Safari Email Configuration

Email on my iMac is unpredictable. Sometimes it sends out email immediately, other times it freezes, giving me an error message about the server settings. I have to then close the program and reopen it for it to send the email. I use ATT Yahoo email and Gmail. What is the correct configuration/setup on Snow Leopard Safari mail program? I really appreciate any responses. Thank you.

Safari is a web browser. Mail is an e-mail client. Instructions for configuring GMail with Mail are readily available by searching Google. Yahoo mail cannot be accessed from a desktop client without the premium version of YMail.
