anyone who doesn't like it needs to rethink what they want.
An Ipod nano is music, pure and simple. If they want all the other bits, get a touch. If you just want music, tell me what exactly there isn't to like?
People will always find something to complain about, even if a device is perfect for its purpose. Its human nature.

I personally don't think that it's a bad product at all. I just think that it's ridiculous that it is supposed to be the successor to the 5th gen model and it launched at the same price even though it is undeniably a step back in functionality. I understand that what it loses in function it gains in portability, and many people like that, but I figure that if it does less it should cost less. The 6th gen should fall between the previous nano and the shuffle in terms of price, as it does in function. I would also like to see the next generation actually build on the 5th gen, but I think that Apple ha decided to permanently cripple the nano to encourage people to invest in a touch.

I don't particularly like it and have found it hard to use in the store when i"ve tested it, mainly because I have big fingers.
I think its just a little too small. Functions perfectly for music, but its not big enough/easy enough to use for me. I really liked the previous (5th) gen one and was hoping that the 6th Gen one would build on that again
I have a 2nd gen one that needs replacing - and I really wanted to get a new one in september but the design did nothing for me. I guess i'll have to get a new battery and hope i can fit it to my satisfcation - there's glue involved and that puts me off.
Also i don't like the idea of clipping something that expensive to the outside of my clothes/bag etc as its intended. yes i could put it in my pocket, but then why have a clip?
I for one am in the anti-6th-gen-nano camp.

The touchscreen.

It's no portable than the fantastic 5th gen nano.
The 5th gen nano was awesome (I have 3 of them, all 16 gigs, red/green/orange), as is the Classic. I had an iPod touch when they first came out, before they were so old hat like they are now in their fourth year much the same as they were in 2007, and back then it was really cool...until the novelty wore off and I got tired of taking it out of my pocket all the time to use it.
I sold it long ago thankfully, and now won't touch any iPod without a click wheel--I have a feeling I won't be buying any iPods anytime soon though.

My iPod owning days died in 2007 with the introduction of the iPhone. Previously used a 3rd gen nano and 4th gen iPod. Call me crazy but I have no need for 50 devices when they all do the same thing.

I love mine. I do a bunch of running for exercise, 5k's, and a half marathon coming up this summer and it is great to clip to your shorts and not worry about it. I have my Nike + attached to it and still can't tell it is clipped to my shorts. Got rid of my 5th Gen for this one.

Just curious, where do u clip it? Or do you keep it in your pocket?
I'm asking because whenever I run with it, I usually clip it to the end of my shirt or the flap of my pocket, and eventually it falls off.

I am really liking my Nano right now. I picked up a 32gb Touch and an 8gb Nano and have been playing with both. I have an iPad and I really feel like having an iPod Touch is really kind of pointless besides that it has 32gb (my iPad is 16gb)
The Nano does a few thing that the Touch doesn't do. Like double click power button for Next Track or Play/Pause and a cool FM radio with pause feature.
I have a Sansa Clip but I have a few docks for my iDevices so I like docking my player to listen which I can't do with my Sansa.
I'm loving it for the gym too. Been taking it everywhere I go recently, I'd actually even dig if they made a feaking phone that size that didn't do text, internet any much else besides made calls.

I'm still mixed on it...
My last Nano just wouldn't hold a charge for longer than an hour or so and it was a 4th gen "stick of gum" style. No camera but it did have it's advantages over the current Nano that I bought yesterday.
Sure I could have had my old nano sent out and gotten a new battery for it, but it was pretty banged up from various trips to the tile floor in my home and the occasional glovebox beating getting bounced around with everything else in my van.
So I bought a new 16GB nano and while it does have some advantages over my old Nano, there are some things I miss too.
I love it's small design and attention to detail but without the click wheel that I could easily work in the middle of the night is now gone. Sure the buttons on the top do similar functions, it's not as intuitive as the proven click wheel.
I got by this by using a spare iPhone 3GS headset with the handy volume controls and simple navigation with the clicking of the microphone button.
The Radio is a feature that is nice to have and the iPod Nano now being focused as a pure music device makes it a decent budget iPod (aside from buying used on craigslist or ebay).
The clip has come in quite handy as when I'm laying in bed I listen to some relaxing music to lull me to sleep. I've been often asked why I have a Nano when I have a brand new iPod Touch, but that being the issue, I have tile floors. My Touch sliding off my bed crashing to the floor would be a major dent in my wallet.
The Nano with the clip has solved that issue completely
My thoughts on the new touch interface are really mixed. It's neat, but due to the small design, comes a small screen and small controls to boot.
In the end, I can say I tolerate it, but I neither love it or hate it either.

I like mine more each day! I wish you could set a timer for the screen to shut off after 20 seconds though... seems to stay on forever. I tend to just click the sleep screen button a lot.

If all you want is music, a touch screen is awful. with the old one I could control it in my pocket, or in the car without having to look at it. With a touchscreen you cant do that, If I wanted a touchscreen I'd get an iPod touch or iPhone, they actually take advantage of the touchscreen.

I mainly use my iPod as a music player so I do not require any extra features, but the 6th gen Nano was mostly a disappointment. Yes it is small, but making the interface harder to navigate by removing the click wheel and use a one inch touch screen was a horrible idea. The other bad thing about the player is that Apple did not increase the capacity, yet they kept it at $179. That is too much just for a 16GB MP3 player.

