GUTTED! New iMac out and I only bought mine in March!

Just wondered if anyone could advise if Apple can change my mac?

I converted from PC to Mac and bought a "new" 27" i7 and its now already out of date!!!

Anyone got any ideas?

Purchased a mac book pro last week... think that may be going back!
 
Try, some have had luck according to some posts on this board.
But your older 2010 iMac does still work, doesn't it?
Or do you such CPU and GPU intensive stuff, that the new iMac would seriously help you?
 
Has your iMac stopped working? Does the machine seem slow in anyway? Be happy with what you have. Some people don't have the money to go out and buy top of the line Apple computers, especially when all they'll be used for is watching hulu and reading tech blogs.

I mean, I hate to troll on you, but what do you use your fancy computers for? Do you REALLY need the updated CPU and GPU?

surely you did some research and knew the new ones were due out? why didn't you wait?

You've still a great machine there...
 
The switch to intel (and new iMacs accordingly) happened maybe a month after I bought a PPC iSight iMac. I needed it right then and there though so I couldn't wait around just in case an update came. When it did, you bet I was gutted but these things happen.

The good news is, you've still got a good mac and it should still be suiting your needs. The bad news is, it's unlikely apple will upgrade you just because of the update. If you were within 2 weeks (or whatever it is) of purchase, maybe, but not now.

Try to ignore the snarkiness you're receiving in this thread. Keyboard tough guys. It's totally understandable to be annoyed that you bought something only to have an update come out shortly after. Just try to keep it in perspective. Your iMac is still totally fine, Ed Rooney. I'm sure you did not achieve this position in life by having some snot-nosed punks leave your cheese out in the wind.
 
Sell it if you feel like you want an upgrade so badly. If you buy 8/16GB RAM for cheap on the web you'll make it a bit more of a worthwhile sale to someone, end up losing only 2-300 maybe if you're patient and you should be able to upgrade. If selling things isn't your forte then I guess you're out of luck but still have a great computer so don't stress.
 
Got suckered the same way back in 2002.

Bought an iPod late in the year, was very impressed with all things Apple and this led to a rush of blood to the head and the purchase of a 17" iMac G4 at the end of December.

Lo and behold, a couple of weeks later an upgraded iMac is announced at Macworld.

Did I regret my purchase? A little. Did my machine suddenly stop working? Not at all - I was still using it until last year. Not as my primary machine, obviously!

Needless to say, I found the Macrumors Buyer's Guide soon after my late-in-cycle purchase and have never made the same mistake again!
 
I DO have a great machine and you are right, I am not really going to notice the upgrade elements...

Thunderbolt possibly if they ever release anything that connects to it!

I have spoken to the store I purchased from, played on the MBP purchase too that I got just last week (in my total conversion to Mac from Windows)... the official line is that exchange and refund for 14 days.

When there is a new product launch they extend this to 28 days.

I am to go in store and speak to a manager and they may honour the exchange.

If I dont get to exchange it wont change my opinion / love of the Mac products.. just lead me to feel that Apple suck a little bit !!!

If anyone else reading this DOES wish to change and you are within the 28 days... I would go for it !

You should of checked the buyers guide here at macrumors. Then you would of known to wait. Also you probably could of asked for advice here. You did neither, live and learn.

Thats not helping!

Do you really think IF i Had a) known about the site and b) believed the rumours I wouldve made the purchase 'blindly' ?

Hopefully, with the post of my updated situation I will help others in the same position but thatnk you for your kind words!

From apple's perspective...someone has to buy the old inventory.
 
I think Thunderbolt alone is good enough of a reason to change. Of course right now there's no devices to hook with it, but give it another year and I'm sure you'll find more devices for Thunderbolt.

You are everything that is wrong with consumers.
 
Brand new computers are out of date in a few months, no matter who you buy them from. They're still good enough for many years of use. Your "old" iMac is still ridiculously fast with a beautiful screen.

Its far from outdated. You need to get away from the Windows mentality of needing the best hardware. Your Mac will run fine for years.

HOW SO?

MOST product maufacturers advise they are launching new products, NOT leave it to rumour channels such as this forum.

I specifically discussed my needs with the 'sales expert' - how they can deny any knowledge of a new product being released is ridiculous as they have to sell the bloody product the minute its on the shop floor!

I believe I have a right to be advised if there is a new product about to hit the shelves which will enable me to make my purchase accurately.

But not even the Apple Store employees know when an update arrives, and they are not allowed to talk about rumours.
When I bought my first Mac in 2004, I bought an iBook, and just 20 days later a newer model came out. I was a bit pissed, but the slight increase in CPU speed was not really that bad for me anyway.

Apple keep their plans secret for as long as possible, they don't even tell their own stores until the last possible moment. Your 'sales expert' would not have any inside knowledge so don't get blaming them.

Your best bet for the future is to keep an eye on the rumour sites like many people have recommended. Put this one down to experience and don't worry, your iMac is still a good computer and should last for a few years.

My 24" iMac was three years old last Sunday and I've got no intentions of changing it in the near future. 🙂
