Just as the title says, the eMac runs great in safe-mode but freezes immediately after boot (once everything displays on the screen(HD, dock, background image, etc.)). So far I have lightened the hard drive by deleting anything I don't need on there (music, movies, years worth of documents, etc.) and run cocktail but it still freezes when I start-up in normal mode. Unfortunately I was raised on PC and switched to Mac only a couple of years ago so I am not sure where to turn for this.

Me too, [sorry, I'm not supplying you with an answer] it's the first time I even bothered to google it, after a few years of my eMac laying around. Sounds like a common problem. Hope it's fixable! I'll search some more.

Just noticed my eMac runs fine in safe mode too.

What happens to mine normally is it will freeze, sometimes before it reaches the desktop, sometimes after it reaches it, I can do a minute or so of minimal use and it halts often on displaying something, often on the launch of an application when the icon is bouncing, sometimes menus seem to freeze as they drop down, it looks other times without interaction. yours the same?

You often get icons or menus that visually corrupt and freeze looking pixellated.

I wonder if the fact that our eMacs run fine in safe mode demonstrates whether the they suffer from the common 'bad capacitor' problem, or not?

i suggest you put this in the PPC part of the forum as more ppc experienced users will be there and not in the iMac thread.

Just inspect caps instead wondering ;) It's easy to see if they're bad.

A little help from your friend... :) (http://www.google.pl/search?hl=en&sugexp=kjrmc&cp=11&gs_id=26&xhr=t&q=emac+bad+capacitors&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1721&bih=1062&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi)

check this link out mate:

http://www.mactalk.com.au/10/72249-emac-tiger-installation-freezing-problems.html

it offers a quick fix, google how to enable root user, login as root user, go to system/library/extensions , then just move all your files whose name starts 'ATI' out of that location [stick 'em in a folder on your desktop as root user], then reboot normally.

This will stop your eMac using some graphics bits, and it works fine. I imagine all these threads about capacitors is likely the issue with ours, perhaps you can buy them, or maybe just need the whole logic board, dunno. But, frankly, unless I find something critical that it wont do without these extensions, I don't really care, it may even double the life of my eMac!!!

this fix takes about 10 minutes, thats what we like :)