An Ipod nano is music, pure and simple.
That's the problem: it wasn't before the 6th gen came out.
The 6th gen is a good little machine on its own, but if you compare it to the 5th gen and 4th gen (both of which I own), you start to see bits missing.
- The new version no longer plays video. Since I travel a lot, it's convenient to load some video on my Nano to watch on trains / planes / cars (when I'm not the one driving).
- No more games. Solitaire was a great little timewaster when you're sitting on the toilet.
- No camera, but admittedly I only used my camera to snap random videos when I didn't have my iPhone on me.
- While the touchscreen on the nano is far from bad, it IS fiddlier to use than the old clickwheel.
It seems that Apple really have taken 'making it smaller' to an extreme. As I've said, the new nano isn't bad at all, it's just not as good as the 5th gen.

I dig it, in fact of all the nanos I probably have gotten the most use out of this generation than any other before.
The touch screen is pretty good for how small it is, especially when its clipped on your arm, it doesn't make it a real pain to navigate like I was expecting.
Really I've only used my iPods for music anyway so all the features dropped from the 5th gen don't even bother me...though I think the pricing of this model is way off and should be at least $30 cheaper.
The classic will always be my favorite but the 6th gen is the closest as far as competing with the classic as my favorite..and I've used a lot of iPods. (iPod Shuffle 2ndGen/3rdGen/4thGen, iPod Video 5G & 5.5G, 1/2/4 gen nanos, iPod Mini with a 32GB Flashcard swap, iPod Video with a 240GB HD swap).
Then again this is coming from a guy that didn't mind the 3rd gen shuffle much either, so perhaps my tastes are different from the average consumer.

I love my 6th gen. Happily use it every day on the way to work, and also running. Ran my spring marathon with it and even once I started tossing gu out for being too heavy the nano (clipped to waist of shorts) was no problem.

Yeah... Maybe they should have called it the iPod micro or Shuffle+ since it does kind of sit between the shuffle and older iPod Nano.
I actually dig the double tap power button to skip track feature a lot now. If that feature was on the iPod touch I would have liked my touch a lot more as a music player. I ended up using it as more of a PDA/ gaming device.

I love my nano and so does my mum :D the wrist bands which turn it into a watch are really neat too!
I'm not sure why everyone is complaining that it is to small for, afterall the clue is in its name "nano" which in turns means very small :D

I am a professional DJ and the iPod Nano 6G is one of the best MP3 players on the market in my opinion for purely music. The reasoning is that if I am traveling overseas/interstate for a gig, I can transfer about 30GBS of music to the nano and select my playlists for the gig while I am on the plane. Very handy as it gives me things to do on the plane as well as save me some time.
The Nano is microscopic compared to the other gear I need to take too.

My 10 year old nephew has one and it is his pride and joy. He knows I like Apple gear and couldn't wait to show it to me.
He saved up for it and got it with his own money rather than getting it as a gift or whatever, and he absolutely loves it to bits because it does everything he wants and nothing he doesn't want.

Recently, macmall was selling them for $100 on ebay brand new...so I finally picked one up. The biggest problem was the almost year people had to deal with poor battery life because you couldn't turn the thing off. Apple took WAY too long to fix that blatant screw up.
As of today tho, I like it. Not entirely sold on the touch screen yet but its a pretty slick mp3 player for $100. I still wouldn't pay full price for one though...

I've got one and I'm well happy with it.
I used a Cowon S9 for quite a while but used to get lost navigating the menu's, it was also quite bulky to carry around.
Couldn't knock the sound though, really good.
I approached the ipod nano with some trepidation and a reluctancy to give up the Cowon but was eventually sold on the small size and the convenience of the clip on the back.
Needn't have puzzled over it though, the little touch screen is excellent, simple to navigate and fast, the clip is sturdy and the sound quality is fine through a pair of Sennheiser earbuds.
The added bonus is how well it works with my macbook (obvious, I know, but I'm relatively new to macs and apple products and always struggled with Windows media player and mp3 players, I know itunes gets a bashing sometimes but it's the only media tool I've actually got to grips with and understood)
So, yes I'm chuffed with my Nano 6G.
Oh, and I payed full price for it and don't regret it a bit.:)

What? Hold down the power button and you will see the familiar OS X spinning boot indicator. After that, the 6th gen shuts down. Reboot by holding the same large button then the Apple logo appears and it's ready to go.
On a side note, this is one of the fastest booting iPods I've used in a long time and mine is a 16 GB model. I only wish I got something different this time. A red model perhaps. Oh well, the longer I have it, the more it grows on me. :)

my only guess with this is:
the new nano is for teens/kids.
they have small hands (still), they like small device, they don't bother about ease of use and ergonomics, and most of all it's a fashionable object.
for me it's a complete mess. i just cannot think about an ipod without the scroll wheel.
FYI now i'm finally iOS free :)
i had a touch, then i had an iphone, now i'm back to a classic (5g) and a 20 bucks phone, because all the mobile thing was making me mad, anxious and bored.

