The price of the refurbished 1.8GHz iMac G5 models have each dropped by $50 to bring them to $1249 and $1599. Just a few weeks ago, the 20" model dropped $50 to bring it down to $1649 from $1699. The 1.6GHz iMac remains unchanged.
$1599 for a 20" iMac is a great deal considering a Mac mini and a 20" Cinema Display would run you $1498 or $1398 if you got the display refurbished.

What? We're not combining this with speculation on updates?
$1249 on the 17" model is pretty nice though.

NEW iMACS NEXT TUESDAY!!!!!!!111 :p
There we go. That's what I needed.
And, if the new iMacs are coming out, then new PowerMacs should follow shortly. Right? Right?

That's a bargain !
$1599 = ~£830
...equiv iMac new is £1299 (~$2500) here
Off to the US next Sunday, seriously tempted by a refurb but after getting the weight and dimensions of the box I'd struggle to get it back with me without major hassles plus I'd run the risk of having to pay taxes on my return. Power supply issue is easlily solved though.
Decisions decisions....
iMac update in the next month would be cool or my bonus will have been spent already :)

Oh no, they couldn't possibly update the iMacs before they update the PowerMacs. That just couldn't be done! Then they would be too close. Really, I too would love to see a thread that doesn't speculate as to the release of better versions of the unit being discussed. What do people in here really know about upcomming releases other than what has happened in the past? Let's talk about what IS for a change, not what WILL BE:)

Spending $1600 on an iMac now WILL BE a waste of cash if there IS a new iMac in the next few weeks though :D

I'd get the Mac mini and 20" LCD. The Apple Cinema display is of higher quality than the cheapo LCD screens they use on the iMacs.

They are hardly different...

IIRC they aren't different... not sure on that, but pretty sure the LCD panel is the same, maybe the wiring isn't exactly the same.
The iMacs have always had great screens, better than most LCDs out there (they MOVE! :D) and the Cinema Displays are also great.

The Apple Store is now listing refurbished 20" iMacs for $1599. Also, Amazon has been out of stock on the 20" model for a week at least (which suggests a product refresh of some kind, possibly giving credence to the 512mb RAM rumor). The other two models are $1,099 and $1,249.

The displays on the 17" iMac have much lower viewing angles than the 20". it's all in the tech notes. The 20" has the better display, and after seeing both of them side by side, I'm extremely glad I didn't get the 17".

The 20" iMac uses the exact same panel as the previous generation 20" cinema display which is hardly a "cheapo" LCD screen. The 17" iMac looks better than most other 17" LCD's.
Pros:
Better GPU
More VRAM
More RAM
Faster CPU
64-bit
7200RPM 3.5" SATA HDD
Less clutter
Iconic
Cons:
Cannot use the display with another computer
$300 more
Louder

I already have a G4, prefer to move up to a G5 with my next purchase. Since the LCD is basically the same, there is no real reason not to go with the 20" iMac. The only reason not to would be if the Mac mini is all that you could afford.

Better, faster and cheaper iMacs are right around the corner. apple allways does this just before a release. Wait and get a new machine with tiger plus its going to cost less or the same as those that are refurbished. my 2 cents as long time master Apple observer. :D
