Desktop broken?

I have a problem where I don't have any desktop picture at all and when I try and change it nothing happens. Also all the icons don't work so I have to go though finder to open up anything on the desktop. I tried restarting it but what other things should I try?

Try deleting the desktop preference and restarting.

YourUser>Library>Preferences>com.apple.desktop.plist

Although you may not even need to restart. As soon as you trash it (and maybe empty the trash) it should generate a new plist automatically.

Just an idea, by the way, but it won't hurt anything.