I still like my Nano but I am thinking I will return it. I just installed an 8gb CF card into my old Mini last night and it is zippy fast. Being that I own a 60gb 5th gen (classic), a sansa clip and now a flash based iPod Mini It's silly for me to have the Nano... Save that 115 bucks for something a little bit more useful... Like rent.
Still sad... I really like the nano.

I eagerly awaited the 6G thinking they would keep the 5G design intact and raise the capacity from 16G to 32G. I literally had the money in my hand....
And then I saw the 6G.....wow, what a disappointment!!!
1) Ability to play movies
2) Camera
3) Click wheel (very nice in dark or while in pocket)
4) No capacity bump
What you get for "crippling"
1) Microscopic "touch screen"
2) Same price as full featured previous version
Apple is now run by businessmen who dictate to engineering and not vice versa. The trend is to compartmentalize the products and a fully functional Nano was seen as a threat to the Touch. It HAD to be taken down a notch....and was.

I think they just wanted to freshen up an old design and bring it back to a music based player... but that's my opinion.
I haven't owned a Nano since the first gen which I didn't end up keeping. I actually really dig the new one as long as you know what you're getting... the price does seem a bit steep though. I think the 16gb should go for maybe 129 while the 8gb should go for between $79-99. But isn't that what we all say about every Apple product? The base model MBA should be closer to $799, etc :P

(it helps if you put things on your Amazon wishlist :p ) Any way I knit, crochet, and spin fiber and I love to listen to my music or podcasts so the watch works out perfectly. Would work great too for people that exercise. I really enjoy it, makes it alot easier to just move around with my daily chores/hobbies and not worry about it falling off or getting in the way.

That's only half true... the double click for next track works great as a sight free control. If they'd put the same button scheme as the headset on the power button that would be the best. The problem with the classic is the slight pause before the thing starts playing due to it's HDD. It's not a horrible thing but that quarter second does seem jarring after using iPod Touch and Nano players all these years. That's why I shoved a CF into my old mini. It would be amazing if they made a flash based classic though.

My only complaint is the clip. Given i'd mostly put it in a pocket rather than clip it onto a belt or anything, the clip pretty much doubles the thickness without providing any benefit. A removable clip would be ideal.

I travel a lot and use mine when I am on airplanes for music. Why not use the phone? I do a lot of long flights and the phone is bulky; I also don't want to use the battery of the phone when I don't have to. I have a 160gb classic that I never use since I got the nano.
Only complaint is that 16 gb isn't enough for my music, even when down converting to 128kbps. Battery life seems to be fine; 12+ hrs without charging or even worrying about running low. I used to use a shuffle, but the nano is a lot better.

I agree 100% - especially your first statement. I even watched the press conference to see how the new 6G was going to look - and then I saw it. The money went back in my pocket and I am keeping my 5G a bit longer. I'm not sure I even need a Nano anymore, but I like using one for music in the car so I don't have to worry about draining my iPhone battery. 32GB would have been awesome, and the 5G style and shape was perfect. Who wants a microscopic touch screen anyway? Apple dropped the ball on this big time.

The only thing I do wish was incorporated (that would be cool) is better use of the touchscreen ( would be cool to control volume just by "spinning" your finger around). And maybe a glass screen that doubles as a giant button

Sure...AFTER the firmware was updated to 1.1...for many months when it first came out, you could not turn it off. This feature was not added until Spring of this year...well over 6 months after it was released.

I have had three previous ipods, 1st gen, 3rd gen and 1st gen Touch. 1st one developed a board problem and was unusable. I keep the 3rd gen in my car plugged in to my stereo because I got tired of replacing the battery. The Touch is long in the tooth and needs a new battery but I can't decide between replacing the battery, upgrading to a newer one, switching to an ipad or iphone (when t-mobile gets one this fall). Got the nano for travel and exercise and it just works with music without being saddled to do too much. For the moment, I get my music without having to focus on what else the device should do. The upgrade that gave it a real off switch made all the difference, before that, I always seemed to be run down when I went to use it.

I like the size and battery life, but it is less functional and harder to use than the previous versions. Especially difficult is getting it to shuffle in a playlist, move from screen to screen and just plain see the screen in sunlight. Needs work.

I hate the latest Nano and here's why. When I listen, I'm usually involved in other things that require my attention, and it's a pain to have to look at the iPod every time I want to skip a song, do a search, mess with the volume or any little thing like that. After so many years of using a click wheel, I know how to speed my way to shuffle, set it in advance to play an album I like once I tire of shuffle, and several other handy features. I can even do it while the iPod sits in my pocket. If I am listening in bed late at night, I don't want to look at the Nano in order to skip a song - which will cause my near slumber to be rudely disturbed by the screen light. If I use my iPhone, it also requires me to enter the passcode to do anything, including shut it off. And if I'm driving... well, forget it. I tried to use the iPod on my iPhone once in the car and quickly realized that was just a disaster in the making, so I went back to using the good old built-in Toyota radio.
I love my old click wheel Nano and the heavier Classic. I don't care that much about video on such a tiny screen, and the photos are just a nice bonus. What I really want is the same lovely little 4th gen 16 GB Nano I already have, but with quadruple the capacity! Then maybe I wouldn't have to settle for just my favorite songs from my music collection.

