iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 (late '10) vs. 2.7GHz Quad-Core i5

Hi guys,

I haven't been able to find any benchmarks comparing the 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 from late 2010 to the new 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 — anyone know if it's a worthy upgrade, or mostly insignificant …?

I was wondering the same.

I know the RAM is much faster but wanted to know about he processors.

Using Geekbench 64-bit new i5 2.7GHz scores about 8600 while the 2009 i7 2.8GHz scores around a 9700.

Both are 512MB VRAM, however the i5 has a newer card.

The 1066MHz RAM vs 1333MHz RAM probably won't make a noticeable difference to the average user.


In our opinion, if you can snag an i7 from apples refurbished store (we saw them for less than $1400 yesterday), that would be quite a steal.

Also in response the the OP's title: the Late 2009 model is the i7 @2.8GHz. The Mid 2010 model is a 2.93 GHZ i7.

Ooops, yeah, late 2009. My bad.

So the speed improvements are mostly theoretical for my average use, but in the end I guess we all love the feeling of a brand new iMac … 😎

The CPUs bench pretty close to the same.
Late2009 - i7-860 - 5,566
Mid2010 - i7-870 - 6,101
Mid2011 - i5-2500 - 6,469 (This CPU is 3.3GHz, the iMac i5-2500S runs at 2.7GHz.)

There are no benches out for the i5-2500S in the iMac yet, which runs at 2.7GHz so the closest for right now is that i5-2500 at 3.3, when you factor in the downclock they probably bench right around the same.
