.

Didn't American Engine design stall in the late 50's or early 60's?

Honda really are amazing at getting every last bit of power from their engines, yet they still have a fair amount of low torque.

The Wankel engine is an achievement. However, it requires forced induction to get that bhp figure and needs fairly regular maintenance.

Yeah... I know, it kinda stunned me as I was looking over the facts, too. See, I think they purposefully cripple it, to make the GT and GXP models seem even more powerful than they are....

When I heard 3.8L V6, I expected something in at least the 260HP range. Heck, my 11 year old Monte Carlo had a 3.4L V6 and 215HP.

Either way, it has a good amount of kick. Is it "fast?" Certainly not. I've been in my dad's 600 HP Camaro SS... That's fast. This is perfectly fine for me as a college student, though. I don't need to kill myself *this* soon. :p

Well it's kinda sad to think my car has a 4.0 V8 and weighs the about same as a Chevy Suburban/GMC Yukon XL yet the Suburban/Yukon XL has a 5.3, 5.7, or 6.0 liter engine depending on the year and model.

The Audi S4 has a V8 bigger than my car.

My car is geared very low so I guess that makes up for engine size when doing stuff like towing and driving off road. It also lets me drive 75mph at 3,000rpm and get horrendous gas mileage.

The XJ's and XK's are beautiful, however my old neighbor had an early 90's XJ with square headlights which made it look stupid.

The X-type wagon is stupid, but I think the sedan is decent. I would never buy a new one, but used they are a pretty good deal, and have AWD standard. If only they put the AWD option into the S-Type and maybe the XJ's.

Ahh I am envious.

I have a 1998 Disco LSE and my dad has an 03 Disco SE7. He's also owned a 1990 (I think) Range Rover Classic and a 1963ish Series IIa. He says Jaguars are his favorite sedans but says they are too flashy for him haha.

We might be looking into getting an LR3 or a used MKIII Range Rover in a little while.

I personally would love to see ford sell Volvo. Lets see, they stole the S80 frame and used it on the Ford 500/new taurus/Milon/MKZ, the edge/MKX, Flex, LR2, and probably others. They also took a lot of Volvo's safety features. Talk about sucking the S*** out of a company.

One thing that people forget is that torque is every bit as important as HP, and while that S2000 makes 240HP it makes 150lbs of torque.

To the 3800 V6 making 210 HP, GM let it rot on the vine. Here GM had an engine despite GM's reputation of making POS cars, where people would say it was bulletproof, but they let it die. Although it makes sense to kill it now due to it being a 90 degree V6 and would require a huge engine bay to fit it in. While the newer 3500 VVT V6 and 3900 VVT V6 are much smaller due to them being 60 degree V6's. But, how their killing it is unacceptable. Letting it rot on the vine without major updates. They should of updated it, but gave the notion it will be killed.

To the S2000's engine. Yes, it is impressive that it can make 237 HP from a 2 liter engine. But, the torque is a pathetic 162 lb of torque. Look where it develops the power. 237 HP at 7800 RPM( redline is 8000 RPM) and 162 lb of torque at 6800 lb of torque. So the motor itself is rather gutless in the low range, but since it is in a rather light vehicle, you can't tell since it can still move the S2000 pretty well. The people who put high value in the HP/litre talk are pretty much ricers. IMHO, it is only acceptable in Europe due to them being taxed based on the size of the engine. But, here in the US where we aren't taxed on the size of the engine, who really cares? Let's use the LS7 for example. It makes 505 HP, but requires 7 liters of displacement to do that. But, why should we worry about it being 7 liters? We don't get taxed on the displacement of it and it makes incredible HP yet gets pretty respectable fuel economy( 16/26 using the 2007 EPA tests and 15/24 on the new '08 tests in the Z06). So why really go into it being such a large displacement?

While I agree that he does come out with some idiotic ***** sometimes, there's no denying he knows his stuff. Care to mention some examples where he's come out with wrong information? I'm not talking about dumb opinion stuff, just poor info.

As for his hate for American cars, I don't think he does per se, indeed he spent a huge amount of his own money on a GT40.

You're right that torque is important, but different cars have different characters and a high power light revvy suits the S2000, whereas it wouldn't suit a Mustang which prefers a big 'lazy' V8 or whatever. Neither is the 'better' engine until you use it in situ in the car it was designed for.

Hell, I'm an American, lived here all my life and hate American cars.

Well, a good consumer would consider all of their options no matter where they're made, HQ'd, etc. So a good auto consumer would consider an American car, Japanese car, German car, etc. But, perception plays a big role in this situation. Style aside, perception is clearly on the Japanese side while against the American side while German is in the middle. Perception does not equal reality thankfully and can change. Though it will take a long time to change. So as GM, Ford, and Chrysler improve hopefully people will realize they have improved and is worthy of consideration.

When I purchase my next car, I will consider more of the competition. I bought blindly without considering the competition. I may still buy a GM product, but I would of done so thinking it was the better car for me over a Toyota or Honda, etc. Even if I buy lets say a Honda, I will still wish GM, Ford, and Chrysler well.