Is there really a 32GB iPod nano?
My mistake I meant 16GB, I swear when I wrote that post I thought my Nano had 32GB because I've put quite a bit of music onto it before. 16GB seems very low for the 1750 songs I can have on it at one time.

Have you heard of the headphone remote? Much easier then a click wheel. One press to pause, 2 to skip to next song, 3 to go back to last song.

Yes, I know about the headphone remote. It sounds like a reasonable solution at first, however, my headphones usually need to be replaced once a year, occasionally more. With that in mind, I don't want to be a hostage to Apple's more expensive, inferior sound quality headphones. As for driving, I listen through the car's speakers, so I would need an expensive car remote system.
The new touch screen Nano has its place, but so does the click wheel version. A lot of people love the button, and that's why the previous Shuffle (sans button) was not a big success. I hope that when Apple is ready to increase storage capacity, they bring the button back. It doesn't appear that physical size is a limiting factor anymore, so I can only assume that price is holding them back. If anyone from Apple management reads these forums - I, for one, would be willing to pay a little extra to get the previous style Nano back with added capacity, specifically 64 GB or higher.

It sounds like your issues are with with the iOS touch screen controls. Which I agree are horrible for in car use... but the Nano actually has double tap of the power button for the next song and dedicated volume buttons. I preferred using the new Nano in my car over my iPod Touch. But yeah the clickwheel is much better in car in general though.

Sure...AFTER the firmware was updated to 1.1...for many months when it first came out, you could not turn it off. This feature was not added until Spring of this year...well over 6 months after it was released.
That is ridiculous. First complain about a missing feature, then after it is fixed, complain that it took them too long.
There are things to not like about the nano that actually matter. This is not one of them.
Personally, both the 5th and 6th gen have things that do not matter to me since I use it exclusively as a player in my car in the glovebox attached to my head unit. I don't need the camera of the 5th gen and don't care that the 6th gen is smaller, but I can see why that matters to some.
As to Apple deliberately crippling the nano to force people to buy a touch - of course they do. Offering different products for different purposes is smart business. No overlap of the iPod line like there was before.

No need to be uncivil and call people names.
The biggest problem was the almost year people had to deal with poor battery life because you couldn't turn the thing off. Apple took WAY too long to fix that blatant screw up.
As of today tho, I like it.
I quoted you clearly making the complaint that I addressed. I never said you didn't buy one or like it. I merely pointed out that there was a problem that people didn't like, then it was fixed and people complained about the fix or that it took too long.
It's not personal. Lighten up Francis.

My only complaint is the clip. Given i'd mostly put it in a pocket rather than clip it onto a belt or anything, the clip pretty much doubles the thickness without providing any benefit. A removable clip would be ideal.

Hmm. I never knew about this issue, mine must have shipped with the 1.1 firmware out of the box.
I only bought it a couple weeks ago now from this date and bought it from Apple online. The more I use it the more I notice it's benefits despite some lost features from the previous generation.
I had a 4th generation 16GB nano which was showing it's age, Despite it's ability to play videos, the screen was so small, it hurt my eyes just to watch it, even my BlackBerry outclassed it in both size and resolution...
Both models can display photos but I didn't care using either for viewing or showing photos as they were the size of a postage stamp on both. Sure the 4th gen had a true 4x3 screen which was ideal for most pictures.
I mainly used my old Nano for listening on the road both audiobooks and music and perhaps the only thing is I can't have my Strongbad Trogdor video for laughs on the 6G but it's a small loss to me. The huge gain is half the size, same amount of memory so I didn't have to fiddle with my playlists (bought a 16GB of course) and the best part about it all is that it has yet to take a trip onto my tile floor thanks to the much hated clip.
When I don't feel like goofing off with my iPod Touch and just feel like listening to my audiobooks, Audible support is there for my older books I didn't buy from iTunes and a surprise feature I liked was the text to speech feature when using my iPhone 3GS headset with it.
Sure I do wish it had a camera like the 5th generation, as it seemed like a handy tool for quick clips for iMovie or Youtube but I was annoyed the 5th gen could not capture stills, only video.
Guess you can't please everyone.

I like the nano if I want to listen to my favorite songs but due to the capacity constraints the iPod Classic is still my favorite.
If it was 32GB, I'd love it as a primary player but 16GB just doesn't give me enough breathing room to add songs I haven't rated yet.
As far as the turning off thing goes mine ran fine with firmware 1.0 and its not a new concept that you couldn't turn an iPod off. The iPod Classic (+ previous generations) and all previous generations of the nano couldn't be turned off either.

It's grown on me. Initially I thought it was really slick looking and OOOOOOOOOOHHHH a touch screen. After using it for a lil bit, it' was very nice, very compact however the touchscreen doesn't work well with something that's so tiny. It took me a my pudgy fingers a while to get used to the new functionality of the nano and, in time, I got used to it. I neither love nor loathe this thing but I'm pretty content with it now. What I'd really LOVE to see is the 3rd gen nano with a touch screen. THAT, I'd buy in a heart beat.

I have stayed away from the new Nano because of the screen. I couldn't care less if it has a camera or not, I want something that is consistently easy to use.
I have a collection of Touch's, Nano's and even Shuffles. I do love the 'stick' shuffle with no controls on it because it's simple and I can ski with it and not be afraid of it freezing and/or losing battery life because it gets cold.
But I'm still not sold on the new Nano. I will keep my older square pre-rectangular/curved glass Nano as long as I can. The radio feature is a non-seller for me because I use the iPod BECAUSE of the radio stations around here. I'm not going to get a glorified 'Walkman' with a radio because I'd never use it.
BTW, I thought that the 6th Nano had a pedometer and Nike+ built in? No?

I like that nano because it and its earbuds together take up so little room in my purse as a solution to the "Damn, I forgot to bring my iPhone / iPod touch" problem. They're in a little quilted case smaller than an Altoids tin.
So I keep a few playlists of the month on there, maybe a couple albums purchased around the time I last sync'd it. It's just a fallback for me, but it has come in handy more than a few times. The clock is charming.
Sometimes I leave the nano in the kitchen's speakerdock for a couple days after I've charged it up again. I generally prefer to have old TV shows to watch while I wait for something or other to boil, so I usually have an iPod Classic docked in the kitchen for that purpose. But that tiny little square nano looks so cool sitting there belting out jazz or rock. It makes me smile even on rainy days. Mine is orange!

Yea, I like it, that's why I bought one.
I had a well used 2nd gen. nano that finally stopped working with my nike+ as well as the click wheel acting sporadic when trying to navigate around (did software restores, nothing helped).
I saw the 5th gen, but was attracted to the size/weight of the 6th as well as the clip already built in, which saves me from buying another case. It doesn't take too long to understand the UI, perhaps that's attributed to being iOS/Tech savvy… I'm an active runner and keep it out of sweat's way by clipping it to my waist near the back of my hip.
My only gripe is that Apple gipped us the proper headphones with the remote. I enjoy the Apple headphones for working out & running because I can still hear traffic and other noises without the discomfort, but the old remote-less headphones will only be used for backup.

We have a hand me down 6th gen ipod nano.
It has the latest 1.1 firmware update for the battery turn off feature.
When we press & hold the sleep button,
we get the rotating icon and the ipod nano 6th G powers off.... we think ?
When we press it again... after waiting several minutes,
to get past the quick power up timeout feature,
it displays the Apple logo screen and then boots to the main screen.
Our problem seems to be that the battery drains to dead,
EVEN with the ipod nano 6th G turning off (we think)
with the rotating icon from the 1.1 firmware update.
We can fully charge it - take it off the charger - full battery is displayed,
and then press/hold the sleep to get the rotating icon... to power off...
The next day, the battery is dead !!
Not sure what we should do....

I like the 6th generation
if you have small fingers,
if you don't want anything except music,
if you want fashion + small touch screen + easy to carry not like another Mobile Phone,
if for you 2GB is too small & iPod touch is too much money to spend on music & etc.
if you don't want camera (you have DSLR or something better than just 5MP Cam to click some good pics, I have Canon Mark II 5D).
if you don't want to play games on iPod,
if you don't want to carry your full music storage with you (just selected songs if you want to carry),
& some other reasons most people will find out
than you gonna love iPod NANO

I love my LunaTik as well. The form factor is amazing, as is the Pedometer and Nike+ integration.
I primarily use it as a watch, but I listen to it when I want to save my iPhone's battery, on longer trips, and tanning. As you said, it is amazing to have a file storage device on your wrist always. The lighted face is amazing at raves and I've gotten more compliments on the device then I can count.
I'm anxiously awaiting Scott Wilson's BlueTooth adaptor. That will be perfect.
I really think Apple is making a big play for the wrist and this was an exploration in form.
I really hope they keep this form factor in September and I'd love to see true BlueTooth integration within the device. That's my largest demand.
If they would implement a forward facing camera and FaceTime, I'd buy in on launch day.

I must admit that ever since I bought the iPhone 4 32GB last year, I haven't used my iPod. So sold my Nano 5 last year.
Now that I just restarted fitness and gym training 3 times a week, I got to admit the iPhone 4 is NOT the device to use there. It's too bulky, when I use the cross trainer - even having it in an arm band seems too bulky - and I sweat during my workout, which makes it kind if gross using the iPhone afterwards, so decided it was time to buy the new Nano 6.th generation with touch and built in clip.
Just got it - the 16 GB Nano Touch in golden orange with a set of White Sony earbuds. It looks so cool, clips to my shorts and weighs nothing.
24 hours batterytime means I can use it for 2-3 weeks before recharging it. Best buy for my needs !!
So if you want a small lightweight unit with great Design for your workout - there still is a great need for the IPod Nano Touch with the clips IMHO :)
Just saw a lady in the gym drop her iPod Touch - the screen got a crack.
I thought she really needed a Nano Touch. Even if you drop the Nano Touch, it's so lightweight that it will still hang on to the end of the earbud cable and not drop on the floor.
Best unit for workout Apple has ever made - the iPod Nano Touch !!!!

Seriously, I don't buy all these "iphone nano" mockups that just have iOS in a 3x3 grid or whatever. There's no way they would ask all the developers to make new apps for a screen size which is only a little bit smaller. I think it makes sense for them to make the iPod nano into a iPhone nano, and keep apps as the differentiator between the iphone nano and the iphone 4/5.
The thing which will solve the interface issue is the nuance text-to-speech, the Siri AI, and iCloud connectivity.

I don't own one, but after using a friend's a few times, using it at the store, seeing another friend with one being used as a watch, and my want/need of a good iPod with no distractions from my music, I am definitely wanting this. Plus the whole watch thing is amazing! I think I'll wait and see what the seventh generation is like though, because I'm hoping for a (slightly) larger screen and wifi sync. If that doesn't happen though I think I'll just buy a refurbished one. :)

I think it makes sense for them to make the iPod nano into a iPhone nano, and keep apps as the differentiator between the iphone nano and the iphone 4/5.
The thing which will solve the interface issue is the nuance text-to-speech, the Siri AI, and iCloud connectivity.
It would be awesome as your phone... but a little too small and not feasible due to battery life.
BUT it SHOULD be a bluetooth headset with extended features... like caller/picture ID. Use of a regular iPhone headset as the actual microphone and buttons. Access to your contacts to dial out and some other interactive features.

Having not purchased it or seen one outside a store, I'm mixed. I can see the use of it, but at the same time, most of its function, playing music, can be purchased for a third of the price (albeit less storage) in the form of Shuffle, and the Touch can be purchased for not much (comparatively) more with far more function. If I had $150 extra, maybe I'd get one. But, for now... no.

Short answer: I love mine.
Use it everyday when commuting to work. It gets filled with lots of podcasts and the supply never seems to run dry. Also use it about four times a week when running. It weighs about nothing and clips to my shorts or belt. What really makes me like it is the small size and weight and that it has a builtin clip.
The screen allows me to choose what podcast to listen to. The rest simply works.

I work out quite a bit and since they added a touch screen to the 6th Gen, I think it is perfect for playing music while on the go. Don't need bigger, don't want a camera, definately don't want a wheel. I need a light-weight music player, and for that it is perfect and can hold tons of songs. The clip is also perfect. The engineers made this THE best portable music player. Radio is nice feature too. I need reading glasses so have trouble reading screen but am not willing to give up the portability. Quit bitching ya'all. This is just what it is...not a small ipod touch!! I LOVE MY IPOD NANO 6th GEN!!!

anyone who doesn't like it needs to rethink what they want.
An Ipod nano is music, pure and simple. If they want all the other bits, get a touch. If you just want music, tell me what exactly there isn't to like?
People will always find something to complain about, even if a device is perfect for its purpose. Its human nature.
Sorry but, I disagree. I already have an iPhone, and I also have a 4th generation iPod Nano (the previous body style, but minus the camera) for just music purposes for when I want something small-ish/light for working out. If it were to die, I think I'd go on eBay or something to try getting another one before buying one of the current generation Nanos.
It's not about the fact that it doesn't do what the other iPod/iPhone models do, it's about the fact that it's too damn small. I don't understand Apple's (and other companies') obsession with smaller, smaller, smaller. You can only get it so small until it just becomes awkward to use, unless you have freakishly small hands. The previous generation was a good combination of functionality and size. The current one is not. To me, there's no real benefit to the additional reduction in size...it's just a means for them to say, "oh cool, look how small we can make these things."

I love my 6G Nano. Admittedly, I also own a 2G iPod touch so I occasionally go through periods where it isn't used much, but I still love it as a Music device.
However, I may need to give it up in my endeavors towards making an iPad my only PC once iOS 5 is released.....

I don't have any problem with it, but I don't have one either. I've only used one for a few minutes at an Apple store. I like my click wheel iPods, but I can see how using a nano when exercising would be good at least in terms of weight. My wife has a 4th Gen Nano that I'd use in the gym if it were a little more manly (it's pink) so I use my 80 gig classic. My first ever iPod was a 1st gen nano which I loved but the 4 gig capacity was just not enough. This is making me consider a 6th gen (or 7th gen when they're released). Ideally a 32gb model at the current 16gb price.

My cousin thought his 6th gen nano was broke so it was down to me to fix it (just needed to recover) but I was playing with it for a couple of days before he picked it up.
Don't like. Way too fiddly and a step back from my 5th gen Nano. Not sure what they were thinking, it's more like a Shuffle except not as cheap or disposable.

The 6th Gen nano was specifically designed for people who actually wanted a shuffle, but didn't realize they could get one for much less money.
For those of use that actually use the old 5G nano and understand its technology and capabilities, the 6G is a toy - a total joke in every way. The 6th gen is great for soccer moms (and the under 6 crowd) who ONLY listen to a few songs every now and then. Anyone tech-savy at all wouldn't be caught dead with a 6G.

I have first, a third, and fifth gen nanos, and the third gen "fat" nano is by far my favorite design. Not only does it have more personality, but it just fits nicely in the hand (whereas the fifth has some sharp corners).
As for the sixth gen, it really is the touchscreen that dooms it for me. I need to be able to both skip tracks and change volume without looking at the screen, and you can do both on an older nano without it ever leaving your pocket.

that's why there is a big push towards headphones that have built in support for voume/track changing. Im pretty sure they had this in mind when designing the 6th gen.

I hate how people are saying, "If you want video get an iPod Touch!" Because the whole reason people are mad is that the Nano could Previously, and cannot now. Yet it stayed at the same price range.

The 6th gen isn't a bad music player, its pricing should be cheaper though to make up for lack of video and camera. I mean honestly who uses the nano for video or its camera? fluff features in my opinion.

The 6g has one great use: a replacement to the iPod shuffle. It gives you the size of the shuffle, but with the option to choose your music. Don't think of it as a nano, but a shuffle with a screen.

I actually LOVE the new iPod Nano. I ditched my iPod Touch and got this. It's much better suited for cycling, running and other aerobic activities. I bought the watch strap and wrist strap accessories and both work out great. I also have an iPhone so really had no need for another larger touch screen (except my iPad 2, of course) device.
I was happy to get the radio and pedometer which I didn't have previously.

I disagree. Never been a huge fan of the click wheel... It feels old in this day of touch screen devices... Tha said though, the iPod Nano could do with one more button or implement a 3rd click feature on the power button, one for play/pause on top of fwd skip.

I honestly don't get the 'hate' for the ipod nano 6G/7G
From reading some forums on this site and others, I have boiled it down to a few reasons why people hate it, but I see these as nitpicks.
1) "They took out video playback from the 5th gen!"
- You really watched video on a screen..*that* small? This feature was almost put in "because we can". A screen that small I can't enjoy video on.
Apple took out the video playback because the event was titled "All about the music" Right? So the nano now is a music-player only, and video playback is a 'premium' feature and only available on the ipod touch.
2) "It's too small!"
- It's the perfect size just to play music, as that is the main focus of the nano. Plus, technological advancements would have made mp3 players this small anyways and most companies which produce mp3 players would have adopted a similar form factor. It's technological progress. Would you buy an mp3 player now that is as big as the original Creative player? Didn't think so.
3) "It's too hard to use!"
- I'm not a small guy and I don't have small fingers, I can use it just fine and I'm an incredibly adaptable person.
4) "It's useless as a watch because the clock isn't on full time, you have to wait for a whole 2 seconds and you have to charge it way more often then a regular watch"
- First point: Have you timed yourself when reaching into your pocket to fish out your smart phone and then turned on the screen? At minimum that's 10 seconds, 20 at the most..and the complaint about the nano as a watch is a whole 3 second want time?...uh huh..
-Second point about recharging often: you recharge your phone every night, right? or at least every second day. How is recharging your ipod every night or every second night any different? It's just one more device that takes a whole 10 seconds more. This is a problem...how??
I personally like the newer nano's because I have always imagined a watch-sized mp3 player since about 2001 (and I'm honestly surprised that none of the watch companies wanted to capitalize on this.)
As I said before, most of the 'problems' that I've read complaints on..seem very nikpicky-ish and its a 'complain to complain'..complaint.
If one wants an iPod nano with video playback, then you want an iPod touch. That is Apple's decision and I don't think any amount of complaining is going to change it.

Personally, there wasn't a single iPod that convinced me the iPod was it until the 1st Gen Nano. The 5th Gen sealed the deal for the legacy of that product. This new one should just be called the Nano Squared.

I don't like it. I find the screen to be too small (though I admit this is based on playing around with it in my local Apple Store rather than owning it) to use easily. I prefer the clickwheel for eyes-free use.
That said, I do like some of the watch strap options that are hitting the market, so would probably only consider getting it as a watch, with music etc a nice bonus. Right now, I use my first gen (!) that I got refurb'd about five years ago or so, and which I consider perfect for my needs.
I am one of a probably tiny minority whose fav nano was the so-called "fatboy".

I love the Nano. I have the 7th gen one and, to me, it's the perfect music player and the kind I've been looking for all these years. I understand how fans of the previous generations feel. If you had trained your muscle memory to work with the wheel, the touch screen would be a big change. However, since the only Apple products I've owned are the iPod Touch and the iPad, this seemed like a logical extension of those.
I've tried other small MP3 players in the past, and they were all felt fragile and junky. They also had clunky interfaces and they weren't the easiest things in the world to move music onto. I had been using my phones to carry music around in but as phones have gotten bigger that option has gotten less convenient, plus it does eat battery life.
I love that I can clip the Nano onto virtually any part of the clothes and it's completely unobtrusive. The only thing I'm worried about is that it's so small that one day I'm gonna lose it.
It's certainly not perfect. I wish it had Bluetooth so that I could eliminate the wires and, for what it does, it seems a tad overpriced. I'm sure Apple sells plenty of these things but if the 8GB version were $99 and marketed a bit more I don't think they could keep them on the shelves.

I don't understand how this makes any sense because it is the same as the iPhone, just a smaller screen. It's not like the icons are smaller or anything. You sound like one of the people who don't like something just because you can.

Preface this for most readers: I only bought the thing to use as a watch.
I just bought a 7th Gen 8GB Nano and black iWatchez band. That's the whole reason I purchased it. I liked the sleek, flat, "big face" look to it which is like most of my watches.
I dug the idea of being able to simply switch color bands for whatever I'm wearing and change faces at will (since they have the decent selection now).
So far... love it. I don't use it for any other purpose because I own an iPhone, but I do sync some music to it just in case I'm driving or on my phone and want to pipe music through to my car, but I wont use it often.
If I did use it for basic music, etc, I think it's a great little design for a portable MP3 player. It's small, compact, decent screen, doubles as a watch, etc. I just don't need those functions.
So it gets a thumbs up from me.

Just got the 6th gen today, sent in my pristine 1st gen Nano for the recall. I can't find much to like about the 6th gen.
So far
- Custom dock/line out to use with dedicated headphone amp (useful for higher impedance headphones) no longer functions. I'm getting no audio using the dock out.
- To small, I have big fingers, and navigation is really difficult.
- Clumsy UI, I find I'm scrolling more through menus to find things that where once a simple click of the wheel.
- Backlight will not shut off when charging the thing, UNLESS you eject the ipod from iTunes. Old models you could change the setting so the back light would go off.
- 3.5mm audio jack, seems a bit lower quality then the older models, to me at least.

all of your reasons plain suck/straight out false
a) what higher impedance headphones ? I can run my studio headphones fine from the ipod nano (which to be honest I tried once because it just looks ridiculous given the size of the nano)
b) UI is similar to the iPhone, takes a while to get used to it but it works ( would enjoy a smaller font )
c) The nano charges ridiculous fast. also how hard is it just to flip it over ?
d) The audio quality on the nano is equal if not better to prior iPod iterations. The volume at least seems louder to me than any previous iPod/iPhone I own

Apple just sent me a free 6th Gen iPod nano after I returned my 1st gen iPod Nano as part of the recent recall. As happy as I am with getting a serious courtesy upgrade, I am really disappointed that iCal and Address Book is not supported. I use iCal a lot, and syncing my laptop calendar with my old nano was really convenient. I am missing the iCal sync already. I wish I didn't participate in the recall now as I was quite happy with my 1st gen nano.
I can now only hope that Apple will reintroduce iCal and Address Book software for the 6th gen iPod nano.

I haven't seen this mentioned at all: a major reason I use the nano is for the radio. WHen I lost my 5th gen nano I got the new nano and find that the radio reception is very poor. I'm not sure why it would be any different than the 5th gen, but I use it in exactly the same places, like my sports club or walking the dog, and it's noticeably inferior. In fact it hardly works at all in the sports club and it gets intermittently static on the walk, whereas the old one was fine.
I also don't like the touch screen and the shorter battery life. As for the latter, it's not just a question of daily charging - sometimes I'm away from electricity for several days and always appreciated the long life of the click wheel version.

Apple will *never* give the Nano iCal or Address book syncing as the nano is strictly a music-player only.
If you want iCal/Address syncing, then the nano is not for you, the iPod touch is.

I just loved the 3rd and 4th gen designs. The 5th gen was a step too far, the screen was too big and the camera completely unnecessary.
The shame about the 6th gen iPod is it traded off easily held for easily clipped. It just seems like Apple reached their logical conclusion of small and functional, and can't see anywhere to go.
Personally, I think it could be an exercise in pure, interesting design. Create a new one every year and just let the industrial design team run free. It's a declining product, but one whose annual sales easily pay off production. Make it a speciality!

I am the exact same as this guy, I love it as a watch. I was gifted it because i wanted a watch and nothin more. I have an iPad and iPhone for my music and such!
I love it as a watch with my two Hex watch bands.
Same here. Though I bought it before i got my iPhone. But what sold me was having the greatest nerd-tastic watch since the calculator watch.

There should be an app store, web browser, email client.. inputs would work via handwriting.

They call that an iPod touch.

I liked the last gen better. Even if there was no camera, it had a bigger screen and the classic scroll wheel.

I second this..
People want the iPod nano to be basically a 'wrist computer', ie..having an app store, syncing, web browser, e-mail client..etc.
This is what the iPod touch/iPhone is for.
iPod Nano 6g/7g is a *music* player and the apps on it are related to music (the Nike add-on, for example). The only reason I'd want an 'app store' on the iPod nano 7g is to allow us to purchase more watch faces.
I don't get why people are disappointed in the iPod nano not being what it was never intended to be. It's like going to Wendy's and demanding a Big Mac and getting angry that they don't sell it.

I don't think that folks are disappointed. It's more along the lines that they can see so much potential in the nano and feel that Apple is holding it back.
If there were an app-store for the nano, you could bet that there would be many more accessories available. For instance, in the fitness arena, you're really stuck with Nike+. If an app-store was available, I'm sure you'd see all kinds of alternatives and accessories (i.e. GPS dongles, ANT+, etc).
People see the nano and it reminds them of a tiny iPhone/iPod touch. We've gotten used to all of the great and useful apps and then wonder why the nano isn't treated with an app-store to extend the usefulness.
NOTE - I do realize that the nano isn't using iOS. It's just that the system feels like iOS and the mind is trained to expect an iOS experience.

I don't mind so much that there is no speaker but at the very least a small vibrator motor so I can use the timers better. I love my 'iWatch' and is a conversation starter without me showing it off people start talking on it and it looks good. Hell, one of my friends has a bigger watch and has only 3 clocks and a date nothing more and looks so so.

I hope the next gen will have just more iPod Touch/iPhone extension features... like Bluetooth 4.0 features and the ability to use it as a bluetooth head set via your wired head set. It would be great to use it as a stand alone player AND an extension of my iOS device when I get a call/want to watch a video, etc.

A friend has loaded onto his nano watch photos of QR codes linking to his website etc for clients he meets. Sounds cool. Any more "hacks" out there?

I like my 6th gen Nano. A longer battery life would be nice.
